At my age of 82/83 I’m going to attempt to be more mobile, so now its not which way is better, it’s about weight walking in. If I have a long ways to walk I don’t need 15/20 more pounds. So I’m experimenting trying a form of saddle hunting by using my last ladder sticks top step to rest & place my feet. I don’t plan on sitting ever longer than 3/4 hrs. Not worked out all the details but will go trough some tests this summer. Keep up your pod casts / tks !!!

Man guys this was not a fair comparison! Dan has set up a million times and this guy on the first tree seems like it was his first time. I’ve hunted trees exactly like this with a saddle and hunted exactly like Dan did. So we would have to call the first tree example a draw.

Right? And I will also go so far as to say that tree at the edge of the swamp was virtually unclimbable, for most hunters with any set up. Dan's comparo didn't take the Dan factor into play. Most hunters aren't ok with overly challenging climbs and set ups. I am sure that if he liked saddles and wanted to, he could climb any tree that he currently climbs now. Now, his criticism of having to learn how to negotiate your bridge and tether while shooting is a steep learning curve, is VALID. Very valid- my string was rubbing against my bridge (I had no clue) on a shot last fall and the pressure on the string caused the back third of the arrow to jam into the biscuit and break at launch. Seriously the scariest .003 secs of my hunting life. Not gonna lie my next three sits were from my old climber 😂. Luckily I had a chance to get "back in the saddle" for a late season doe hunt and work through that issue. I suppose it is like anything else, saddles have their quirks just like hang ons- I for one (an unremarkable hunter) like my saddle and plan to keep at it until I am expertly proficient with it.

I like both and use both! Treestands have their use and saddles have their use. If I am going back in I take my saddle for weight but if I am going to an easy spot ill take my stand for comfort. Both have their advantages and if your a serious Bowhunter you should try both and own both and use what works best for each situation. There is always gonna be a tree thats better for a treestand and a tree thats gonna be better for a saddle. Each situation is different and sometimes you just sit on the ground. This argument between saddle vs treestand is ridiculous. Because most people are on both sides with products to sell. Both have there place and don't look at them like it is one over the other but rather they both have a place in your hunting gear.

Like the guys from Tethrd say. The saddle is another " hunting tool" to use. I use a saddle probably just as much as a tree stand. I like both and am just as comfortable in both. The main thing about using a saddle is you do need to practice with it and you do need to be comfortable with it along with having no issues with height.

There are only 2 reasons I mainly hunt from a saddle. 1. The weight. If I could afford a beast stand weight may not be much of a problem. My saddle setup is just easier on my back to carry. 2. The comfort. I can sit longer in a saddle than a stand with a fixed stiff platform. Dan's saddle guy was a bit timid with his abilities. That shot is easily made a multitude of ways especially if you have a ring of steps. It really helps shoot a true 360. I also still keep a couple climbers out in the woods. Sunday I was reminded why I stick to gun hunting from them, the stand gets in the way when trying to shoot behind you.

You dont have to hang out in a saddle you can hug tight .Its just how comfortable you are in it .And sometimes you look like a trunk .This year i took my buck out of a pine in my saddle .I also put up a stand that i took 2 doe .

I switched to a saddle last season and put a couple hundred hours in. For me it's the lightest most comfortable setup I've ever used. I like it. It's definitely not for everyone.

Stands come in many types and under a specific circumstances they all have their purpose. For years I used a LONE WOLF SIT AND CLIMB ( 30-35 years or more). It was far better than than what I originally used. Prior to having various portables stands, as a kid I climbed trees or built ground stands from existing limbs and trees. In those days the deer were not educated and fewer hunters. I remember the day when deer never/seldom looked up. We all know they are so well educated now, if there is any change in the area where they live it never goes unnoticed. Watching the many videos out there, I think many of our skilled hunters ( in the videos) move way to much showing us trails, bedding areas and more after they are in their stands. If these individuals thing deer sit back in areas watching where hunters go, why would the deer not see you waving your arms explaining why you are there. I truly enjoy the videos of today. They take me places I can’t go at my age and health the way I once did. Ben Pearson gave me my first bow and set of arrows when I was a very young teen Agee. He and a friend ( do not remember his name). They hunted a ranch each year I as a kid worked on. He taught me how to walk in the woods, breaking my cadence into animal style steps and step and place you foot/boot down on the outside of your foot and roll your foot over flat. He taught me how to cover my sounds to sound like other animals in the woods. I’m telling you this because there is so much to making your hunt special. Enjoy it now and may we all work to keep our hunting lands available and pristine. God gave us this wonderful opportunity. Respect what we have, treat is as if was yours,….because it is .

