@@alanriordan In case you're interested: SAD HILL AUGUST 1999 When I was in my early 20s (some 15 years ago) I drove drown to Almeria with four friends during my university summer holidays to see the locations that I knew from references in Eastwood biographies to be in that area. Mini-Hollywood and that other place nearby, Texas Hollywood, were great to see: the bank that Indio blew-up (with repaired back wall) and so on, but it was the graveyard from GBU that held the greatest attraction. I always imagined it to have been a Spanish Civil War graveyard that Leone had used, I couldn’t imagine anyone would go to all the trouble of building it, not with all the wooden markers and so on. I felt sure that the stone headstones and other grander memorials around the centre were from when the cemetery was less frequently used, but come the Spanish Civil War and the mass influx of bodies, the stone gave way to wooden markers - right idea, wrong war. Whilst looking around in the hills near Mini-Hollywood I came across McBain’s lodge-house behind which the final gunfight in OUATITW was filmed, but I hadn’t seen the film at the time and didn’t realise what it was I was looking at until later. Anyway, back to my recent trip. I followed the advice I found under ‘Crystal Ball’ on the Leone Website, bought a large-scale map of northern Spain and worked out where I’d have to reach - it’s a long way across France and no mean distance down into Spain either, however, what a prize! - somewhere I’ve wanted to see for so long. My three children, Edward 9, Matthew 6 and Emily 4 all like the GBU final gunfight - the music especially. I bought the CD of the GBU movie soundtrack which has a slightly different section towards the end of the gunfight track to the original, but detracts not at all from the excellent quality of the score. We travelled down through France and entered Spain on 23 August via the motorway and headed west along the coast towards San Sebastian. We then took the road south towards Burgos / Vitoria. The land starts to rise quite perceptibly and the nights, even in August, were cold. We camped along the road to Burgos, about 15 miles to the north-east of the city. Next morning we headed due south across country to a large dam with flooded valley behind and drove along the sides until we dropped down into Salos des Infantes. We drove south along the main road and turned right after about 2/3 miles towards the village of Caraso, The area began to look familiar, right sort of trees on the right sort of mountains, but nothing concrete. We carried on for a further 3 or 4 miles, through a fantastic gorge of blue/grey streaked rocks until we came to another village with a monastery (San Domingo). You’ll know the place when you get there - it’s the first hamlet after the colourful gorge and as you enter the village there is a small square with a hotel on the right, opposite the monastery. We went into the Hotel and had a light snack. I spoke to the waitress (in English as my Spanish is limited to ‘Si’, ‘Aqua Caliente’ and ‘Grasias’). She spoke good English and told me she knew nothing but her brother - who spoke no English and worked in the restaurant next door - might know something. We went to see him, and yes, he did know where the graveyard was and he would show us where it was, but could we drop him off at his house first? He hopped in and we drove up through the village to his recently constructed hacienda which stood on high ground to the north. He popped in and came back with exactly what I wanted to see - publicity stills from the GBU! I pointed to the cemetery sequences and got lots of ‘Si, Si’s’ and pointing further up the hill to the north behind us, along a dusty gravel track that ran alongside a quarry. I played the opening bars of the GBU on the CD and he smiled and nodded vigorously. Seemed we were on! We drove north for about 1 ½ miles along this track passing derelict stone-walled cow sheds until we breasted the rise and the road turned sharply to the right and headed along the lip of the valley. Looking down and to my left I suddenly saw it, concentric circles over quite a large area - but no centre paved area and everything was so green. We were viewing the cemetery from the top of the mountain Angel Eyes would have seen if he looked straight ahead of him instead of at Blondie (to make sure that he was concentrating on Tuco - believing him to be the main threat to be disposed of first). The track then bent sharply to the left and down to the valley floor. We crossed a cattle grid and turned through a gap in a fence, across a very suspect looking grate which I hoped would carry the car and onto the flat area where Tuco was blown from his horse by the exploding shell fired by Blondie. We parked and looked down at the bowl in which the cemetery stood. It was completely devoid of any memorial stone or scrap of wood from any grave marker. Many graves were visible as 5 / 6 ft mounds about 8 inches high covered in purple heather. However, I believe that the headstone that Tuco bashed into when he was blown over by the second shell was there, but not upright. The centre paved area was covered in grass and the small wall that ringed some of it was gone, but you could see loose stones which marked where it once stood. Looking closely at the centre I could see the stone slabs poking their way out from under the grass, a section about 14 inches by 8 sits at home now. The kids wanted to stand where they knew the three had stood, although my daughter was none too happy about being ‘the Ugly’. I assured her she was beautiful and it was funny to hear her say in her little four-year-old voice ‘You pig! You want to get me killed? When did you unload it?’ Lots of pictures were duly taken. It was a lovely, clear sunny day. The crows in the original soundtrack, added I thought for good effect, are real - we heard their great-grandchildren crowing away whilst we walked around. We camped that night near to where Blondie hid whilst Tuco wobbled about on the grave marker. Next morning whilst I was making coffee on the stove the farmer and his son turned up - so I told the kids to wave and smile sweetly and said ‘Buonus Dias Senior, café?’ (phonetic spelling!) I then reached for my phrase book and found ‘we are just passing through’. He smiled and spoke. I smiled and looked vacant. Anyway, he seemed happy enough and went off with a wave. We packed up and headed off north-east this time to the next village called Carrabanas (or something like that - you’ll need a good map to follow this properly!) and eventually back to the main road.

