Russia. Ever since the invasion began in 2022, this country has effectively been shut off to the Western world. Flights between Europe and Russia were halted. Trade was stopped. Most border crossings were closed.
And yet I found myself at one of the few crossings that remained open: Narva, in far eastern Estonia. I had never been to Russia, and as an American, now definitely wasn't the best time to change that. But no one knows what the future may hold. I was on a trip across Eurasia, and there was no way I could just ignore the world's largest country. I spent a month getting the visa, and worked on my Russian for half a year.
This is the first chapter of my journey across Russia to the Far East. I was beyond nervous. What did America's old Cold War foe have in store for me..
It turns out, the complete opposite of what I expected.

Absolutely. I visited numerous countries (incl China and Cuba) during Dubya's presidency and everyone was wonderfully nice to me on a personal level, but many shared their problems with US leaders. They explained, very clearly, the same notion you shared: there's a huge distinction between the people of a country and that country's leaders. People are friends, governments are not given the benefit of the doubt for obvious reasons.

A little remark abot the bridge is that its called 'Troitsky' not 'Trotsky', and got its name because of the 'Troitsky Sqare' which is connected to. And the 'Troitsky Sqare' got its name from the "Troitsky Cathredral" which used to be there, but was demolished by the bolsheviks in 1932. And the world ''Troitsky' translates as 'Three' or 'in the name of the Three' and it comes from the christianity the Three Holy Hierarchs - Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, John Chrysostom.

@@balbutie As a Chinese who lived in the UK for more than 15 years, I fully understand what you said and I also understand why the OP says "New York"--for the same reason you have mentioned. As you said it, you, and probably the the OP as well, have been living in your continent for more than 300 years and 300 years is long enough to develop rich history and culture of your own. Your father lives there. Your father's father lived there. North America is your home and your ancestors home. You are ORIGINALLY from North America. When some people asks you "where are you really from" it may have an implied meaning that you are "settlers", which really offends to many white Americans. Also, in today's western world, racial equality is so much advocated. In this discourse, asking for a person's ethnicity can sometimes be offending. Example, a colleague of mine, who is black, use to teach English in China and he said he was often asked by his students which country he is from, and when he answered UK/London the Chinese students were sometimes dissatisfied and asked "where are you really from" or "where are you originally from". I guess in most of Europe and North America, people wouldn't ask him "where are you originally from" after he said he is from the UK. And besides, when that Russian auntie asked the OP what ethnicity he is, she is actually expecting an answer like "Anglo-Saxon", "Dutch" or "Irish", which is rather impossible for a white American to provide an answer, because the European ancestry of many (if not most) Americans are so "mixed" that it’s difficult to trace it back to just one country. I quoted -New York ethnicity- here just for fun, not meaning that I think there is anything wrong with OP's answer of "New York".

Russia, the country of my family! Even tho im argentinian, my granfathers were from Russia and they were very hard working people. A lot of russians suffer the diaspora because we have a bad reputation in the west that portraits russian people as bad and as communist as well. Here in Argentina, because of the complicity between the local government and nazi Germany we had to endure a lot of discrimination, but we are already past that! Russia is a great great country and with very nice people. Enjoy your trip to the largest country on earth Sabbatical! Good luck!

Hey Tommy, thanks for doing this video. I'm 48 years old and have been taught to hate Russia all my life. I've also been taught to hate Putin. All i can say is that i was brainwashed. I woke up to that fact about 8 years ago. Russia is a lovely country with lovely ppl. Only one criticism and that's that i hope you start showing more interactions with the ppl of the country. Especially if you know the language. I've watched every video you've made and it seems that the earlier vids contained much more conversations. Anyways, always looking forward to your next vid. Be safe out there.

wow, i commented the exact same. i'm 52 from nyc and was raised like most of us in the 80s to hate russia. then in the late 90s and early 2000s, nyc started to have a lot of russians and ukraine areas pop up and they are amazing, wonderful, cultured people on both sides. meanwhile american cities are becoming more filthy dirty and 3rd world by the day. look at how beautiful moscow is compared to any american city. and our bullshit leaders want us to die in a war with russia? no fucking way

Mr. Bald chose to pick a side in the ongoing situation. Tommy is smarter than that. As an outsider it's best to be neutral. Also he "broke into" an closed off facility to see that space shuttle" and posted the endeavor on YT. Guess that didn't help his case.

Russia was a great country to visit & live in for a while. Overall a lovely people. Just like America, a crap government. When I was there of course, in Moscow, one could get Roubles, Euros and Dollars from the ATMs. In the Provinces I lives with my friends in their towns. Beautiful place. I could not see the tomb of Lenin because, my friend told me, "his nose fell off." Red Square and the Cathedrals in the Kremlin are spectacular. My friends are Tatars, and they would not let me visit St Basil's. In Moscow, if you refer to being in Russia, EVERYONE will tell you "Moscow is not Russia."
