@@rooroo526 absolutely agree, but neither is alienating just about anyone left who buys your product. This furore over Jaguar reminds me of the dying days of Holden, and everyone crying foul at the death of our local carmaker here in Australia, the vast majority of whom hadn’t bought a Holden in 20-30 years. But the real art of product design is making a product that appeals to everyone, not just any one group. Just look at the Range Rover - it is as at home on the school run in Sydney as it is pulling up to a club in LA, as it is ferrying a tweed wearing hunting party in the UK. It has universal appeal as an object of desire, just as a Porsche or Ferrari.

I think Manish is bang on the money. It's the name only. Nothing else. It did work for Mini. The new cars bear no actual relation to their namesake but they have tried to create something that pays homage to the original. Jaguar has ignored this. I know you can put the car alongside the e-type but really, there is very little identifiable . What they really needed to do was do develop a drivetrain that is reliable. That's what's been missing. The rear axle of the e-type was in production for over 30 years because it was so good. I feel that good design should be delicate, clever and complimentary. The design of 00 is overly confused, disproportionate, and unnecessary. It can't end well. As an afterthought, the long front might be the boot.

When you put out an ad so objectionable and off putting that current owners want to sell their old Jags you have a major problem. When you actually double down on the ridiculousness you’ve completely lost the plot. There is nothing that can save Jag. Nothing. They have successfully made their brand permanently linked with the LMNOPQ madness. Normal people don’t want to be mistaken for one of those weirdos. Chris is way wrong. Demand for old Jags will not go up. Quite the opposite. Unlike Neil, I hope the company fails. A company that despises it’s customers doesn’t deserve to survive.

The concept isn’t terrible, it’s so bloody minimalist there isn’t really enough there to criticise. But I agree that I don’t see the connection between this and the teaser ad. And given how long it has been since there was any word of a new Jaguar, I don’t think this justifies the wait. I appreciate they may be trying to be more cautious and see how EV mandates turn out in the coming years, given the present difficulties facing early adopters like VW and Nissan. But they should have a more definite direction and strategy than the Type 00. If Jaguar had taken a gamble and launched the new XJ a few years ago, up against the buck toothed BMW and the Mercedes EggQS, I think it would have been a runaway success. But if Porsche can’t sell a Taycan currently, I don’t see the Type 00 succeeding.

I think the problem is that UK car enthusiasts doesn't realize how little relevance the brand has outside of their very very very small inner circle. "You can't delete the brands history". No one cares besides enthusiast. Or not even that. A small sub-genger of car enthusiasts cares. And you weren't buying their cars anyway so you're not the target audience at this point. As you stated the brand hasn't made a profit in many decades now and it's not "excellent engineering" or "brand legacy" that's going to bring it back.

Saying they haven't made a profit in many decades and nobody buys their cars is grossly false, Jag was hot between 2015-2019 with record sale numbers between 2017-2019 then the pandemic happened and they slowly started rebranding themselves during that time like the horrible faclift of the F-Type and quality control went down and they haven't recovered since
@patrickmonkman81518 күн бұрын
100% this. TVR is dead, Triumph motor company is dead, a whole host of British car brands have been dead for decades. Jaguar have no god given right to exist or be successful, like every other company they must fight for that privilege which is what they’re now doing. Also not sure Chris Cooper on the top left mocking Gerry Mcgoverns voice is a good look either
@bobdobbs69698 күн бұрын
That's stupid. What's the point of rebranding Jaguar? Just sell the cars under a new name if you are going to completely change the character of the vehicles. Or do something intelligent and call the new ones 'Jags' and the old designs 'Jaguars'
@saladface89688 күн бұрын
Cant be more accurate. Moreover people nowadays want a shouty car (designwise that is). Look at bmw; by making cars like the m3 and ix that are designwise far inferior to previous models, they still sell boatloads of those. On very rare occasions, car enthusiasts make a profitable car brand. At the end of the day if they are able to invest the required time and money on the brand and try to make it a superior tesla in every single metric, I am pretty certain people would buy them.

In many European countries (including, I beleive, the UK as well), the symbol "00" on the door stands for the toilet. The new Jag's contraption resembling a toddler's cartoon of a car is aptly named 00 -- very tellingly, and very fittingly. RIP the great British brand.
@AntFlack8 күн бұрын
There's nothing wrong with the brand, or the cars in design or concept. The F Type is a gorgeous little sports/tourer in the classic British style. The I Pace is the best looking SUV. The Project 8 is just a stunning piece of engineering kit. Part of their problem is it isn't cool to be British at the moment, we've been told we're all horrible for so long that anything British feels a bit dirty, so that hasn't helped. But the biggest issue is they didn't finish the damn cars properly: they're plagued with reliability problems on the electrical side and that's hurt them for a few decades. In the days of the xjs, it was characterful to be a bit unreliable. These days though, no one wants to show off in anything that is likely to die at the side of the road every time they go to the gym. BMW's are amazing cars but no one would buy them if they randomly locked their owners in. If they'd just fixed that and the marketing, the sales would've come but when you let a brand's reputation slip, it's very very hard to get it back. The rest of it is solid.
@StellarGale7 күн бұрын

A few points of observation on this. 1. Most of the people, me included, are not the target market for this new product. The are aiming for 80% new customers. 2. If we, the complainers, actually bought Jaguars when they were available they wouldn't have had to try for a new demographic. We all claim to love Jaguar, but we very rarely turned that love in to a purchase. 3. The price point - £120k, is a bit irrelevant when most people are only interested in how much it will cost them a month on a 3 year lease. 4. The price point - it's about a 3rd of the cost of a Rolls Royce Spectre - the only other curret car that's marketed as an electric ultra luxury GT. 5. The side profile is absolutely stunning. The front and rear need some redesign. They are a bit of a featureless bulbous slabs.