Absolutely! My climber was cozy but a hang on stand doesn’t allow you to sit in a comfortable position and I end up shifting and moving more. It’s also much easier for me to hunt out of my Cruzr saddle in those odd trees.

Great video comparison! I would of liked to sden s comparison between Dan in a stand and a guy that's hunted out of saddle as long as Dan's hunted from a stand. In personal experience hunting from a saddle using a ring of steps in junction with a platform you can keep the tree between you and the deer 100% of the time. And with the steps you can shoot 360 around the tree. It just take time to get comfortable on the platform and learn how to use it.

Those trees you pointed out Dan are IMO custom made for a saddle. Those kind of trees are why I started hunting out of a saddle but I am not afraid of heights and often lean against the tree when needed. Also, in several cases you know where to expect the deer to come from so you plan for that and put the tree in line between the two. Case in point, at the first tree he was talking about getting the bow to the right of the tree to shoot the shot where you took your buck but you had your bow hanging on that side (I think anyways) so you had some indication that that would be your shot. Both of you could have gotten the bow from right side to left side easily imo. Very enjoyable to watch this. I mixed both methods last year in Kansas and decided to go all in on the saddle going forward. Thanks for this video !

I've used a saddle for several years and agree with all the points made. A great assessment from both perspectives. I like the light weight and compact nature but I've had issues finding a good tree where I wish I had a stand. I've been planning on using a stand more again next season. My gut tells me I may find a stand more conducive to how I'm hunting these days.

That was my thinking last year so decided to wear my saddle and use the assault as my plateform and used it both ways. After that experiment I am saddles all the way now.

If anyone thinks they are an expert saddle hunter, and they would like to come out, do a video with me, set up in the trees shown, you can pick a spot or two also. I will film from the deers bed, from satellite positions, and we can take some shots out of the trees, and afterwords we can debate the results honestly and openly. I would love to have you teach me how saddle hunting will improve my success rate on mature bucks... I have yet to have one person tell me a real advantage to what im using, that will put more bone on the wall.

As someone who is very adept to using a saddle in treework as an arborist I was using an Eastern climbing rig 20 years ago if yo want the greatest mobility tether 4-6 ft above your head you are then able to come under the tether to turn 360

As hunters we have many tools available to us. No one is perfect in all situations. Each has disadvantages and advantages all depending on the situation. Great vid so far

Loved the video. I think its funny how everyone wants to hear your opinion and comments why you hunt the way you do, but when they don't agree with their prospective that you are "biased." Of course you are biased, to where you hunt, how you hunt, your experience, and what your preferences are. Everybody will always be biased to those things. Why there has to be a "best" option for every situation is ridiculous. I guess if you are hunting deer on a leash or can predict the future you can pick the best option for that situation, but for the rest of us we use our best judgement and go out and hunt. You got a point with the leaning trees, you’ll need to show a video with the beast stands capability’s as far as setting the most extreme angle it can hold, and close up shots of the stand itself in action in punky trees. I hunt out of a saddle , love it, shot deer out of it, I had 1 tree that was a leaner bad and gravity wasn’t so kind, that said let’s see the stands angle capabilities- I think that would be a big selling point. great vids, keep on !!

