I really, as an artist, appreciate the deep sense of empathy you exuded having to explain the reason you stopped. The genuine hurt and pain that you empathize with is difficult to sit through comfortably, and it's probably why, even now, I have a really hard time finishing the book Pet Semetary....it's a book that just exudes grief. Everything about being an artist is putting yourself in the shoes of the people you create and it can be deeply uncomfortable and even too much to bear...

This episode is kinda emotional... Well, as an art enthusiast, I really really understand the feeling why the artists cannot finished his/her work due to the emotion within the works. Like losing someone that he/she loved, or reminds him/her for the trauma in the past... It is very very human and you made a right decision to not made the "Children". And by the way, I listen you in Mais Oui! Podcast and I just recently knew that you had a bad Injury in the past but Fortunately you're able to pass those hard times and finds your way to become a sculpture, such a inspirational stories from you, never give up and keep makes some art 👍👍

I'll easily admit that I clicked this mainly for the thumbnail. I didn't read into the weight of the title, because this is KZbin, and sincerity is pretty much dead. But then I slowly got drawn into the process, watching you work on this piece which clearly held a special place in your heart that I will never quite understand because I too am poisoned by cynicism, as are the people who have eroded the sincerity across most of the internet. I know my comment is way late, but maybe, with the perspective of time, it can be to you and whoever bothers to read it. (Before I continue, Trigger/Content warning for the rest of my comment, basically same as the video.) I just felt that there was a disconnect between La Llorona and the dead child, that made it more painful, almost. In my mind I wondered, what if instead of walking away, she was actively embracing it, dragging the child into the river as she had done with so many others? Maybe this is just me, and maybe this is making it worse for most other people to consider, but I feel like La Llorona is striking because of that maternal aspect. A mother that needs a child in her arms only to keep losing it. To be clear, this change in posing would do absolutely nothing to lessen the tragedy of the child's death, and that is not what I am trying to imply. I just feel that to get to the core of this character, there needs to be interaction between her and the child. I feel like I am not quite able to put my thoughts into words, but the way she is just walking away from the dead body in your initial concept, felt off. The child needs a mother's embrace, I almost want to say, even though La Llorona's hands bring the opposite of comfort. I don't know. It is rare for a video to break through my iron shell of cynicism, but when it does, it does so in interesting ways, I guess.

First off I have to praise you for being brave, telling the story, and reasoning. As an artist we never need excuses for what we do, inspiration is just that. Thank you :) I appreciate the kind words. I'm actually currently experimenting with with private lessons. If it all goes well, I'll expand it to a wider audience. When I have trouble figuring out what I want to sculpt, I work on the basics. Just do a skull study or an anatomy study. Sometimes, that's enough to get an idea going.. sometimes, it's just good practice :)

I have to say having the dead child really makes a big impact on the overall theme and sculpture. The dead child brings home how haunting she is. It shows how the people in the area where she haunts feels. It's brings home the deep sadness she feels and what the people affected by her feel. I hope you make a new version and have the child there. Without the child this is just any other ghost or ghoul. Now the sculpture has lost the meaning and fear of this legend. To me it has no significance anymore. It's an amazing sculpture for sure but now it's just that a lifeless bland sculpture.

Agreed. It feels more like a mock up of the completed piece. I feel like it’s sculptures like these that you really have to disconnect yourself from the piece. To shy away from death is to shy away from life.

I really enjoy watching your videos, both the sculpting and the thought process behind it all. Whenever I'm working on a project (resin, sewing, clay, whatever it might be), I'll often choose a "harder" way of working on something just so I can put that emotion and work into what I'm making. For example, a couple years ago my best friend had a baby. I decided to make her a big baby blanket as a present. I could have finished this blanket in a day if I used my sewing machine, but I chose to hand stitch everything so I could really think about why I was making the blanket and why it was important. I feel like unless you're an artist - or a creator in general - it can be really hard for people to understand the emotions behind what you're working on. I feel like I'm learning through watching, with you explaining why you're choosing poses or design decisions. Your work is fantastic, and I look forward to seeing updates on your channel.

that's the thing about art, its a form of expression for most people, people can get lost in their art, there is a reason vent art exists too. i remember when I lost my father, I couldn't verbalize the pain i felt at that time, i still can't, but I could draw it. so i drew a whole lot during that time, expressing my pain the best I could, art has many intentions to be used for, and not to sound cheesy, but yes, art can be held to a very emotional standpoint and people underestimate the raw emotions and mindset people put themselves into when creating art.

