Remember when WWE rebooted the ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) brand in the mid 2000s? Sabu was scheduled to headline in the December to Dismember PPV main event but was randomly replaced by Bob Holly.
Here in this Title Match Network exclusive, Sabu explains why Stephanie McMahon was the one who took him off the event. An attack angle was shot prior to the show and Sabu was replaced.
It turns out this whole incident stemmed from a script reading where Sabu was forced to memorize three intricate paragraphs for a promo.

It's a great example of why Vince McMahon is not the "genius" everyone thinks he is. The guy had a couple of genius ideas and obviously knows how to handle money, but otherwise he's not all that brilliant. He probably likes everything scripted because he's a control freak, but doing that means nothing is genuine. You're not seeing the wrestler's personality, you're seeing the character that was written for them as if it was a movie. You can do it that way, but that's clearly not what most fans prefer. If they insist on having everything scripted, they should at least have the wrestler's heavily involved in the process.

Watch the full interview... Vince wanted to make a big deal of his character, but Sabu laughed at him and stupidly mouthed off on a couple of other occasions.... Thus they changed their mind and tried to use him like 'just another guy' instead (hence wanting him to do promos). He screwed himself and eventually left rather than attend substance rehab (i.e. Put drugs before his career).....Silly boy.

It's weird they always wanted to change Sabu but with RVD he went into WWF, and did all his chants and ring moves unimpeded and moved up to the top of that organization., or damn near it. Sabu was a gamechanger with his insane variety of aerial moves!! I feel blessed that I saw Sabu wrestle a good amount of times in his prime in person when he was in ECW.

WWE constantly tried to change RVD which is why he only had limited success as opposed to others despite being a fan favorite. He was never even considered heavyweight championship material until one night stand was conceived.

I've always been a fan of Sabu, but he never really belonged in WWE. His style of wrestling, his character, his personality - none of it is a good match for WWE. That isn't a knock on Sabu or WWE. It's just the reality of it.

Man he was so cool when he was in the WWE. It’s how I was introduced to him. I loved him along the likes of Jeff Hardy and Rey. I think he could’ve been a real threat if he was given free creativity over himself. I think the issue is that WWE didn’t know what kind of person he before contacting him and treated him like any other new roster member. A few of his ECW matches and ones in Japan should’ve earned him the right to at least have a say in what he wanted to do.

This was around the time I truly accepted ECW was dead, RIP. I just tried to enjoy the new one for what it was. The next year of new talent (Punk, Morrison, Deniro) was quite a fun watch, before it ultimately become the rotten C show.

WWE Needs to go back old school let the wrestler or how they like to put talent put themselves into their character not just give them lines to read and memorize their lines just like an actor that's fine if you are doing a movie. The wrestler needs to be themselves it's more real and believable when they did that. Now they have to have scripts and also be politically correct when they speak. Plus they have blurred the line between heal and face so much you can't tell the difference and also the in ring story telling sucks. Another thing is they just using championship belts as props instead of making it important it's the number 1 thing to strive for. Belts nowadays are meaningless. Also when they got rid of kayfab hurt the business as a whole. I am glad that KZbin shows old-school wrestling. I don't even watch what's on tv anymore. I would be a fan again if the just changed back to old school. I am also willing to bet that their earrings would be allot higher but until then they are going to keep going down the tubes.
