Still wondering how this is a punishment for ruining a whole state. The seva as a Sikh is a duty, can't be punishment. As a kid, and even now when I go home, I listen to kirtan for more than 1 hour daily when my parents hear it. Didn't know it could be punishment. Finally, the idea of toilet cleaning as a punishment clearly has casteist origins. Moroever, I can't believe that for all the things Maharaja Ranjit Singh did, marrying Muslim woman was the reason for punishment, keeping in mind the companion of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a Muslim by birth too. I am sure I am getting many abrasive responses to even put some counter to Akal Takht, but some things definitely need to be said. To me, this "punishment" is all a sham to somehow revive SAD, with Badals now operating the same way as before, just behind the scenes.

The only reason why India still a country with 70-80 crore poors, basically half of its population, and poor public infrastructure bcs we Indians gives vote on the basis of religion and caste and not on the real issue, such as, why RTO offices or gov departments in small districts are in pathetic conditions or why goverment colleges in small districts & town have degraded over the decades. The problem of Sikhism since the early 80s is : the Akal Takht has been held hostage to increasingly disorienting concentric narratives spun around : Miri, Piri, and Nashedi. From tolerating ( or turning a blind eye to ) co-operation of Khalistanis with Pakistan to redirect the epicentre of narcotics trade towards North India, to meekly capitulating in the face of pressure from influential farmers to lay siege to Delhi .. the corruption through "nasha" has become synonymous with the nasha of corruption. 4 decades of Badals and other elite groups shoving pious, ordinary Sikhs into a maelstrom of bad money, worse crimes and inducements to addiction ( the very worst ) have happened under the lazy eye of the Akal Takht. Time will not be kind to the Akal Takht and it's practice of doling out indulgences. The power centre remains unchanged because the youth are being driven away, one suspects, by the machinations of the very people in power. And all they get by way of punishment for their crimes against their qaum is .. cleaning of latrines ( that too, a suspended sentence ? ). Kaisi teri khudgarzi, kaisa tera pyaar ? Where's the justice, yaar ?

Either they did all the things they admitted or they did not. If they did then the punishment should have been at least 2-3 months of toilet cleaning by each person including Sukhbir. How is 2 days of seva a punishment? Even I do more than that at the local Gurudwara without any punishment. Local devotee women spend the whole day cooking langar. Unfortunately this whole thing just proves that Guru Gobind Singh was right about Guru Maniyo Granth. I don’t think normal humans at SGPC are capable of doing justice soundly.

Miri and Piri powers applied to the Gurus, not to normal human beings. The Jathedars key duty is to serve and administer the Gurudwara infrastructure and provide a viewpoint on religious matters where this is necessary.

Tell me where in the SGGS or any other baani from the Gurus, it says that any Jathedar will inherit all of the Guru’s powers. On the other hand, Guru Gobind Singh was very clear on “Guru Maniyo Granth” which obviously prohibits the powers you are implying from being inherited by anyone else

The issue is that a lot of people do “bhed chal”. If somebody told them the Akal Takht has the full Miri and Piri powers of the Guru, they say “yeah I already know that”. I am not saying that the Akal Takht should not be respected because that is our Maryada and for the Jathedar holds some spiritual authority for sure, but what I am saying is that the authority of a Jathedar is nowhere near the same zone as the Guru. A Jathedar is just an ordinary person who in a good case may be endowed with some spiritual knowledge. In itihaas this has been shown to be true - we have had many very very bad Jathedars of various Takhts as well as good ones. Nobody, absolutely nobody ever in history had the authority of the Guru. When Ranjit Singh bowed before the Akal Takht, it was for a religious reason alone (read about these incidents if you don’t know the details) not because the Jathedar disagreed with his policies. Ranjit Singh was sovereign in matters of worldly policy such as which lands to conquer, who to appoint where, what taxes to levy etc. Additionally, I am saying that the concept of the full powers of the Miri and Piri literally belonged to the Guru alone because the Guru reflected the Noor of God himself. Today in a democracy the Jathedars of the Akal Takht have some of the power of the Piri and perhaps it is time for the Quam to agree that the power of Miri power belongs to the CM of Punjab and the PM of India because that is who was elected in a fair process. Ranjit Singh won his territory through the sword and they have done so through the ballot. That was the way of that age and this is the way of this age and perhaps superior. But that is where Miri belongs after the last Guru. You may have a slight difference on the latter part of my assertion, but as a Sikh how can you even dispute something so fundamental as Guru Maniyo Granth and not creating new Gurus by proxy? How can you even compare that authority of the Guru and the authority of a human Jathedar.

If I were alive during maharaja Ranjit Singh's time, irrespective of what happened, I would have still joined his army, and marched off in the direction our maharaja pointed us to. This ruling no matter how legal under Sikhism, is still extra constitutional. Tomorrow we will have to legalize pandits in Hindu temples sanctioning punishment...the concept of fatwa already exists in islam. The last time they opposed the specially designed helmets for Sikh soldiers of the Indian army- for these guys their dictats are more important than the frontline soldiers life.

It surprises me that it was the Congress that created mess in Punjab. Zail Singh as CM under Indira Gandhi as PM propped up Brindranwale to have control on Akhal Takht, the spiritual seat. Come 1979, for strange reasons as Congress was not in power then, Khalistan getting propped up. Openly Brindranwale did not support Khalistan movement. Then came 1982 when the Golden Temple were occupied by Brindranwale group with arms and ammunition, Indira Gandhi then PM ordered army action which lead to serious desecration of Golden Temple. This lead assas8lination of Indira Gandhi and massive killing of Sikhs that followed, eading to many Sikhs settling in Canada, UK and USA. Post year 1991 many things were under control, until recently Punjab as a state is going through different challenges.

22.34 Akali Dal is the political expression of Sikhism in Punjab. If the Akali Dal is going down, it means Sikhism is going down. Everybody knows that hordes of Sikhs are becoming crypto-Christans and the trend is not going to stop. Reason for this is two-fold. First, like Islam, Sikhism became a political religion wherein it is important for a religion to have its political suzerainty as well. This became prominent after Guru Govind Singh. After 1606, the political Sikhism was directed against Islam represented by Mughals. Political Sikhism got a new lease of life with Ranjit Singh's Sikh Empire, though it wasn't virulently anti-Muslim. Second, now the political Sikhism has turned anti-Hindu as it sees political power going to BJP which represents Hinduism as did formerly Mughals the Islam. Hence you see Sikhs voting for Congress or AAP and not BJP, though Congress massacred Sikhs in 1984. Also there is not a word against Pakistan from the Sikh quartes where Sikhs are persecuted and earlier who drove out and massacred Sikhs along with Hindus from Pakistan in 1947. Also Sikhs are so politically swayed by the Hindu-hatred that they never protest against Sikhs turning into crypto-Christians. The so-called kisaan andolan mostly dominated by Sikhs in being anti-BJP also reflects the same Hindu-hatred. Formerly, Bhindranwale and now Pannu Singh are the great symbols of political Sikhism anchored in Hindu-hatred..

You mean the SGPC? Most Sikh families today are unlikely to boycott someone in their own family because he or she cuts their hair. The SGPC was set-up to maintain the Gurudwaras and preach the religion hence they've got to maintain the purity of the faith. For them to deviate from the tenants of the faith becomes hard.

Pakistani generals had no wish or desire to launch an attack in India in 1984. They were happy with a disturbed situation in Kashmir and Indian Punjab.
