Section 235 of the South African Constitution acknowledges the right of cultural groups to self-determination. But what about the Afrikaner enclave of Orania which also uses race to determine who can be allowed to live in that community? Thirty-two years after its establishment, the Orania experiment continues to baffle South Africans and the world about why it is allowed to exist in stark contrast to the spirit of the Constitution which frowns against racism.

If a town of 3000 people, which you probably can't even find on a map, is giving you sleepless nights, you don't have any real problems or struggles. I can't imagine a more comfortable, luxurious, privileged life than one where one of your biggest worries is the fact that Orania exists.

I cannot for the life of me, understand why Orania bothers black people. Are they jealous because that Afrikaner group can, with their own hard work, build a place for themselves that works in all aspects? They have their own schools, libraries, infrastructure and water and sanitation that work because they are not waiting for the useless government to do it for them. I, myself as a white person in SA do not qualify to live in Orania but I respect their ethics and integrity to build their own community and live and protect their own culture.

@@nedor64 Orania is not established as a cultural city. As long as the Afrikaner people see themselves as separate we will never have genuine peace. We will always live in a US vs them . I am against the changing of certain historical place names for example because we are removing parts of our collective history. It's on private land and there are certain requirements to live there relating to belief, language, etc. Labour is all done by people living there. People who where never given the chance to take part in business/economic structures and other stuff because of skin colour? I believe we can both agree that the oppressed had a small chance of being in the same economic positioning as their oppressor's. Blacks started at a disadvantage of not having the education from what was considered best schools, little experience in the business field not because they were inadequate but simply because they were born in a different skin and would not be allowed to compete fairly with their white counterparts. This is part of our history, known fact. If you're a fair and just individual how would you help this group of people to attain what was previously unfairly kept from them.

The comments have been overwhelmingly positive to this interview, I think that's it's an indication that South Africans have come to realize that the concept of a rainbow nation is not really the way to go. Tribes across South America were not forced into one big melting pot and exist today in small groups retaining their individual cultures, beliefs, and ways of life. This does not however make them racists. People should be allowed to choose with who they associate and how to live their lives. It does not mean that they cannot help other groups of people achieve the same as in the case of orania who are very much involved in other Community developments around them. ❤

I’m amazed that the culture of the majority of South Africans is one of feeling threatened by a meager 2500 people who get off their rear ends and do things for themselves and are successful at what they do . This poses the question of why , if they are so worried about what the Afrikaner is achieving for themselves, do they not remover their index finger out of their rear end and do something similar for their own communities . I suspect it has to do with the culture of entitlement and it is easier to “hijack “ what somebody else has built. What is more obvious is the lack of ability to achieve anything for themselves.

If a previous group is disadvantage, money should go to advancing their education, facilities etc to uplift them to the same level. Handing out jobs, tenders simply on the basis of skin colour does not benefit anybody. Isn't it so typical that when the intertviewer talks about pre '94 South Africa, he uses general political buzz words like " the evil of Apartheid" but when he asks his guest about what he sees as a problem in the new administration, like the laws that exclude whites and race groups other than black, he asks for the specific numbered laws/acts. The post '94 government was worse than the pre '94 government in that there are more laws regarding race than before. And before, the laws related to public amenities and residential areas, which do not impact a persons life as much as blocking them from access to gainful employment, and feeding themselves and their families. What is misleading here is that Orania is seen as a race thing, where it is actually a culture thing. And certainly there will never be intercultural peace between any human groups and communities, until all humans are of One Spirit and of like Mind. So in the meantime, let's have cultural towns and regions for each and every culture, religion, medical and scientific modalities, tribal history and as many other concepts one can think of that causes us as humans to disagree with each other. Or hey, why not accept each other with tolerance and rerspect and have laws that include all citizens, with zero discrimination. Better yet, let's all live by the Law above all laws - the Bible.

It will more difficult to sort out those "bigger issues " when we're not united, perhaps that's one of the reasons we have those issues. South Africa has one of the most progressive Constitution's in the world and gives freedom of association and Section 235 allows the right of self-determination of any community sharing a common cultural and language heritage.

A missed question: If Orania must not or should not exist - should we not allow other indigenous communities or groups to exist with their own rules and cultural space within the broader context of South Africa? These small-town developments should be encouraged! Imagine a khoisan, bantu, xhosa, zulu dedicated town. Each group will have a sense of individual belonging not to mention the tourism benefits of encouraging all of this.

