I’m surprised to see Dr Hossenfelder talk this guy. I’ve seen his 30 minute program series, where he talks to scientists for 15 min, then he says “maybe god did it” and goes to religion on the same topic for 15 min. As if religion is just as valid of a description and answers for reality. So, I only watched this for Dr Sabine. He’s a quack. IMO

Pat Moran Human didn’t know that earth moves since our five given senses could not detect such movement but it obeys all physical laws for earth to move. Having the universe created trillions of time based on human thoughts every single day violates the conservation of energy law we know today. Where does the energy to create these new trillions of universes come from daily?

@@thiennganguyen That is a good question and I do not know the answer. I am not a physicist but I think if the conservation of energy law would be the best explanation of why the Multiverse interpretation might be wrong and it could be refuted for that reason physicists would attempt to refute it using the conservation of energy law. If I understand it correctly, quantum interference definitely does happen under the certain circumstances. Also, again, if I understand it correctly, it is not known what is doing the interference but it is something real that cannot be detected by any known scientific instrument. Again, if I understand the controversy over interpretations of the phenomena in question, there are currently only 2 primary interpretations of the interference phenomena. One is the Copenhagen Interpretation and the other is the Many Worlds Interpretation. I do not think that either of these theories should be rejected lightly. My bias currently is that the Copenhagen Interpretation falls into what I would call the Simple World Philosophy because it insists that premises based on space-time physics should be used in choosing the best explanation while my philosophy that I am calling Explanatory Realism is based on quantum physics and I see the Many Worlds Interpretation as the better of the two. As always, I could be wrong. It just seems to me that our quantum mechanical reality is a multiplicity that is much larger and more intricate that we can currently understand.

@@thiennganguyen You probably misunderstand what "creating universes" mean in the Many Worlds Interpretation. Let me explain: in the Many Worlds Interpretation there is a single universal wavefunction that governs the whole universe, and this wavefunction never collapses. And when quantum stuff happens, it happens not only to the system we observe, but to our brains too. The observer is part of the universal wavefunction. This allows the observer to get entangled with the system they observe, and thus the observer gets into quantum superposition. The universe hasn't "split", it's just that now you're in quantum superposition of two states that almost don't interact. Many Worlds Interpretation call these states "worlds". So in a Schrodinger Cat experiment the cat gets into a quantum superposition, the observer then gets entangled with the cat, then the whole environment gets entangled and now everything is in a superposition of "cat dead" and "cat alive", and stuff that happens is so vastly different, so that these "worlds" don't interact. The universe hasn't split, there's still just one universe, it just that now it consists of 2 non-interacting parts, which doesn't really make a wavefunction much more complicated, it happens in every quantum system. So the conservation of energy isn't violated, the universe still contains as much energy as before the experiment. As of measurement problem, Many Worlds Interpretation basically shifts it to "what is consciousness" problem, because now we don't have wavefunction collapse, but we have our consciousness randomly decide which "world" we continue to experience and which will become unaccessible. Still the same problem, but now much harder to answer because now it puts consciousness into the mix

Do they? She’s good at saying other theories are not up to snuff but she didn’t actually add any new ideas here. Maybe she does other places. Don’t get me wrong, it’s valuable to have ruthless interrogation of others ideas. But for example just saying “meh” to many worlds isn’t really a refutation.

I believe that the probability that more very important breakthroughs in physic phenomena/laws will be discovered is very high. It was less than 200 years ago that Hertz & Maxwell discovered electromagnetic waves. Now, look at the benefit that we are getting from this discovery/development.