I really appreciate that you explained what happened, what you felt, why you made the decision you made. I’m a writer. I have been for about a decade now. I don’t write because it’s fun (it is, though) or to create something a vast majority of people will connect with. My audience is small. And the content, though brimming with hope and victory, is also interwoven with deep grief and pain. I’ve wept over my work, countless times. I’ve accidentally given myself mental meltdowns, where I’ve physically become sick (dangerously so, a couple of times.) ultimately? Those narratives rarely see the light of day unedited. Maybe they’d be more emotionally impactful left as is. Maybe they’d be “greater.” But I cannot in good conscience release a work that might give someone second hand trauma, as it’s called. I cannot bring harm instead of cathartic healing. Despite this, despite the loss of content, it works out for the better. I understand the characters better, I understand life and loss and love. Even if those scenes aren’t kept, or end up heavily edited, they carved new shapes into my soul. Those stick with me. I learn empathy and care, because I’ve learned how to hurt. You did the right thing. Art is about capturing emotions and making others feel those emotions. But it’s also knowing the power you hold, and understanding the pain you’re capable of capturing. A true artist understands their own power, and chooses self restraint and respect to create something Right rather than “compositionally correct.” 💚

I think it was the right call to step away from the piece and remove the child, those are the type of feelings I'd say are good to listen too as opposed to more internalised feelings such as thinking it's just not working and wanting to quit cause you feel bad about your work. And I quite liked the video format it brought us, as it seems to me that the time that passed after sculpting makes for a different kind of reflective narration. Very informative! Eyes = empathy. Humans’ most expressive feature is their eyes. That’s why so many creepy pasta designs and monsters in media have no eyes at all (slenderman, xenomorph, quiet place) or have eyes that are unchanging/emotionless or even obscured. If we can’t read emotions from the eyes, we interpret the entity as unempatheitc, that cannot be reasoned with, and is incredibly dangerous. Eyes = empathy. We trust eyes. When we can’t read eyes, we’re generally scared of it.

Thank you for sharing this feelings and back story with us. It makes us realize that for an artist, your clay is something more than a lump of wet stuff and you identify with your work. I think it's amazing and hope to see something similar in the future (maybe not so gruesome or depressing) - the narrative behind the sculpture. Maybe a piece where she comes out from the river (she's visible from the bust up) and the boy is standing on the shore, still alive would be better but I'm not really sure. As for the La Llorona herself, she was always a desperate and very, very sad person (and story) for me. It speaks volumes to me each time I hear about it so I totally get where you get that feelings from.

Art communicates. It’s a message. And art at its core says “hey look at this. This is beautiful or worth thinking about” and when it comes to horror…well…it can only be beautiful when good triumphs over evil because THEN the message is “there’s still hope” I mean, you can have silly stuff. Wow fascinating. I think you made the right call. Art can be really powerful but it seems like the message of this one (as originally intended) is not one you were really wanting to communicate. You've done a great job with this piece. As an artist myself, I understand all too well the emotion locked within a piece as you work it into its final form. What I've learned to do over the years when a work strikes me, as this one clearly has you, is step away from it for awhile. Sometimes that helps and in some cases... it just makes things worse. Writing what it makes you feel helps more than you might think. Moreover, writing it from the subject's perspective can help resolve the devastating emotions locked to the art. Fictionalize it, crawl into the character's head and embrace what they're feeling in an effort to understand exactly why they're feeling that way. It doesn't matter if you're a good writer or not. It helps you to process it through the 'muse' in order to accomplish what you set out to create. In some cases, doing that can help the 'muse' that has inspired the piece to rest easier in your mind.

I'm guessing the grief is what got to you. The perpetual agony of killing children, and the horrible, gut-wrenching regret that would come with that. Like, I could feel why you had to stop right then and there because having to imagine what the child's face would look like. The terror, fear, and just...death. It's incredibly hard to think about or see. It's why I can never watch Grave of the Fireflies again, and why I sobbed after watching it. It represents a dark truth to reality that none of us want to think about. That the small and innocent can be taken away as easily as the old and frail. That death does not discriminate, and worse, that some people are capable of horrible things, even mothers to their children.

he forgot to mention that she killed his children because his husband cheated on her, and she wears a wedding dress to represent that too, you did a poor's people clothing, so she looks more like a banshee which is still cool, but doesnt give me la llorona feeling, as la llorona wears a lot of complicated white fabric. source: south american here.

I think getting into the mind of the characters is good although I think that your interpretation of what the character was thinking was possibly wrong, just my opinion though. I think if you put your emotions on how you would feel if you were that character is what is affecting you. Perhaps the character would not have been in their right mind, I think she would have been acting on love , thinking that she was saving her kids from something worse than death. In a desperate act she drown them to save them.

Other raconteurs use film or text to tell horrible graphically violent stories and people pay money to consume it... nobody feels guilty especially when the subjects are fictitious. You didn't create this character.