@@alanriordan While you're there don't forget to visit Agua Caliente (Los Albaricoques) from FDM. There are some excellent videos on the then-and-now theme - Herve Attia does it very well. Most of the locations are plotable on a map. If you have the films on a device it would help pin down the exact spots - but things change over the years and Mini Hollywood and the McBain ranch are very commercial now.
and i wonder -the depths of the nostalgia -to me a most powerful force... and the ghost of leone and the ghost (not past yet i think) of morricone... leone dream was all nostalgia and it rubbed of on us... now it's not the plot but the making of the movie and the music and those characters... if the bug bites you there's no losing it... it is deep -so deep. what else can actually touch it? i'm at a loss to find anything that deep. how is it so deep? because it touches the spirit world somehow like crossing into this other dimension... each time i watch that trilogy it affects me deeply. it's a bit of a puzzle but... answers more questions than it poses. i was a reenactor for similar reasons. to live through something that happened years ago. it is rather transporting and fulfilling. thanks and be safe! well done!

When I saw you were going to walk the whole way to Sad Hill from Silos, man, I thought "that is going to be a long walk going there and back, why didn't you use the car?" but, well, you kind of did it the next day. I've been there twice and both times I went there driving my own car. Now, Silos has this monastery but, not too far from there you have the monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza, some really, really beautiful ruins but if I recommend the visit it's not only because of that (which are really a reason on its own to pay a visit) but because some part of the movie was filmed inside, the part in which Blondie is healing from his sunburns and Tuco talks to his brother. Again, the monastery is well deserved a visit, but knowing that the film crew was also there... well. And just a few hundred meters north, or so, from this monastery there's the place where the battle for the bridge was filmed as well. There's not much left to see, in fact the river is now surrounded by trees but, that being said, the part where the Union army was attacking from is still lacking trees and you can, more or less, disguise the trenches. Some kilometers east of Sad Hill they placed Betterville, the prison camp. That's the only place of them all that I haven't visit. I drived by on my second visit to Sad Hill but it was quite a rainy day and there's no clear path to go there.
@alanriordan4 жыл бұрын
Thats great info, thanks a lot. I wanted to walk it the first time as I wasnt sure how bad the road was. I knew of most of those places but heard they were hard to recognise. I didnt have time to do more anyway so I will have to go back I think. The asociation might try to restore the bridge and battlefield which would be great.
@fadetounforgiven4 жыл бұрын
@@alanriordan unless you have some info that I haven't, I don't see the bridge being rebuilt any time soon. Not only because of the time, effort and money, but that means cutting trees by a river and altering, one way or the other, the flow of the river. That would meet Spanish burocracy at its finest. I don't see it happening but, hey, that would be nice. I think that, all things considered, and although it was not such an iconic place, Betterville would be easier to rebuild if you ask me. Now, I live some 500-600 kms away from there so I have nothing to do with them. The movie was filmed mostly in Almería, Southern Spain, as many other spaguetti westerns. I have never been there but it seems those places have actually changed one way or the other. Then almost all of the rest was filmed in Burgos, that being Sad Hill, the bridge and Betterville. Then there's at least one scene that was filmed in Madrid, one at the beginning when Tuco is about to be caught by some bounty hunters but Blondie saves him. The funny thing about the movie being filmed inside the monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza is that the surroundings have absolutely