The wiring in these cars pre 96 is always suspect. Typically it goes like this: the maf sensor wiring insulation deteriorates to the point of shorting out (especially if the wiring gets disturbed to service intake boots or throttle actuators) at which point the engine goes full rich which in turn washes out the cylinders causing excessive friction to destroy the rings and cylinders. The MAF wiring is separate from the injector harness which usually gets replaced. If you remove some of the insulation from the mafs wiring it will be very obvious and the deterioration usually runs all the way to the ecu "coffin". Unfortunately mercedes used a white glue to bunch the wires together at the grommet leading into the coffin so to remove the maf wiring properly by de-pinning it at the ecu connectors and completely removing the bad wire will result in other wires getting damaged. Best to build a new lh and rh sfi harness from the ground up. If you have this issue going on you will absolutely fuck that mint engine you are installing in short order. That is the only way a sub 100k mile m120 dies if it was otherwise maintained.

Low mileage means the car has sat for extended periods of times. That means piston rings can stick and valve seats can corrode, causing compression leaks. It makes perfect sense. I would trust the 200k+ mile car over the sub-100k mile car 95% of the time....

These engines can be a bit finnicky, same with the v8 of that generation. The fuel system can just randomly cut power and its hard to diagnose. Fuel filter, fuel regulator, vacuum hoses... it just goes on and on. A specialist can diagnose it within seconds but its hard as just an amateur who isn't used to these stock m120s