What are they mean to do? Be like Alfa Romeo death by a thousand cuts? All 3 "volume" SUVs are shit, Giulia is outdated and costs as much as a Mercedes, but is VW build quality. On paper Alfa has done everything we would think would save them.

13:00 I feel as though the success of the F-Type proves that they didn't need a rebrand so much as they needed a good, desirable, flagship product that defines Jaguar down to a tee. Given how close they were to success, I feel a full rebrand was a massive overcorrection

They should have built the CX75 with updated styling and a hybrid drive train for 100k pounds

75k cars worldwide in a decade is not "a success". Porsche make nearly that many 911s in one year.

Love the emergency 🚨 response. Jag died when Ian Callum was fired people will buy it just because they can afford it… just look at the Cullen and the BMW IX to name a few vulgar examples

Ian Callum was not fired, He was retired from his position as a director of design at Jaguar.. I love his (Ian Callum) direction in Jaguar.. Really really I missed his presence in Jaguar

Type C racer, XK-120, Mk-1 sedan, Mk-7 saloon: same fabulous engine (and drive train) in FOUR guises!! Whenever Jaguar deviates from this paradigm it’s a rude beast slouching out of Coventry…

To Chris’ suggestion, I would like to buy myself my favourite Jaguar - one I can actually afford - a 1988 XJ6 Sovereign.

Hope the rego on your manual 3.6 isn’t D45 HFB. Came fitted with a Webasto sun roof with an unfixable whistle😁. Black electrical tape was my best friend. Great car when I had mine over 30 years ago. Have fun.

I'm quite liking it, at first I didn't really but it's really growing on me. What you also have to remember is that it is two years away from the first of these models and that will be a 4 door, might be another 12 months till the 2 door arrives. Richard Porter photoshopped a black version.. if that isn't every baddies wet dream car then I don't know what is.

The thing is, they're not really deleting it. They're pretending it's not there, but it all still is. The E-Types and XK120s won't stop turning up to shows; the XJ220 won't stop gracing bedroom walls. I have a feeling that if we fast forward ten years, if Jaguar is still around, it'll be like this never happened. The vid will be that weird thing that happened in 2024, the Type 00 will be as largely forgotten as the Buick Wildcat or the Cadillac Escala, and there might even have been a few tweaks made to the branding to bring it more in line with the legacy. Personally, I think a big saloon is fine, but it needs a very trick suspension system. They should design something crazy that has a huge ride height adjustment that makes the thing transformable at the touch of a button from bagged-level slammed to Sterrato-level jacked up.

I think you're all spot on in thinking that a lot of this "reimagine" business is Gerry McGovern playing the snooty "artist" while sticking Ian Callum with Jag's past failures.

All of this, the logo, the graphics, the car are utterly devoid of soul. There's nothing of the human hand and heart in it. Great English car designs have tension, emotion, humour and even sentimentality. It looks like Jaguar created the lot over the weekend with ChatGPT.

That concept isn't like the Audi TT where they could just put it into production. I struggle to actually envision what the final product is going to look like. I'll reserve judgement on it until then. If it actually looks like the concept at least I'll respect them for having the balls to do that.

This car is like a designers wet dream, but serves no practical purpose. The huge flat front challenges Land Rover for aerodynamics (of a house brick), the interior looks compact (from Harry Metcalfe's video earlier today) and it look massive and squat at the same time - Judge Dredd comes to mind. So this is a car for a rich boy with one mate or partner, who lives in a city with wide roads and open spaces so, as Chris Harris said "you can see things coming from miles when turning out of a side road"! And boys, you can't put anything on to the back seat or the boot, as there don't appear to be any - so Neil and Chris C, no worries about messing up the interior.

Crazy hypothetical question... Is there room today for a new era of coachbuilders? Not full automotive manufacturers, but coachbuilders? Would Jaguar be better served as a modern coachbuilder that used other manufacturers for the powertrain? Because, the Jaguar look has always been strong. It has been the mechanical side that always trips them up when it comes to mass production. If they just focussed on coachbuilding and leaving the mass produced bits to others, much like an F1 team can get parts from another, could there be a way to having design and profitability, too?

Unless Jaguar used their new advert for sheer publicity and now launch a petrol-only or hybrid, practical car, then this whole debacle is the death knell for the Company. Unbelievable how the TATA board allowed the Jaguar MD, Raw Dong Lover, to destroy the brand
@andynater18858 күн бұрын
I reckon the production version will be a stunner and quite a bit smaller than the concept pictures. They surely aren't silly enough to offer a massive, heavy EV that might sell 3 examples.

It looks like they designed both cars in AI. Because they are the same car and same philosophy. And neither of them will sell. Cadillac and jaguar are very much in the same situation. People buy the Escalade and the Range Rover. But no one buys the saloons any volume . Project 8 and CTSV blackwing are also the same car. Very good for enthusiasts. But no mainstream Appel. And even though both brands have premium luxury historic identity. They will be ultra luxury brands like RR or Bentley. And I have owned both brands Escalade ext and XKR

I watched Harry's video as well. Per my last post, I want Jaguar to succeed and can only imagine how important is is to a Brit. The concept screams 90's Chrysler concept and for so many reasons...yikes. Genuine fear and anger here. I started thinking about how and why Jaguar is at this compromised position and its so many many things large and small. I wanted buy an F type as it is still one of the most beautiful cars normal people can lust after and actually buy, but the sedans were about 70 percent of true potential. When I think of Jaguar, many great qualities come to mind and beauty is one to be sure. The sedans that graced our shores were lacking. Not ugly, but again, a short putt missed. The concept matches the video introduction and if it was one's intention to destroy then well done.