nothing to do with what the exterior locations for that part of the movie show. In the exterior shots you can see it's quite a plain area. However, in one of the scenes inside the monastery, I think it's when Tuco talks to his brother, you can see through the window it's not plain at all. In fact, you can see the ruins of an old church or so on top of a nearby hill. If you will, you can check my latest video (I'm not trying to spam or anything, it's just to give you a reference as I have not found yet any video about Sad Hill that includes footage from this monastery) about 2:40 in, you will find that same old ruined church or chapel. It was a pity you didn't visit them, I mean the monastery and the bridge area (again, there is next to nothing left in the bridge area, is hard to recognize but, still, it's really near thte monastery and, anyway, it's on the road to it). If you came from the north, from Bilbao, it kind of makes sense. If you look it up on the map, it will suggest you some shorter or allegedly faster ways to Silos. But the most interesting one is going all the way down the N-234 to Hortigüela and turn right towards the bridg area and, a bit later, the monastery. I would definitely suggest going to Silos and then going uphill because the reveal it's simply great. There's this sense of vastness, of great emptiness with such a beautifull horizon of mountains that is just totally amazing. At least for the first visit. But now that you have alread gone there, what I would do after stopping by the monastery is keeping on that road that leads to Covarrubias, the BU-905, but when you are about to cross the second bridge over the Arlanza river, you just don't but keep on over a path of dust and gravel (kind of the one from Silos to Sad Hill but way more gravel at the beginning and way, way more dust after) towards Contreras. I drove it with my own car in quite a quick manner and it was really fun. After Contreras you end up at Sad Hill. It's just the same "road" that brought you from Silos. The only "problem" is that the reveal is not as spectacular as from atop the mountain. But if you want to get there in the quickest way possible after having some nice visits, that's the way to go. Thank you!

Hi my name is Alberto and I live in Italy precisely in Tuscany. I saw your video and I congratulate you ... you crowned your dream ... I personally have three places that I call "my soul places" which are Monument Valley, Sad Hill and Cong (The quiet man). I don't know if you saw an interesting documentary about Sergio Leone called "The way i see things" which I try to pass the link to at the bottom of the message. Shortly after 22 minutes the director Giuliano Montaldo tells an episode that happened to him together with Sergio Leone at Monument Valley ... listen to him ... and here comes my question ... a personal curiosity ... When you were in Sad Hill what feelings did you have? Did you get the impression that Segrio Leone Lee Van Cleef and Ely were looking at you? or what does it feel like? I repeat it is my personal curiosity if you want to answer me. However good good good you did really well to embark on your journey. I greet you with warm cordiality Alberto kzbin.info/www/bejne/g52vkmiAr5hmpq8

Hi Alberto, thanks for your comment and I have seen the video. When I got to Sad Hill I felt many things, mostly that I was dreaming and that I was part of the movie. There is an amazing presence there and when I think back about my visit it feels like a dream. A friend said to me that every time he watches the movie it is like seeing an old friend. Well, going to Sad Hill is like visiting an old friend :) It is for sure one of my top soul places as you so well put it.

I think they are currently improving the roads there too. The association dont want it to become a cheap tourist attraction, they just want to keep the site alive.

Oh, I liked the extra footage, the dubbing was strange, but Lee Van Cleefs voice double was pretty good I thought. Anyway I'd watch all extra footage from this movie :)

Thanks dude. Horse would be great, I've seen videos of bikers doing it too. However you get there, just get there!
