Ricky's life was and remains a gift. A couple of things I'd like to commend: 1) The family for sharing their honest reflections and perspectives. The pain is deep and is evident but they continue to honour him. 2) The love that remains with the family and his people despite the grief 3) SABC for checking in, in a gentle manner. On that, Iman, for being a listening and compassionate interviewer who was able to balance emotions, allowed the voices of the family to come through I'm still in awe at how Ricky created a culture that outlives him. He served with heart.

As someone who has been feeling depressed for the longest time of my life and who, at some point, attempted suicide, I really know and understand what Ricky was going through. Sometimes you feel like you can just go to sleep and never wake up the next day. Depression is a very dark dense cloud that you have to deal with only by yourself because the person next to you never understands it. I started off university carrying this heavy load on my back and I'm finishing this year still struggling with this disease. Everyday I'm just praying it never gets worse because there is no hope for cure. Love and light to everyone dealing with it...

It hit me by surprise after I recovered from covid in 2020, I had no idea why I was feeling so low months after I recovered, until I had one of my Professors say in a random conversation that one of the lingering effects after covid is depression then I started dealing with it because I was so confused. It truly is one of the darkest things ever. I pray for everyone going through it to find some sort of coping mechanism.

The proof is in Allah's saying: “It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allaah’s forgiveness for the Mushrikoon, even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the Fire (because they died in a state of disbelief)” [al-Tawbah 9:113] So it is haram to ask forgiveness for someone who died as a non-Muslim.

Families they tend to blame themselves. 1 Your brother was feeling this feelings that he can’t explain to himself even harder to explain to someone. This feeling are mixed scary sometimes. The only thing you can do if you noticed . It to be there to support and encourage one to open up listen without judgment. And possible seek professional help.
