Jack Steiner was the designer of the 727 and 737 in the 1960s. He passed away in 2003. He was on the final flight of the 747-129C OO-SGA. "SGA" was the world's last 747 with an upper deck lounge and SN's first 747. Scrapped in 1993.

Sabena's 747 lounge still survived into the 90s? Considering other airlines ditched their lounges in the 70s & 80s, this is quite surprising. Anyways, amazed to see how far we have come in terms of passenger comfort in 20 years. First Class in 1993 won't be even considered Business Class in 2014!

If you mean that those sleeping-seats in Business class is any progress..Catering quality has fallen, Sabena had excellent catering, not teh supermarket shit that is produced by ghastly LSG & GATE GOURME as these two has taken over most carriers own catering operations.

I have SABENA old cabin with upper deck lounge any day over the mongolid cubicles and all that 100 of inflight channels filled with to much to see/hear or enjoy..catering today is lousy..SABENA had excellent catering because they made the food themselves..

Well Sabena didn't make money and went bankrupt eventually so it isn't surprising. Other airlines realized they had to move on and ditched the lounges earlier on

Oh I remember when I was a flight attendant for Pan Am in the 80s and we used to serve the best food on the 747 an 747sp on our overseas flights what a memory

OMG. They have a damn chef! Even today's top tier airlines like Qatar and Singapore give you re-nooked food. This was the end of the golden era of aviation. Luxury service.

Not sure about Qatar or Singapore airlines. But Emirates, ETIHAD, and even Garuda Indonesia are bringing back the on-board chef now.

Ils ont tué notre fleuron aéronautique, la Sabena était classée parmis les compagnies aériènnes les plus sûres et ayant la meilleure maintenance appareils. J'ai volé avec cette magnifique compagnie en 1993 pour un vol Bruxelles - Milan sur un A320, en 1995 et en 1997 sur DC-10 pour des vols Bruxelles-Kigali, en 1998 j'ai volé sur 747-400 sur un vol Bruxelles-Boston et j'ai aussi utilisé un 737-200 de la Sabena pour faire une dernière escale Paris-Bruxelles en 1999. Je me souviens encore des sièges bleus avec un petit tissus blanc avec un soleil comme appuie tête et des hôtesses très classes et vraiment sympa. J'ai même eu la chance de faire un atterissage dans le cockpit sur un siège juste derrière le pilote en 1995 sur Dc-10 sur un vol Kigali-Bruxelles (je venais d'avoir 12 ans) . Il m'avait déjà pris en vol pour me montrer le cockpit et il l'avait expliqué comment fonctionnait le pilote automatique et m'avait fais m'assoir à sa place en plein vol , il m'avait dit de poser légèrement mes mains sur les commandes et de suivre le mouvement, ça m'avait donné l'impression de piloter moi même alors que c'était le pilote automatique qui faisait tourner le manche , eh oui ça se faisait à l'époque, impensable de nos jours ça....

Over heel het bestaan van SABENA heeft deze geen enkele keer winst gemaakt (70 jaar) Toch heb ik er graag gewerkt en verschillende keren met deze mastodont meegevlogen! Om terug te komen op zondagavond zat de eerste Jumbo nog niet halfvol...en de tweede een paar uur later leeg,daar hebben wij leuke feestjes gebouwd!! een tevreden sabenien.

er waren enkele jaren dat er winst werd gemaakt, doch dat waren er denk ik maar een stuk of 5. Natuurlijk, als elk jaar het verlies netjes wordt bijgepast door de overheid, dan krijg je niet direct een organisatie die zich gaat richten op efficiëntie en dies meer. Tegen het moment dat men doorhad dat het zo niet echt meer kon lag Sabena al niet meer op de intensieve zorgen, maar al op de palliatieve afdeling. Hoe jammer het ook is