And another thing you climb in to your spot and you dont cut no branches, just like a tree stand, you analyze and go up were you no your covered, wether its 6 ft or 20, you can go up any tree just like a stand, but way more advantages with sling, again you have to practice, practice, practice until perfect

I've thought about using my saddle with your stand so anyone that feels the need to pull you down on this video can just relax. I like to sit . The way Dan's deer came in, it would be no problem to get the bow over to the right side if you do it early and if the bow wasn't already on that side. Same timing complications as any bow hunter in a stand up there.

I got very good and comfortable with a saddle last year. I have a lone wolf climber tree stand seat that I modified with a belt to strap it to my feet so I can inch worm up a tree fast. It works great in the right tree. I am limited with it though. Certain areas I still need climbing sticks and I also think a beast stand would work in in some trees that a saddle wouldn't. Might be a good idea to have both and use either or depending on where I'm hunting and what tree I'm going to hunt out of. Key would be to find my spots post season for next year and pick trees for each spot. Then decide which set up to take based on the tree details. I will say my climber saddle set up is extremely light. Which is a big plus. I'm talking like the whole set up is under 10 lbs. Its best to be as versatile as possible. Good video. I'll be getting a beast stand as well.

I am a stand man myself, I gave the saddle an honest try but thought there was too much movement, and to much little gear to setup. If a guy is comfortable one way or the other though, I say send it 🤘

Ive been doing this stuff for 40 years. Ive used climbers and stands for run and gun.couple years ago i got a saddle. I found that being a bigger guy makes it hard.if you had a bigger platform you could turn an shoot .i use my saddle now for a tie off system and hunt out of a stand the best of both worlds. Works great for hanging stands and im allways tied off these days.

The main points I took away from this is the extra movement to get around the tether. In this example it is a perfect example...of why it is a PINTA. I can it a 50/50 like anything.... Dan is right handed and has the bow hangar set up on the right side of the tree. That entire set up is to shoot off of the right side of the tree. So the dude in the saddle, saying its hard for him to transition from shooting the left side of the tree to the right, well if he set up like Dan, with the bow on the right, it wouldn't have been an issue. Dan literally set up his stand and bow hangar backwards. I'm all about switching things up to make it work, but this is definitely not great comparison. And could you find a bigger dude to stand on a smaller platform, lol.

I don't care what any of you comment. Dan has some very good points in this video. And I'm an experienced ex saddle hunter. Put 3 yrs into and was constantly getting busted or picked off. For many reasons, such as moving or skylit and so on. And anybody that says they can hunt the leaning trees in this video is full of crap, period. On the lean of some of these trees if you tried to swing around in any direction you'd be fighting swinging all the way around. In my experience you have to hunt trees that stand relative straight up. Which is almost impossible to find. So yall get off dans back. Cuz everybody has their own opinion. This is his. And his wall proves his point.

I’ve saddle hunted for the last two seasons. I’m going back to a stand for 2021. I tried several saddles and several platforms. I found a system that I liked but I still had days I couldn’t get the saddle dialed in. I found I moved way more in a saddle. Leaning trees to me are more difficult to saddle hunt out of. I just don’t like it as much.

I have both and use both. Me personally I only use the saddle on short hunts due to comfort with sciatica issues. I also sit on the ground a lot because I like being eye level with the deer. And naps are so much better on the ground

I put a wild edge step on the other side of tree which makes 360 a lot easier to do. And some of our hikes i straight up for an hour the light weight is huge. Not for every set up but it has it's place

I use both and leave the saddle on when I am in my stand. The saddle is a benefit for installing a stand. and I feel more secure in the saddle when leaving the stand with my descender. I am 65 years old and feel safer using both together.

I do find this video informational and nothing against any of the guys in this video but I feel it seems one sided. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages but it should have been compared with a saddle hunter like John Eberhart as well as one of his successful spots. I wish I had more opportunity to use my LW hand climber. But I never know what tree or where I will be hunting. I run an alpha with 4 LW sticks with a simple loop aider on two of them made out of paracord. One trip up the tree. Quiet. Slow. My next stand will definitely be a beast stand!