Let's look at facts. After 1994 all the black homelands still exist, with their kings where whites cannot buy land. These are vast areas. In other words the black tribes are aloud to have their homelands and whites not! Orania is not even a homeland but a town. In South-Africa Afrikaners are being discriminated against when ot comes to work. BEE is being enforced. Also no state entity wants to speak Afrikaans and Afrikaans schools are being forced to accommodate English learners. So this video is about jealousy-hate against Afrikaners. It becomes wrong when that seperation is forced by the government. Likewise if the government force people to integrate and assimilate to cultures and values other than their own, it is equally wrong. We are not living in a non-racial SA. In fact we are living in one of the most racist countries in the world where citizens of our country are regulated by racial quotas as to obtaining work or promotion. No other country in the world denies a person the ability to work and feed their family based only on the colour of their skin colour and ethnicity. All countries have enclaves where people in that country can protect their cultural heritage eg Amish in USA etc. in our country we have Zulu villages, Xhosa villages, Ndebele villages etc which protect their cultural heritage. This is no different to Be Tania just another culture and past history. Why are they not being questioned to please explain their rights to do so ! We have to start developing a country that tolerates and accepts that others different to us may live the way they wish to live and not the way others think that they should live. As long as people do not harm others and live peacefully and in a law abiding way they should not be interfered with or treated in this disgraceful manner !

The Zulus were defeated only 150 years ago and even then , they retained a level of independence. To this day they still control 1/3 of KZN. What have they done with that land ? The Xhosa are similar. They became independent long before the rest of SA. What did they do with their land ?

I am always mesmerised with the SA's lack of common identity "South African". The citizens all tell me their racial/tribal identity every day. Coming from overseas where racism is unsolved historical and social issue, rather humanistic, to be truthful, it's absurd to stress one's colour of skin, when everyone needs to fight against the common enemy, inegality and perpetual corruption. Unite to combat the corruption of all the level of the society.

I agree with you 💯. The problem we have in this country is that we so focused on our differences. Then there is the inferiority and superiority complexes that pervade our every day lives. The guy in the video was asked if he denounces the apartheid regime all he could do was try to evade the question. The policy that I am excluded because of something I am unable to change is absurd.

I don't think so. Orania is doing great without government. But for me as a proud black African human race. I think the problem is allowing Afrikaners only. I personally do not want to be associated with a human race that do not want to mix with me, because I am a black African race. So Orania for me is not an ideal place to look up to.

This situation scares me. i feel that the government is allowing this to happen on purpose, waiting for the town to get bigger and develop more and as soon as this town reaches a considerable size, the south african government will come with the army, and take it over one day. in my opinion, there's a reason why the south african government has allowed this segregation town to exist, they are just biding their time it seems.

Pure jealousy. Orania is a tiny dot on the map in an era which has seen South Africans marginalised and thrown out of power. Many have left the country altogether. A few determined Afrikaners have clubbed together to form a community in Orania in an attempt to hold on to some semblance of the kind of society they so successfully built. Black South Africans are in no way impacted by this; the seething resentment in the eyes and voice of the interviewer in this film speaks volumes for the impotent rage and envy blacks feel towards white people's achievements. South Africa is falling apart in the post-apartheid era: keeping the goodwill of white South Africans would probably be very wise.

Orania is planning to become an independent state but still vote in South Africa and pay no tax. They're building their own military. So they can cause an Israel Palestine situation for future descendants in about 100 years. Are we leaving our descendants in worse conditions then our colonized ancestors left us in? What do you have to say about them joining with Cape Independence. Must the KZN get independence too. We might as well all become independent at this point? What is your take on the DA & FF supporting this movement? Can Africans do the same in Europe? Or does being native to the Africa have no meaning $ rights any more? Freedom of association means freedom to associate, as well as freedom not to associate; it's not forced integration. The ANC is perpetuating racial victimisation, rather than removing racial bias. In my view, Hendrik Verwoerd's plan of separate development was certainly implemented badly, because it largely continued the subjugation and, in spite of huge expenditure, failed to support adequately the envisaged parallel separate development, which Carel Boshoff described as vertical division.

No one rants and raves about Munsieville where empoverished white Afrikaans speaking South Africans are living but everyone is crying about ORANIA. The reason: The people of Orania is msking a success of their town, they don't ask anyone for anything and THAT grates the jealous and envious hearts of the HATERS!!!! 32 Years ago these same people did not have a problem as the people of Orania were still stuggling to find their place in the sun. NOW however it's a different story, the people of Orania sprung into action, rolled up their sleeves and started developing the place to such an extent that it has become a flourishing little city. THIS JEALOUSY IS AGAINST THE AFRIKANER AS SUCH!!! It does not matter where the Afrikaner move to within South Africa, they will be hated because they are successful, white, blessed and prefer to be by themselves in order to preserve their own culture, heritage, language, morals and ideals.
