This is based on actual events. In 1914, the Germans began singing carols in the trenches, some of which the English recognized and responded to then. An unofficial truce was arranged, and the two sides spent Christmas Day talking, exchanging gifts, and yes, playing football (soccer to us Americans). The fighting started again the next day. The generals made sure it never happened again. The cross at the end actually exists. FYI, Joakim and Par started writing this song in 2014 but didn't want to record it until they felt it was perfect and reflected what was one of the most amazing events in modern history. As far as other Sabaton songs, they are all excellent, but I would recommend No Bullets Fly (animated story video), To Hell and Back (music video), 40:1 (live at Woodstock 2012). Side note, you should watch the interview the Charismatic Voice did with Joakim, it is very informative
@ryantannar5301
@ryantannar5301 2 жыл бұрын
this actually happened in several places on the western front independently of the other identical events happening at other battlefields. for some the truce was very short, for others it lasted weeks. for a while there people just said they were sick and tired of fighting.

@alancarter41
@alancarter41 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnf1619 I checked it out, a beautiful (and depressing) song. I'm not really big on A Capella music but this was nice. the 1915 truce did not amount to much since the generals on both sides issued orders warning of several consequences if 1914 was repeated, up to execution for treason. In one area the French and Germans got together, but mostly there was a lull if fighting and no intermingling of the two sides other than an agreement to allow parties to retrieve and bury the dead. By 1916, no one was in any mood for a truce due to the increasingly horrible battles. There is some evidence the Germans proposed truces in 1916 and 1917, efforts that went unanswered.

This song gets me every time. It shows how if we weren't on opposite sides, we could be friends. We are the warriors of both side we have a lot in common. After the truce the generals had to move the troops, since they didn't want to fight each other anymore. We had a saying in the Marines, "no one wants peace more than the people on the front line". To all my warrior brothers and sisters out there we will meet and drink a horn in Valhalla, no matter if we fought together or against each other. NEVER FORGOTTEN USMC

Joakim came to Sabaton originally as the keyboard player and was supposed to be an interim singer. His musical education began on the church organ. Don't expect him to play live, he rarely does it, though he records keyboard parts. Two excellent pieces of piano playing by metal bands are the live versions of Shaman's Fairy Tale and X-Japan's Endless Rain. Manowar's Hertz aus Stahl live in Germany, too. Manowar is the band that perfected that pride and strengh anthem thing before Sabaton coupled it with historical events for maximum effect. Anastasia, if you want another gorgeously filmed video, and brand new (album not even out), try Eluveitie (Helvetie, the ancient name of Switzerland in an alternate spelling) Aidus. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ-plGCliJyXrJI Fantastic song, too. Their transitions are to die for and there's a lot of them. As for Sabaton, if you like animations, don't neglect Coat of Arms. Any links you want, say gimme!

