One of the most disappointing things about the new South Africa is the deterioration of the country's urban cores. The Johannesburg CBD used to be a safe place where you did not have to worry about becoming the victim of violence, black or white. It is disappointing that the new South Africa cannot value its old urban cores. Sandton's architecture and layout pales in comparison to the old Johannesburg CBD.

I was living in Pretoria in 1984 I was 15 and was in Pretoria Boys High. Lovely time and lovely micro city. I live in the U.K. now still miss SA at times.

Loved the old images of Pretoria, I lived in Arcadia in 1984, riding every day on the road below the Union Buildings to get to work. Was quicker than stopping at all the robots on Pretorius street or Church street. Thanks for sharing.

I grew up in South Africa and my dad worked for the gold and coal mining industry until he retired in 1972. He was the compound/hostel manager for many years and spoke both Xhosa and Zulu fluently. We lived in Randfontein and Witbank and I trained as a general nurse and midwife in Pretoria in the 1960s. Walked many kms around the Union Blds and Church Square! Often did train trips betw Pretoria and Jhb and Witbank so this video brings back loads of memories! Moved to Sweden in 1986 and last visited SA in 1995! Pretoria had changed but I still got around on foot and by bus and never felt afraid! ☆♡☆

Daar was ook die jaarlikse treinrit van Kaapstad tot in die Belgiese Kongo, en ook vele oornag ritte tussen Johannesburg en Durban. Regarding the context of the time, well... the government failed (very) to insist on an unsustainable ''separation'' model, especially after the fall of the gold standard and the revolts in neighboring countries after Portugal left, not to mention the fall of Rhodesia in 1980. Defense spending was exploding and the South African state's ability to finance itself was collapsing, and Western boycotts only made the situation worse. The national party should have carried out an electoral reform before 1983 and more comprehensively, it is a fact, even recognizing that there was an action by them in that decade to improve. Tokelo, that is still part of Western Cape, possible close to Worcester. This trip was from Cape Town. I've done this trip from Jhb to Cape Town numerous times by train. Great experience. Last trip was Apr 2018

@Armo Moose No they did not need a pass in 1984, it was abolished way back in 1976. 4 million blacks worked with 1 million whites in Johannesburg everyday. I walked the inner city streets of Joburg at midnight with my teenage sister. There was blacks but in general there was nothing for them to do there. We got along just fine with all races.
