Those South West Africa (now Namibia) broadcasts do look very poor compared to South African broadcasts but it would be like expecting RTE in Ireland to produce programmes at the same level as the BBC in the UK. The difference in funding and expetise must be vast.

+Scott Hood They don't look that bad compared to what I saw on ZBC in Zimbabwe in 1994 - the graphics looked like paper cut-outs! At the time SWABC would have got technical help and programming from the SABC, which it was part of until 1979 -TV didn't arrive until 1981.

Zimbabwe (as Southern Rhodesia) was the first country in the region to get TV, in 1960, but didn't change to colour until 1984.

@@kmfw72 Actually there was a gradual evolution to colour in Zimbabwe from 1980 with more modern telecine and VTRs transmitting colour.

The SWABC/SWAUK presentation looks hideous - Namibia didn't get TV until 1981 but the presentation looks like sometihg out of the early 1970s.

garry simpson There are now 11 official languages, but they don't have a TV channel for each one (only a radio station) - TV airtime is divided between them over three channels. The National Party government was opposed to the introduction of TV for ideological reasons, seeing it as a threat to Afrikaans language and culture en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_in_South_Africa#History It was only in the early 1970s

kmfw72 Thank You.knifw72. Is SABC as biased towards the ANC as it was with the National Party before the end of apitihied? Also how is the SABC funded? Like a Licence Fee here in the UK? or goverment funded? Also could you give me some information on Satellite and Cable TV in South Aficia and who owns it. Rupert Murdoch,General Electric or someone else. Disabled UK Carrer. GOD BLESS!
@kmfw72
@kmfw72 9 жыл бұрын
garry simpson Yes, the SABC is indeed accused of being an ANC government mouthpiece. It's mainly funded by advertising, although there is still a licence fee. There's no cable TV - pay TV is either satellite or terrestrial, the main provider being DStv (satellite) or MNet both from Multichoice, which is owned by local companies. It carries channels like BBC Entertainment and ITV Choice. During apartheid there was no British TV programming as there was a boycott by the actors union Equity.
