Obviously it isn't. Here is Sam Brown spanking it. Or you can grab the Clare doing it live one.

There are 2 trains of thought to this:- Clare Torry did the original album vocal and arguably the best version which she didn't rehearse and did in one or two takes. These ladies take turns at the vocals which to me adds different textures and they put their own spin on the part. Also there's a big difference in doing a great vocal once in a studio and doing it live night after night. It puts an enormous strain on the vocal chords, especially Sam Browns growling first part. So I'm of the opinion that I like both versions equally but for different reasons, and of course being able to see the emotions of the singers enhances the experience. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

Richard Wright requested this song for his funeral during his lifetime. He asked Durga Mc Broom, a backing singer from the Pink Floyd World Tour, to sing the song at his funeral. There is still an unconfirmed rumor that Durga was accompanied on the piano by none other than John Lord from Deep Purple.

As an "older" Pink Floyd fan, I would recommend the track "Money" (audio only version NOT official video as that's a cut down radio version) If you are new to PF it has alot of their DNA in this track. Lyrics are a sarcastic look at how ridiculous extreme wealth is in the face of extreme poverty. PF don't do songs about how hot a chick looks😉

Pink Floyd is one of the GOATs in Rock history, they've sold hundreds of millions of albums since their inception in 1964. They are the OG. This song is on the greatest Rock album ever, The GOAT, Pink Floyds "The Dark Side Of The Monn" album released in 1973. The album is about Life, Death, War, Money, Greed, Insanity, and Death, it is a concept album as are many Pink Floyd albums. This song, "The Great Gig In The Sky" is the Death part! These lovely ladies are singing from their Souls, while thinking about Death and Horror!

Originally, this instrumental track was only intended to fill the empty space remaining on side A of the album. Is there a more beautiful way to fill empty space than this? I say "instrumental track", since that's what it was initially, then the band members tried to add readings of biblical verses and then conversations of NASA astronauts on a mission. Still dissatisfied with the result, the band members then turned to Clare Torry with this vocal expression inspired by death.

The original is an amazing and original composition by the singer Clare Torey over Floyd’s instrumental this fantastic rendition is being performed by Sam Brown a truly gifted vocalist who worked with many artists and was an extremely successful singer songwriter in her own right throughout the 80’s and 90’s.

You have to listen to the studio version. Clare Tory was the singer and she improvised much of the song. She is the co-creator, yet her version only gets heard if you listen to the album itself. Her singing it wasn't filmed and so people miss out on her incredible voice and performance.

Pink Floyd had this track and they loved it. They just thought it would be better with lyrics. They could not come up with anything themselves that seemed to work. In the studio next door, an opera singer named Clare Torrey, was recording and Floyd music engineer Alan Parsons suggested she do a vocal run through. No words, just a gibberish vocal run thru. The band loved her vocal run thru so much they went with it and the rest is history. An accidental singer singing on a song she was never designated for. Just beautiful and amazing. There is a performance of Clare Torry herself singing this live with the band in 1990 Knebworth. Enjoy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHi7aIWuqLmBo9E

The song is basically about being told you are going to die.. going through the stages of anger, denial, etc all the way through to acceptance... no words... just emotions.

Unusually the original studio version of this beats every other version because without Clare Torry’s performance there would be no song to cover. This performance is good but they had g9 use more than one singer . . . Clare made it up herself and sang everything.

As good as the live versions are, the original vocals by Clare Torry on the original vinyl and CD’s are by far the best. But the remixed , edited and remastered versions are not as good. Best to listen to an original recording of Time first and then let Time phase into The Great Gig...... ( The Great Gig is the end of Time )

Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The doorman stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Richard Wright only wrote the music for a different project prior to the songs concept ever being thought of which was the results of Gilmour being asked if P.F. would ever do a song about religion and god, or as he called it.... "The Great Gig In The Sky" Results are legendary.

It was obvious to see the girl on the left was expecting Sam Brown the first vocalist was going to be Black , When she saw she wasnt, Her disdain was easy for all to see . Especially when the next two black girls sang. Personally speaking Sam Browns Vocals stood out head and shoulders in this version of "The Great Gig In The Sky" This reaction video gets a thumbs down from me.
