When you asked why they got back to shooting each other, many soldiers actually refused to shoot at the guys on the other side after this or aimed deliberately high, so they wouldn't hit anyone. Of course, the higher ups didn't like that at all and most units were rotated to other areas, so they wouldn't face the guys they had learned to know. In 1915, anything similar was strictly forbidden under threat of court martial. In addition, artillery barrages were ordered during Christmas, so no-one could leave their trench. Edit: I have seen this video perhaps a hundred time now, and there was not a single instance where I didn't have tears in my eyes.

Its very sad, the officers who opposed the truce were never in the trenches to see the horror, or feel the peace in its true form. They had one goal in mind, to win the war. But the true meaning of winning to the poor soldiers in the trenches was to get home, to their family. The officers and generals didn't care about the poor men fighting the war they never understood, for a cause they never knew. Its sad that many poor lives are thrown away by people who never cared for them.

What's even sadder is that some of the French Generals had some of their French soldiers, who participated in the 1914 Christmas Truce, executed by firing squad as an example for disobeying orders.
@GetDougDimmadomed
@GetDougDimmadomed Жыл бұрын
@@TheScienceNerd100 The officers have orders. Grunts can generally get away with a lot, but something like this would have had major consequences for the officers and others of high rank. Officers are responsible for the actions of those they oversee. Back then, while family standing DID get you a higher rank, there were plenty that sloughed through conflicts to gain promotions. Many, many officers say hell, considering how often major wars happened back then. More often than not, officers, generals and majors cared about their soldiers like they were their sons. Those up top, the brigadier generals and commanders often viewed soldiers as expendable. The highest ranked leaders are the evil ones who decided to have men slaughtered for nought, not the officers. The highest ups fought for profit, not the officers. Officer isn't even a high rank. All it means is that a fresh recruit was promoted a few times. Same as it is today. Senators, generals, congress and the presidency don't care about their soldiers or their civilians, they care about their wallet. Nobody wanted the war, and everyone wanted it to end. This is the reason for chemical weapons and other WMDs. The longer the war, the more boys lost.

Finally found the quote I was looking for: "War brings out the worst and the best in people. Wars do not make men great, but they do bring out the greatness in good men. War is romantic only to those who are far away from the sounds and turmoil of battle. For those of us who served in Easy Company, and for those who served their country in other theaters, we came back as better men and women as a result of being in combat, and most would do it again if called upon. But each of us hoped that if we had learned anything from the experience it is that war is unreal, and we earnestly hoped that it would never happen again.” -- Dick Winters

A soldier's truce, one done by men sitting in the frozen mud and snow covered trenches surrounded by their dead comrades and longing to be home for the Holidays. The courage this took should not be ever underestimated, as a vet the hardest thing to hold onto is your humanity, here these men rose above the insanity even for a short time. The Generals made sure this never happened again and sadly most of the men who took part in this never survived the War that went on for another 4 years. A Christmas song but also one of Remembrance for all those lost in any War, and for those left behind with only their memories at Holiday time. Floor singing at the end was the Angle carrying the fallen from the battlefield home to their rest. There is not one part of this that is not a complete masterpiece. Lest We Forget but also a call to remember what these men did and demonstrated what humanity can accomplish when they put aside their differences. Wonderful video, great reaction and even better masterful work from Sabaton, the best History teachers anyone can ever have!!

It reads: 1914, The Khaki Chums, Christmas Truce 1999 85 Years Lest We Forget (taken from another user that I have forgotten the name of). Another reactor (TanktheTech) mentioned that there were 93 people to make this Music Video. Without a doubt this is definitely a masterpiece. My German grandfather fought in world war I and he spoke about this on one of our visits with him on Christmas. Also that year 1914 was one of the coldest winters in over 50 years. He spoke about it and he fought in Belgium and in Russia. The guitar that you see being played in this video is a 1914 Martin. Thanks Henning !! I also thought this song/movie needed to appear here but didn't suggest because Sabina might already have tons of requests. Was about the most impressive song in a time that - to me - reveals that even in most tragic and horrifying times a rest of humanity remains and Christmas in this case gave it an oportunity to rise. Music is just great and so fitting to the story. Reminder of 'Carol Of The Bells' got me emotionally as several other parts (e.g. lest we forget) of the song. Joakims voice is awesome as Floor's at the end. Yes, don't skip the credits ! It's a bitter reminder of our history but with a shimmer of hope. Up to us to learn, understand and do better. At least we do have the chance. Stay well !