Thought for the Day: "Those who don't remember history are condemned to repeat it." ~ General Santana Dotson I read through the comments here, and I'm a little shocked, to say the least. First, I read some comments asking how Sabaton, being from Sweden, could sing about military history. Others have talked about warfare, and say war is unnecessary. I will say that warfare is a necessary evil. It is altruistic to say that everybody would, given a choice, get along. This is untrue, as there will always be groups of humans who, for whatever reason, will fight. They will arm themselves, and go to war. Whether that group is a street gang, fighting another street gang, over street turf, or whether it is a country having a formal military and going to war that way, it is a part of human nature to fight. Sabaton says at the end of Bismarck, "War knows no nation." It is because war is part of human nature, no matter where you live. We are all human. And so, Sabaton sings about the past to keep the lessons of the past fresh in the minds of those who didn't live during those times, or who weren't even there. Yet those historical events happened. We have the living history of perhaps two generations back, and the oldest among us to tell us about historical events of significance in, say, the Second World War, will one day be gone. In 10 years, it will be a century since Adolph Hitler took power in Germany in 1932. In the next 15 years, the fighting men of World War II will be gone, laid to rest as we all will one day. That history will be relegated to books and recorded accounts. But I say this to tell you, it is one thing to read about what happened in history, it is another to talk to someone who was there. Who fought the battles and wars you read about. In my lifetime, I've witnessed the following: - The death of the last World War I veteran - The death of the last survivor of the USS Arizona during Pearl Harbor, who was buried at the memorial - The death of the last survivor of the KMS Bismarck - The death of the last Night Witch in 2017, who flew as part of the Russian Air Forces 588th Night Bombing Regiment - The death of the last US Medal of Honor winner in World War II - And within the next 15 years, the death of the last World War II veteran, anywhere It must be taken to heart the "Thought for the Day" I've begun this post with, if for no other reason than to remember history and learn it's lessons. A museum is not the only place rememberance can happen. Thus, it is that Sabaton sings about history, and keeps that history from fading. The other part of this post is a reminder to those who see no point in war. Unless you have served, and put on that uniform, and swore an oath of service, you have no idea what goes through the mind of a Soldier. A Sailor. A Marine. An Airman. Those who fight, do so, so you don't have to. They spend months and years away from their families to ensure their home is still there when they return. In the case of Ukraine, it is a fight in their backyard, a fight Ukraine looks to win within the next year or so (hopefully sooner). So I ask you to not judge a soldier for what is good intent, for every soldier leaves hopeful, and returns, shall we say, changed. It is with every soldier who has the hope that perhaps by his service, his loved ones don't have to fight. Because the only way you can truly understand, is if you know what it's like to have rounds flying at you, when you're downrange from the enemy, or when you're fighting an enemy at the gates of your own home. This is why I have said before, and I will say again, in America, we have a saying: That we love our country, but hate our government. We criticize and decry our leaders all the day long. But we usually don't tolerate is the bad-mouthing of those that serve. And so I say to you, respect and cherish your nation's fighting men and women -- for without them, you would be under the dominion of a despot, a dictator, a tyrant, or worse. Thank you to all those who serve. Your service is very greatly appreciated. (' ')7 "Lest We Forget" Khaki Chums 1914

We warship Alexander the Great and Roman empire who basically wanted to own the world. I love USA and I can never understand why some citizens hate it. This country is beautiful. Sabaton has such complex history lessons some times that you get better picture when checking their MV first, or even Sabaton History channel about the same subject.

Hey I was at the NYC show too! Sat in the first balcony. That was a great show it was basically a two for one special and they're both amazing live. Epica & Sabaton easily in my top 5 probably top 3 atm. Hope u had a good time.

Enjoy that show. I just saw them at a previous stop on that tour and both Sabaton and Epica rocked it! I don't wanna spoil the performance or anything but just be ready with your phone light when you hear that piano begin playing, you'll be in for a treat.

Swedish here- I love history. But to be fair, I have learned more war history trough Sabaton than I did at school. Especially Swedish war history. :D And yes I watch a lot of history documentaries.

there needs to be a docuseries based on Sabaton's work. Fun fact Joakim Borden originally was the Keyboardist but switched to vocals till they got someone to be the main vocals, I guess they're still searching 20 years later.

So, as the story I believe goes, the Pope during the war pleaded for a cease fire for Christmas. Now some battlefields did this and interacted with the opposite side but no one can confirm because each side declares they were the ones who initiated. Sad part is a lot of soldiers were killed because they went to cross to the other side to greet but were mistaken for advancement and killed. And from what I've read, Sabaton had this song written a long time ago, but needed the music and lyrics to be just perfect. So, they felt the time was right and released it after many revisions.

originally joakim wanted to go into the band as a keyboardplayer. but well he ended up becoming the singer. since the official keyboardplayer daniel left the band and put up the band civil war joakim plays keyboards again on the albums although nowadays he has sometimes to share that with tommy the guitarplayer who can also play keyboards and sing just like joakim also can play guitar when necessary.

The Germans had a Tenor with them and he started singing “Silent Night Holy Night” the British soldiers did hear it and left the trench. There excists a movie with Diane Krueger. I like this story because it shows that most soldiers wouldn’t fight if somebody wouldn’t force them to do it.

There's a joke by Sabaton. At that time a front singer was wanted and Joachim had volunteered for the piano. At some point Joachim then began to mime the lead singer. Since then they joke that they are still looking for a lead singer.
