I worked on Diesel engines while suffering in the US Navy. I've never lost my fascination with them. In my semi-qualified opinion, the Sabb 10 HP single cylinder engines were the best ever made. I sincerely consider it a crime that Sabb quit making them. If I ever get wealthy enough to start a manufacturing concern, I want to begin production of them again.

Threat Dynamics - I worked for a while at SABB MOTORFABRIKK which is located at Damsgård in Bergen hvere i live, and I have to agree with you. Those with 2 cylinders are great engines too, almost indestructible if they got good care.

I myself have had several Sabb diesels, from 8 to 30 horses, and have seen countless others. But this is the first time I see a red one, and it actually looks cool. Nice and clean and well-kept engine, testifies to a good and careful owner who takes care of his things. Treat your Sabb diesel well and it will last forever. good luck.

Love it. Where I once worked there was an industrial dump truck from the sixties I believe. I was equipped with single cylinder 7 HP diesel air cooled..3 speed gearbox.. mechanical brakes..and crank start. First time everytime this would be mine if I could ever find one again. So simple and reliable

Got to LOVE the starter & fuel mileage. Only Problem for my application would be speed. When I was Commercial Snapper Fishing Diving ECT. I needed to run 14 to 30+ miles out. Also need to be able to outrun Storms. I am not so able any longer But I would still love it for many applications.

0:15 Gotta love diesel engines. No spark plug. No starter motor. No electricity needed. Will probably run underwater as long as the air intake isn't drowned.

I think they will because in the manual there is a paragraph telling you to change the oil as soon as possible if engine has been submerged in water

Those engines are so damn cool ! Years ago i met a guy that motored a Sailboat down the Intracoastal Waterway in Florida and the boat had a Aircooled Deisel motor without a gear box he told me that when he needed to reverse at a bridge he would Stall the motor and spin the flywheel backwards to get it running then repeat the opposite when the coast was clear to go through the opened Draw bridge it wasn’t a Saab engine but some other European brand that was often used in lifeboats years ago according to him i have found a used Lifeboat thats for sale but it does have a transmission with a foward and reverse gear that i am hoping to purchase for a project boat as the vessel does run as is and i would like to add a Cabin onto the open Hull to make it a long distance cruiser a nice feature of the lifeboat hulls are they are Coast Guard rated for a lot of passenenger or weight due to their high floatation foam inside the hulls

I had a Bill Bolger designed boat with this engine and transmission in it. The power to weight and power to size ratios were horrible. Other than that the engine was golden. Started easily, ran smoothly, spooled up slowly but could have turned a wheel half again the diameter and pitch of the wheel I had. Plus, it was incredibly fuel efficient. Like Melody said, "didn't go fast but it went pretty far". For a boat or stationary application the engine was golden.

Can you show how it work, the transmission
@davidsinger83583 жыл бұрын
There is almost no transmission. The end of the drive shaft is connected to the first of three concentric cone sections. The middle one is connected to the propeller; the rear one is connected by a pair of gear wheels and a shaft to the front one, so it rotates the other way. To go forward, you move the entire prop shaft forward so the middle cone engages with the front cone and then the pressure from the prop keeps them together. Similarly, to go astearn you pull the prop shaft and middle cone so it engages with the rear one, which rotates the other way.

I bought a 27 foot deep keel sail boat ~ 3 meteoric tons about ~50 years old the owner had used it for forty years .It has this engine .I asked him he said at 6 knots flat out it used ~1/3 UK gallon per hour ( ~1.5 liter hour) . He also said they always ran the engine flat out .I haven't verified this number but have no reason to think it isn't correct ..So it looks to be 15 to 20 MPG or less in nautical miles .Its a pain to do oil change and spares can be hard to locate due to its age. Its reputedly very simple to fix most things even head gasket replacement .Hope that helps
@bradfordpalmer22985 жыл бұрын
6.9 miles ÷.396 US gal = 17.42 milrs per gallon at 6.9 miles per hour. Outstanding. Long trip across the ocean.

When the diesel engine era is over, what will run the world? Everything in the commercial world runs on diesel. If the petrol engine disappeared over night, the world would keep running. If the diesel engine disappeared, there would be nothing in the shops including food in a couple of days. Agriculture, construction, delivery vehicles, trucks, container ships, water pumps, generators, the military, all run on diesel. Run them all on the inefficient petrol engine, & world wide cost of all goods you can think of will go up 40% in days. Thank goodness for the fantastic efficient diesel engine!

Remember when petrol had Benzene added to it? The most carcinogenic substance known to man, for which there is no known minimum safe level. - Even 1 part Benzene to 10 million parts air is not safe. Even inhaling petrol vapour when filling up was regarded by scientists as hazardous. Petrol lawnmowers with no catalysts are particularly dangerous. Remember when petrol fuel had Lead (a brain & nervous system poison) added to it to lubricate valves? Even today, some 20 years after lead was removed from petrol fuel, people are still found with lead in their bodies because the body cannot eliminate it. No one seemed to have an ethical problem with petrol killing tens of millions of people a year through toxic emissions for 8 decades!
