🇩🇪 The Cologne Central Mosque.(An Ultra Modern Futuristic Masjid), Largest in Germany 🇩🇪 (2023)
This is one of the most modern and the largest Masjid in Germany. It was opened for public in the year 2017 and has a capacity to hold 4000 worshipers. The initial plan to build this Masjid started in 2003 and after going through various bureaucratic processes and protests from different local and international right wing parties, on August 28, 2008 the Cologne City Council voted to approve the construction of the Mosque.
The mosque is designed in an ultra modern architectural style, with glass walls, two minarets and a dome. The total area of the Masjid is 48,000 sq-ft. The main prayer area is on the upper floor and includes a library just across from the main building. It also has a modern bazaar, shops, and restaurants on the ground floor, and a conference hall in the basement.
Muslims first moved to Germany in the 18th century as part of the diplomatic, military and economic relations between Germany and the Ottoman Empire.
The Muslim population of Germany is around 5.6 million, which is about 7% of the total population. The majority of the Muslims in Germany have roots in Turkey.
We drove to Cologne just to see this Masjid, and I am so glad that we did. We went there for the As’r and Magrib prayer and were totally surprised to see the futuristic design and the beauty of the building. I was very much impressed to see the modern shoe storage area as soon as you enter the Masjid and the abstract interior design of the main prayer room. There is a modern minbar and mihrab that are designed very tastefully and blend in with the surrounding walls and glass walls.
With these entire new modern architectural concepts, we sometime tend to forget the basic requirements for any Masjid. I was quite disappointed when I went to the toilet area. I was very much surprised and shocked to see urinals and no facilities for water in the toilet. This is something I haven’t seen in any Masjid in anywhere in the world. The Masjid authority could have done a better job in this respect and they should have known what the minimum requirements are.