There are positives and negatives to all setups. For me the saddle works best where I hunt and I choose it because it's the lightest option. Here in eastern KY these Ohio River hills are big and steep and the public I hunt is very crowded and you have to go up and down them to get away from others. I missed a buck from my saddle and killed one the same day and both shots could have been done from a stand. I really don't see why guys say it has more shot opportunities. Idk what deer is going to allow you to swing around the tree like some guys show lol.

When I’m up 25 + feet in a saddle I have no problem swinging around the tree without getting picked… I actually rarely get picked in my saddle unless I’m moving a lot and not paying attention…

Dan. You do have to be fair though. You said you hugged the tree so the deer couldn’t see you. Then the footage shows the camera go from one side of the tree to the other. You definitely had camera movement. You would also with a saddle, but to use that example was not really realistic. Also, if you had someone with even a little experience in the saddle, that shot is very easy to make in a saddle, and I think it could be argued that in a saddle you would have been more consealed behind the tree because you can slide behind the tree more. I’ve hunted out of stands for forty years, and still do, but the saddle (one year) has been great for me with a bad back. I feel safer, more comfortable, and much more mobility to shoot. If you stay behind the tree from the deer, your movement is concealed. And I’m simply more mobile. I still loves stands, but was no where near a fair comparison at all. If you watch it and are constructive, you would have to admit this yourself. I’m a big fan, but I’m real. I just had to comment. Keep up the great videos.

Lol. I’ll hunt any tree any where in my saddle and make it work. Shot more deer this year out of one than i ever have. After 16 yrs fighting stands up trees on lands I can’t cut branches I just position in a way that works. No matter what I’m using. Idc if the tree is crooked, leaning, forked, thick cedar doesn’t matter. Now don’t get me wrong, I still use stands rarely just cause I spent the money on them. I hang and hunt every hunt. Personally I get away with longer sits, quieter, faster, lighter. Call it hard headed, I call it determined. For example, the second tree I’ll set up at the crook not over it. Going over my the tether is a problem if you don’t practice. If your prepared and realistic about your own ability there isn’t a problem unless you make it one. 4/5 deer I shot this year I had to go up and over or under the tether. Also, leaning off the tree you look more like a branch than you do a blob which saved my bacon 3 out of 5 deer this year. This is just my experience and my opinion. I often stand without the tether tight behind the tree and lean when I’m tired of standing I lean, for this reason I feel I get away with not being spotted far more than if I were sitting on a stand. They each have pros and cons, but the limitations of either are what you make of it. Idk why it’s so hard to conceive the fact you can stand on a platform and not lean off a tree. Just like a stand. That last tree you used as an example I’d put my back to that tree and stand the whole hunt, in a saddle.

@@Brian-R hunting NJ public land in a world of tree stand hunters this has not been my experience. Infact it's the exact opposite. I hunt very high stem count thick flat heavily wooded land and I can assure you, I haven't been busted in my saddle yet. At least not by deer I have laid eyes on. More often then not I hunt just off wind, 20' high give or take and by time they can spot me it's too late. And when they doo look up they give it a head bob or two and go about their business. I specifically look for split trees or cluster of oaks for this reason. Granted, you can't always be in a set up like that I will never set up in a single sky lit pine or oak, I'd rather plant my self in the middle of a lural and take my chances on the ground before I go sky lit. And to make the argument I can't stand on my platform with my back to the tree just as you could in a tree stand is ignorant. If you can stand on a tree stand platofrom I can 100% stand on my platform. And not only that, I don't have to cut near as many branches to fit my platform between them as one would have to do with a stand. I own stands and hang & hunted them for 16 years prior to going saddle so I know this to be factual.

@@Brian-R I’d be happy to show you buck beds 60 yards from set ups any time you feel like coming to nj. The lay of the land is such it is just purely beneficial to set up in the set ups that I do. If it wasn’t I wouldn’t hunt it. I shot 5 deer last year 4 of which were mature bucks 1 old nanny of a doe with 22 other non shooter deer walking under me or within bow range and logged every one of them. And that’s only hunting on gov holidays and Saturday’s. Regardless of what area I will hunt where I need to be by any means necessary, it just works out as such that the typical trees I am able to set up in are as I described previously. You can sit there and doubt and type all you want, my consistent success speaks for itself.