Once upon a time I was working as a subcontractor for a what turned out to be a clandestine USA defense department operation...it had a "front" that seemed fairly normal....radar equipment repairs and upgrades. I had lowest clearence, essentially no clearance. I was just wiring up equipment according to lists. One day I had to meet with the boss who was from India (probably Brahmin caste and had a man servant) to discuss budget. Rumor had it he had shown USA defense department how to find stealth fighters/bombers with conventional radar equipment all networked together. For that he was awarded USD 1mil and given a job as head of the fronted facility which actually did do radar repair and upgrades in addition to being his laboratory. BTW, he drove a gold color Mercedes sedan with rims plated in actual gold. I entered the building and found myself in a reception area. The receptionist notified the boss I was there and she told me to go through that door, down the hallway to the end and up the stairs. Immediately when I opened the door red lights in the hallway flashed, a loud beep beep alarm sounded and a recorded voice announced the non-clearance persons had entered. Open doors along the hallway slammed shut. I did see for a second into one of the rooms...saw what looked like oscilloscopes, wires, lab table. The boss was in a spartan office with a clean desk and on a white board I saw some scribbling about cost of a certain Sun computer...$65,000. He approved my budget and I left through a door in his office that led to the outside, then down a flight of stairs. I was hooking up wires at a different facility, the front for which was that of a movie mixing sound stage. The room was big like a medium size movie theatre. Most of the work was done and I was just finishing some connections in a floor trough in the corner. In walks the boss with 3 Hassids. They were talking but I could not hear what they were saying as the room was acoustically dead. The boss dimmed the lights, put a dvd in the player and pressed play. I could not believe my eyes. I can't reveal what I saw but it wasn't proof of ETs or anti-gravity or anything that far out. I immediately saw the great potential for the movie industry, like huge$$, and suspected the Hassids were from the upper echelon of a Hollywood movie studio. That was 25 years ago and still that tech is unknown...apparently classified. Soon after the demonstation (that I was not classified to see) the mixing stage shut down! I guess a deal was made. Subsequently I suspected the Hassids were Israeli and were there to see for themselves before approving purchase of some USA defense dept stuff for Israel. Some years later I just happened to be driving by the radar repair and upgrade facility and low and behold it was some other type of business. So that closed too, or maybe it moved. Some years after that I used the net to try to find out what the boss was doing now. The name by which we knew him is a super common name in India so search results turned up hundreds or thousands of results....I did not look at all their pictures but maybe spent 1/2 hour....none were him. My point being that this experience firmed up my suspicions (and the general suspicion) that secret govt projects really are further ahead than the public scientific community and they will classify discoveries/developments that have military uses. Quirky little aside: the boss had a dignifed and friendly personality...not pompous or weird or nerdy in any way. One day at the movie sound stage facility I was having a brief conversation with him in the parking lot when up pulled an expensive car, out from which came a famous athlete from India. I didn't know him by sight but the boss introduced us, and yes I did know his name and sporting accomplishments. The athlete and the boss appeared to be good old friends.

David Deutsch's multiverse interpretation of qm does NOT necessitate the extra assumption used by the Copenhagen interpretation, it simply accepts the best explanation of it, that there is a multiverse, which he explains differently than everybody else. His is the best explanation of quantum mechanics to date.

In the multiverse interpretation you have to replace the measurement postulate by a postulate for what a detector is. You have to postulate that the device with which you are making measurements and relative to which you evaluate probabilities is only what you find in any one particular branch. This assumption is logically identical to the measurement postulate. The multiverse interpretation is therefore as good or as bad as the Copenhagen interpretation. This should not be a surprise because you cannot solve a problem of mathematical inconsistency by reinterpreting mathematics.

We can take it for granted that modification of the Schroedinger equation is forbidden. The Schroedinger theory is super-accurate to one part in 10^12, and any natural philosopher will realise that we have seen enough. In a computer simulation of quantum mechanics we need to work out how to make use of a random number generator in order to get some variation in the result. One thing we can do is to add tachyonic Brownian motion which is orthogonal to the SE. Another thing we can do is to throw away the SE for objects heavier than the Planck mass and replace it with classical Brownian motion. Does anybody have any other ideas?

There are experiments and there are observations. In experiments the scientist can manipulate conditions in a laboratory to discover the effect. In observations the system cannot be manipulated, it has to be taken as is, with the conditions and scope of the observation limited in ways the scientist cannot change. Astrophysics has the restriction that it is mostly based on pure observations rather than laboratory experiments. Deductions from such pure observations will always be less robust, and so more suspect, than experimental tests.

It was Dewey B. Larson's great-but-widely-overlooked insight that the _same_ pair of forces that explained his interatomic distance expression - gravitation and the space-time progression - also explain the observed recession of the distant galaxies and the fact that, say, globular clusters with little rotation do not collapse into one mass. The way these emerged naturally in Larson's concept, unlike Einstein's, was anything but ad hoc. Admittedly, I leave out crucial details for now.

There is a major discrepancy between the logic and the history of general relativity, giving rise to some misunderstanding. The cosmological constant is not ad hoc at all. The theory starts from some postulates (roughly: equivalence principle, special relativity, Newtonian limit, general covariance). The field equations then can be derived, and they come naturally with the cosmological constant. That's the logic, and it is very straightforward. Historically, it took some detours: leaving out the cosmological term for simplicity, introducing it for the wrong reason, deleting it again and apologizing for it ("biggest blunder"), finally comes experimental evidence...

I think that light that comes out of a system like the sun we cant see it at night because its way to fast more than the limit they say, this kind of light is not broken light as I suggest in my books and posses 4 colors that are red, yellow and blue, the union of this 3 colors make the 4th that is white, when this light brakes then they double: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet, the union of this 6 make white ones again.

Also it seems that we do not deflect sunlight but rather absorb it. Maybe some of the other commentors know about visibility of light?