The story of the Christmas Truce of 1914 is beautiful, heartwarming, but also tragically bittersweet and heartbreaking. Making friends with the enemy makes them much harder to kill when the battle resumes, because you’re no longer shooting at faceless, nameless enemies. You’re shooting at people you have met, spoken, shared food, buried the dead, and played games with. You know each other now, at least a little. You may have even shown each other pictures of the family waiting for you back home, and it is very likely that either one of you or both of you will never see them again. Under any other circumstances, you could have been good friends, but instead you have to kill each other, because that is your duty, and it is also theirs. The kindest thing you can do for them now is to try your best to make their deaths as painless as possible, and hope they do the same.

Sabaton is my favorite band right up there with Nightwish for this old Metal/head. Sabaton is not political but sings of the heroics and sacrifices of soldiers, civilians and in general their mantra is “ Lest We Forget”. Please check out the animated version of No Bullets Fly and please go to the end of the video you will see Sabaton’s Lest We Forget and really how powerful they are to people who should not forget about all the sacrifices of all our ancestors. Christmas Truce is now going to be played over every Christmas Holiday because in conveys the true meaning & spirit of the good in the human heart! Yes, the old Metal/ head biker dude cries every time I hear this and other Sabaton songs. They are not meaningless riffs or catchy lyrics, but have real emotions good and bad of being human! Sabaton UT history channel explains the stories behind the songs. Their animated versions are a combination of Sabaton History & their songs. Everything they do is incredible and unforgettable! The first time I heard of the Christmas truce was in Paul McCartneys "Pipes of peace" from 1983. The "riff" is Carrol of the bells upside down, or backwards. Carrol of the bells start at the 5th and moves to the tonic, Joakims "riff" goes from the base to the 5th. But it's still recognizable. Next should be "En livstid i krig" live in Gothenburg. Being Dane I don't know how good your Swedish is, but there's English subs. Gott nytt år Sabina.

A little note that I know most reactors worry about, as long as you use the official videos from Sabaton, Sabaton History of Yarnhub you will not get copywrite strikes. The band believes that a lot of the fans, including myself, come from first seeing a reaction or a cover of their songs and so their agents are very good about not flagging videos. When the original lead singer quit unexpectedly, predates myself so I don't know the specifics, J was asked to take the mic "temporarily, until we can find a better lead singer"... Sabaton is a Swedish band that writes and sings about Actual historic events, battles, moments of heroism and wars. They will be releasing their 10th studio album on March 4th 2022. Nice thing about them is that their video's never blocked so it's KZbin safe. What a great 50th birthday present! One of my favorite reactors reacting to one of my favorite bands! Sabina, your next Sabaton song should be No Bullets Fly. It is about Franz Stigler a German pilot in the Luftwaffe. On December 20th, 1943, he went up in the air to shoot down an enemy Bomber but he saw how badly it was damaged and he just couldn't shoot them down. He then escorted the bomber to safety past the Atlantic Wall anti aircraft guns and saved their lives! Make sure it is the official story video, you will not be disappointed and there is a surprise at the end! BTW, you will need some Tempo tissues for this one too!

I also found this song very emotional. It brought back memories of when I was working in a Pub in the 1980s. There was a regular who was a Veteran of the War and I remember the stories he would tell about it. He wasn't there for the truce, but joined up in 1915 (if I remember correctly). It was portrayed as a glamorous and heroic thing to do to fight for your Country and so he lied about his age to enlist. He then talked about the shock of the reality of it when he got there. He was wounded on the Somme and still carried some shrapnel with him. The positive side to his story was that, whilst he was recovering, he met his Wife who was a nurse at the Hospital. She was still with him that many years later and used to accompany him to the Pub on occasions.

Loved the reaction, i allways tear up listening to this song to! And Welcome to Sabaton rabbit hole, they have been around since 1999 and have over 100+ songs. 95% of them is about real war historys! Also they have been pretty big passed 10 years, think there biggest show was Woodstock 2012, 750.000 audience, been lucky to see them 4 times.

