I too grew up in the C of C. But it was a legalistic bondage that minimized the role of the Holy Spirit in saving and sanctifying us and placed too much emphasis on what we do to be saved, including keeping the sacraments. So I am very thankful for this refreshing discussion that lets me know that the Lord has been moving in the C of C to bring at least some leaders like Dr. Hicks and congregations into experiencing what true life in the Messiah Yeshua (Christianity) is all about.

This video and the one with Francis Chan have been timely for me. Thanks for doing these.

Awesome. I'm loving that Protestants seem finally interested in Sacramental theology. God certainly is doing a good work among His people.

I was a part of house churches for 20 years (Ruth too! (3 comments below)), and did communion in the house church meetings rather than the large group meetings. Someone baked an unleavened loaf each week, we all took a piece from that one loaf, and we passed one cup around (way pre-Covid 🙂). Enjoyed and loved that more intimate, group setting for the Lord's table. It was always sweet and sometimes really powerful (the presence of God) and even fearful at times when God seemed to be warning us about something during the bread and cup. I hope to have meetings in my home again some day so that I can revive that practice.

I pray that we can practice that at home too rather than in large meeting. I can't imagine how beautiful the experience is.

I’m charismatic and love communion. I believe that communion is so important. I get excited every time my church does communion and wish they did it more frequently. I do think Jesus is present when we eat the consecrated bread and wine. His presence is like what He said “20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Mathew 18:20. I do think He is present just like He is when we pray together in His name.

Great episode, enjoyed. The question at the end was a great idea, what is your wish list. Really enjoyed his answer to this one as well, I agree.

This may be another good one for seeing the Spirits' work in bringing us to the body of Christ in communion. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 1 Cor. 12:13

I admit that I'm probably a bit biased because I'm learning Orthadox Christianity but it seems as if this well meaning man is partially uncovering some truths that old Orthodox monks have known for centuries. He even quotes an Orthodox theologian.

Because I run the risk here of becoming somewhat of a troll, albeit a friendly one:), this will be my last comment, but just understand the Lord's Supper is my thing. You guys deal in so many topics (of which I know little), so you haven't had the time I have to just consider this issue in more depth. So, please consider my humble opinion as someone who cares very much to practice the Lord's Supper in a way that honors Christ and the new covenant. I appreciated where this conversation went at about 51 minutes (Hicks emphasizing celebrating the Lord's Supper as an actual meal), but for some reason you guys and Hicks still want to hang on to the more corporate "eucharistic system" (your words Josh) instead of giving yourselves fully to it and regularly leading your churches into a more biblically prescribed celebration of the Supper which is supposed to foreshadow the Wedding Supper of the Lamb. Are you guys sure you're being honest about why you want to retain the traditional church service "eucharist" ? Michael you mentioned that you liked the idea of the smaller bite size version because it communicated the idea of just a taste of the new creation to come. Of course a full meal would also do that since even the grandest wedding banquet here is nothing compared to the wedding feast to come. Perhaps there's other motivations to keep the more ritualistic version? I think so....because it appears to be the same motivations that originally took the Lord's Supper from its fellowship-meal context: sacramentalism and clericalism, both of which attacked the gospel and the essence and housing (so to speak) of the new covenant. Both attacked the priesthood of the believer. And that's why your question Michael, at about 14 minutes in I think, about how we encounter God in the Supper is so important. Since much scholarship agrees that the Lord's Supper was connected to the 1 Cor 12-14 style participatory gathering (worship was at table and in homes), I submit to you guys that the way the church encountered God was through the body of Christ, that is, the Spirit-empowered believers/priests contributing their own spiritual gift in the gatherings, which again, was at table. So it wasn't about the presence of God mediated through the elements so that people could encounter God privately, it was because the indwelling life of Christ was present through his whole body, the Church, where He delights to mediate His manifest presence through a variety of spiritual gifts. So, isn't it interesting that bishops not only took over the love feasts (and eventually banned them), but they also took over the gifts of the Spirit? The two went together, so, it follows that to see a return of spiritual gifts, leaders should emphasize the Lord's Supper to be celebrated rightly (biblically) in homes. Would you guys be open to truly investigating how claiming to be charismatic but maintaining current practices actually serve to hinder your mission to see all spiritual gifts implemented in the church? Are you willing to see how you are actually functional cessationists if you don't reform? I hope so. Consider watching all of my video response to your "3 Reasons to Go to Church" Josh. Or are you fellas not committed to destabilizing this theological echo chamber?:)

Sincere thanks for your insightful response Larry Bryan Burke. You have addressed the root of this whole conversation. I am certainly not a theologian but our being in communion with Christ in connection with sacraments is clearly not found in Scripture. Thank you for speaking truth.
