@@LeathercraftMasterclass no I meant awl. I work at Tandy and we have them in 3 styles. I just want to buy one and was wondering which one is most useful.

​@@williamseay9743 Ok. A round awl isn't for stitching with as you won't be able to push it through leather. Useful for marking, making holes wider and tucking stitches though. A diamond awl, also called a saddlers awl is what you want for stitching. Most French tool makers produce a standard 4 faceted diamond awl blade, however I've never heard of a French style awl.

@@LeathercraftMasterclass Philip, I have seen (somewhere in online tool-land) a "flat" awl. It appears to be essentially a long single tine iron, which matches the size/shape of the marks made by French style irons. Ergo: diamond shaped awls go with diamond shaped chisels, and flat awls go with French style irons...and tradition is abandoned in lieu of marketing.