I listen to and watched this for the first time about a week ago and got very emotional. EVERYTIME I put this on it makes me emotional. This is the most powerful song emotionally I have ever heard and who would have thought that from a heavy metal band ! No wonder, Sabina, it got you as well. I agree his voice is amazing. I only heard this coming from listening to Floor in Nightwish. Top class music and I am usually not a fan of heavy metal. FANTASTIC production. Well done Sabaton 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

if this was your first time listening to sabaton, welcome to another rabbit hole. almost all their songs have to do with historical battles and wars, but always with the emphasis on the story behind the battle. they also have a second channel where they go deeper into the historical element of the songs called sabaton history.

I visited the site of the Christmas Truce, playing this song and being at the site at the same time, no matter how brave you think you are, breaking down into tears is only a matter of when. doing a Western Front tour with an Australian company, it was not only a beautiful part of the world, but also such a surreal experience, a beautiful part of the world, that saw so much suffering and death, and for humanity to shine through for such a fleeting moment, it reminds us, we are all brothers and sisters in this world.

One of your best postings and reactions to date. Paul McCartney recorded the Pipes of Peace following a similar theme I think in the 80’s. This offering however is powerful and beautifully made, and can’t help but leave an impression. Highlighting the horrors and futility of WW1 can be seen on many videos. But to combine that with a great song that delivers a message is for me a winning combination. Thought provoking, heart breaking…there are many emotions to be felt. This is the route reaction channels should follow with their presentation and style. Another winner Sabina, and for me, your best to date.

I love this song and video. I also enjoy Sabaton as a band, they make such great songs and videos. The lyrics, melodies and riffs blended so beautifully together. And of course the video helps paint a visual for the song. So well done. As an American Army veteran, combat is never easy, being away from family and loved ones is never easy. The things that have been seen and done, can never be unseen or undone, but you learn to live with it. Listening to certain songs from certain bands and watching the videos to those certain songs, this one included, always brings me to tears, while having surging of memories come flooding back. Very powerful. Anyways Sabina, great video. I love your take on this wonderful song and video.

Great reaction! If you want to dig deeper in to Sabaton, I would recommend "En livstid i krig", live from Gothenburg. Also a very emotional piece and slower in pace. But they have a lot of songs that are heavier, faster and more metal in sound as well.

The soldiers of the Christmas truce found out, that they actually had more in common with the poor bastard in the other trench, than with their own generals! In the Christmas of 1915, the generals couldn't have that! So there was no repeat of the 1914 Christmas truce on this large scale, as the artillery kept firing ... Some DID come out of their trenches, but was mostly instantly killed by the enemy soldiers. No moment of peace in a war that'll never end ... Until 11 o'clock, 11th of November, 1918 ... War to end all wars, indeed ...

That cross still stands at the exact place it was erected in 1914 at the side of a nowadays field, not the original anymore, but a replica. The location is in the middle of what used to be the no man's land during the first battle of Ypres, it is located near Commines-Warneton (Belgium) not far from the French border, not one day passes without fresh flowers, or even footballs being placed at the base of the cross, remembrance counts! Lest we forget

Goes to show even in a time of bloodshed and tears. We as people can come together on a important day if the year and celebrate the day of the birth of where it all started. Even during the American Civil War December of 1862. After the Union defeat a Fredericksburg. Union and Confederate soldiers came together to exchange coffee and tobacco and also buried there dead. This was absolutely amazing. Great Job. It made me cry too

Welcome to the rabbit hole of history and metal that is Sabaton. Enjoy your journey - and do yourself a favor and make sure to watch all their music videos to the end. These guys have a penchant for hiding little easter-eggs near the end. That said, let me offer you a few recommendations - all of which can be found on Sabaton's youtube channel. [Tissues are mandatory for the following:] No Bullets Fly (animated story) Night Witches (animated story) En Livstid I Krig (Live at Gothenburg) [Tissues are optional though recommended for the following:] Bismarck (official music video) 82nd All the Way (official music video) Blood of Bannockburn Uprising (Live at Woodstock Poland) 40 to 1 (Live at Woodstock Poland) Apart from that there is a 3-songs-in-one video from Wacken 2019 on the channel of the festival itself, which i can very much recommend, but Wacken TV tends to be a bit of a hassle in terms of copyright sometimes.

You should definitely react to more of their music for sure, including their latest release, Soldier of Heaven (which tells the story of White Friday (and more broadly the fighting between the Italians and Austro-Hungarians in the Dolomites and Alps during the first world war as well). Here is the Wikipedia entry for White Friday to give a bit more context to the story behind it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Friday_(1916)
