agree. non-popular opinion: this is better than studio version. Especially the first woman and the second. The first is like anger, fear, fight etc. the second lady represents grief, sadness, crying for something, acceptance with the fate. they complement each other perfectly.

She has sung a lot on backing vocals with Harry Moore, George Harrison, Small Faces, Spandau Ballet, Adam Ant, Jon Lord (from Deep Purple), Pink Floyd, David Gilmore, The Firm, Doji and Nick Cave. Brown released her debut album Stop! in 1988, and in this regard, she released several studio albums, one live album, one EP and three compilations, as well as three albums as part of the Homespun band. In 2007, she had serious problems with her singing voice, after which she stopped recording and singing live. Sabina, both you and the Floyd are wonderful! The word that comes to mind for me is authenticity both in their creation and in your reaction. I'm so happy that you mentioned the idea that singing preceded speaking in the development of human beings as a species as this is not a well-known theory (but one I have subscribed to for many years). You also mentioned that you had some difficulty in finding the right words to describe how you felt but I think this is perfectly understandable. Music is beyond words since it is the fundamental source of communication and speech (and words) are derived from them. Neuroscientists tell us that the ability to create and appreciate music is found in the right hemisphere of the brain and speech in the left hemisphere. Thus, music makes itself heard without the need (and control) of speech. Sorry to prattle on!

3 incredible backup singers = 1 Clare Torry improvising for an hour with just a few instructions from the band, she did 2 full takes and reportedly gave up on a third take saying in effect she'd already given it her all, she was paid £30 and she apologized thinking she didn't give them what they wanted. Didn't know they used her work until she saw the record in the store. Looking at the liner notes there was nothing about her contribution, when it really is half the song. It was on the Billboard 200 albums chart for 736 nonconsecutive weeks. Some say that it represents the stages of dying. If you note the recorded voice of the man stating 'I'm not afraid of dying, why should I be, we've all got to go sometime...' From 2005: "Torry provided the improvised vocal on The Great Gig In The Sky, and was paid the standard fee of £30 for her work on January 23rd 1973. However, some thirty-one years later she claimed that she composed the song, and asked the High Court for monies she believed were due to her, a half-share of copyright ownership and a 50 per cent share, possibly worth millions, of past and future income. Torry said they (the band and EMI) had breached her copyright and asked for damages and for "all illicit copies of the song to be destroyed". This could have resulted in the album being withdrawn from sale temporarily. This week, the High Court judged on the side of Ms Torry, and have awarded her a half-share on copyright ownership of the song. The amount of the out-of-court settlement has not been disclosed, prompting much speculation as to the amount."

This was an incredible performance, Pink Floyd sure was beyond belief all 4 times I saw them, this is but a sample of their many, many live performances, both audio and video, available on You Tube. They always had great musicians on tour with them from the the mid 70s on and their sound, lights and special effects are second to none in Rock and they are certainly in the conversation as greatest band period. That is true but as others will mention, you do need to hear this tune with the original vocalist Clare Torey doing the 'stages of death' vocals as part of the all time classic album Dark Side of the Moon. You owe it to yourself to listen to it sometime in its entirety. It is so great that such music stands the test of time and appeals to all listeners, no matter how old, where they are from or musical preference, when they hear them, they are fans! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶

Even going back far enough to where our ancestors had no words they could still communicate with all sorts of sounds expressing their personal desires. Many of us today could make it through a day without speaking one actually word by simply using sounds and motions. Even today, our names are just the sound we either agreed to or were trained to acknowledge. This (Claire Tory and Richard Wright) piece of art goes best when immediately following the song Time in my opinion, Try em together. Peace/JT

@sabina1118 Totally agree with this comment. The Great Gig was created ( not written or composed ) to end Time. Time slides into the Great Gig ( the end ) to finnish the message of side one.....The Dark Side of The Moon. Normally I recommend Pink Floyd live, but Time and The Great Gig are best enjoyed together as one song in 2 movements from the original recording......vinyl or CD. ORIGINAL is best......the remixes and digital destruction not only change the vibe and feel, they also alter and sometimes even remove the final brilliant vocal notes of passing. Should be noted that when Clare Torry sung those notes, she had no instructions, melody, lyrics or written music to follow........she made them up on the spot and in that instant in one take.

Pink Floyd, for the most part, put enormous effort into getting their sound just right in the studio, then in getting the concert sound to match the studio sound as accurately as possible. (The the famous extended guitar solo from "Comfortably Numb" includes every chord, every note, every bend from the original.) Part of the magic of the original is its spontaneity; in fact Clare Torry stopped in the middle of the third take because she felt she had lost the spontaneity and was becoming repetitive. Live performances can be either accurate or spontaneous, but not both. In the whole of history, there was one opportunity for that kind of perfection, and Clare absolutely nailed it.