Then go re read my comment. 5 deer shot. 4 bucks 1 doe. 1 fall bow, 1 permit bow with purchased buck tag, 1 permit muzzleloader with purchased buck tag, 1 six day bucks only, 1 doe winter bow. = 5 deer. 100% legal. Hunting various spots almost never the same tree twice and staying out of the woods in order to keep pressure down. I let my outrageous number of cameras do the scouting for me during the week and set up mostly evenings except when mornings seem optimal. Don't ever accuse me of poaching I was raised right. Never have and never would. Those that do are scum of the earth and shouldn't be aloud to step foot in the woods. With a freezer full of meat, I have no need for the ton of extra work involved. It's hunters like yourself who shit on other hunters for doing things differently than they do that gives the community a bad wrap. Numbers are declining as they are and dude's like yourself aren't helping. It's absolutely pathetic. I genuinely feel bad for guys who hunt the same spots year in and year out and don't or can't find mature bucks. But you don't see me going around attempting to degrade or accuse others. If anything I try to help. If you don't like the way I hunt so be it, keep it moving. Guys with your attitude disgust me. Sorry guys, I'm just not seeing the issue here. How can there be a tree that can take a stand and not a saddle? How was the saddle and platform any different than standing on a tree stand with a harness tethered to the tree? I don't use a saddle, I use a homemade tree seat. It's similar but there are differences. In most of the tree I hunt i can shoot 360⁰ unless limited by branches or brush. On a side note, I use a safety harness with my seat. I have two attachments to the tree.

Absolutely. John looks nothing like this in a tree - I assure you. I've personally seen him disappear and reappear effortlessly and it's scary how stealthy he is. Bow movement is minimal too. Platforms pretty much suck and make guys try to move a ton. Spinning completely around is pretty ridiculous - especially in Michigan. A ring of steps or at least one on each side is money for dealing with anything that comes behind you. No offense to the gent in this video in the saddle, but should consider much more practice at ground level IMO. You don't look comfortable.

And we all know theres many negative variables with a tree stand and if you really want too see proof and learn all you can about the saddle, tune in too John Eberhart channel and learn all you can, see i know John would be laughing on that tree you say you cant get into, he hunts many on the back side angle and i do too, but when i look at that tree i think it looked from the distance could of been hunted out one of the smaller tree around it for probably better blend in. Im also going to give valuable information on sky light situations, when you think your body his away from tree, thats why a long time ago i bought skyline camo and the latest vertigo, do the deer all they think i am is the sky and a couple branches, take this key tip too the bank, its priceless 🏹

I believe having both a stand a platform stand can be beneficial, I hunt all over sw mo, like dan said cover is cover infront behind ect. I love my saddle but there are situations I have used my old aluminum platform stand. They both have their benefits and downsides. I'm fortunate in the fact my aluminum stand weighs 4 lbs more then my saddle set up. And you do have to be extremely aware and cautious of your movements.

I hunt both and also hunt a climber when hunting the huge pines…the best shot in a saddle at that buck would be to sit into the saddle against the tree and take the shot, that’s probably even more stable than what Dan shot leaning in the tree standing up

I have no problem picking the bow over the tether and shooting both sides at I lean up against the tree ri avoid being skylit.. I will also set up on the lean side … the side he setup in sucks to work with you’re kinda falling forward.. obviously I’m smaller and more maneuverable.. but yea this is not a great depiction of a saddles ability.. Also I will completely sit and hang to lean against the tree to get off to the side of the tree… you have to just trust the tether… hang off the side with a knee against the tree or I can move ve all the way left and hang out past the tree and shoot past it.. I can let out more line or less also he clearly is uncomfortable in the saddle.. Aldo getting up against the tree is far more comfortable then hanging back off of in the entire time….. Leaning trees aren’t ideal but you can make it work..

I love Dan Infalt and his DVDs and KZbin videos I learn so much a true icon. I love tree saddle it makes my hunting experience so much more enjoyable. If your going to buy tree stand I would definitely buy his tree stand it's probably the best. I love my mini beast stick. The reason why tree saddle are popular is the quality has improved significantly. I knew about tree saddles for along time . Tree saddle are not a fad because of the quality of tree saddles made today are so much improved its only going to be become more popular.

I'm switching to a saddle this year after 25 years of tree stand and 15 years of Lone wolf hunting. I plan on getting higher and hunting larger trees. I will probably keep using my stand when I hunt my small trees and pine trees. I think both have their places. I also don't think the 360 aspect is really true nor is it necessary. I probably have shot about 75 deer and cant remember any that showed up on the opposite side that I anticipated. That's what scouting is for-to figure out where your shot will be. I see Dan's point but I bet I can master saddle hunting too. Good luck everyone.

I have been debating moving to a saddle for awhile, and I am at the point of either upgrading to a nice tree stand, like yours, or moving to a saddle, and while this video has awesome content Dan, I just can't relate to the guy saddle hunting in the video due to a variety of factors! I know a lot of guys are going to comment about how he is inexperienced, but I think it would be really interesting to have someone who is "experienced" with saddles, like individuals from the hunting public or even the guys from Tethrd to come out and really see if they can hunt in some of the trees you hunt in and vice/versa! I had some buddies switch to saddles due to the hype and light weight aspect this past season, and they all now swear by it now, but I have still been pretty skeptical!! Awesome video though Dan, keep up the great content!!

I’ve learned more about hunting from Dan I. And John E. Then any other people out there they are both legitimately full of worthwhile information. With that said I have only sat a ladder stand once in the last 15 years and love my saddles and the main reason is lower back pain which I personally have zero when in a saddle. I have sat dark to dark many times in a saddle and never have back pain. I can’t sit in a tree stand more than one hr without pain in the lower back. The back pain causes me to constantly stand, sit ,and repeat, (tons of movement) and eventually drives me out of the field and back to the truck. Although when I am sitting a stand and not in pain I stay perfectly still I can’t say the same for the saddle it undeniably promotes extra movement constantly looking around and readjusting for comfort because a saddle still can get to be uncomfortable on knees or hips but never the back for me. Knee and hip pain won’t force me out of the tree like my back will. I could have saddle hunted in any tree from the video with the exception of the bushy cedar Dan is spot on with that a smaller hole for a stand would no doubt work better in that situation which is exactly why I plan to buy a beast stand these scenarios do come up from time to time and I want to be ready when they do. As for fiddle factor setting up, absolutely more with the saddle. I end up using a pack frame style back pack for carry sticks and gear long distances and in the end of set up there is a larger pack in the tree then I prefer. I believe attaching sticks and a smaller pack to a stand would be comfortable to carry long distances and ends up being less in the tree once set. This is not a problem for short hikes with the saddle where i I either carry sticks in hand or over should with-a strap and take a smaller pack. Back to the bushy cedar tree in a tree like that on a short evening sit I would set up on the front side and sit side saddle with one hip to the tree and face on coming deer problem solved but not super comfortable for extended hunts. As for trends, fads, and hype I do believe the saddle craze will phase out for many and Dan will sell a million stand it ain’t all unicorns and rainbows with saddle either. Much respect Dan for all you do I try to sell your stand to all my buddies who don’t suffer from back pain. Stay cool my friend.

There really shouldn't be any body arguing about the video. It was done simply to answer the question of "why don't Dan use a saddle" A lot of people said I should have searched and found an expert such as the tethered guys, or Eberhart, Or maybe Dave Toms.... However, the viewers are not experts, and how many years does a guy need to practice to be able to use a saddle? I think Dave represents an average guy who has been using a saddle a couple seasons... Did not need an expert because it was really about looking at the issues that I have with saddle hunting. In the video we agreeg, both a saddle guy and a stand guy could of shot that buck (as long as the saddle guy has practiced. So some claim they can get into any one of the trees in question... And shoot... I have a hard time believing the issues I have would not effect a saddle hunter at least slightly more negative than me. Remember, this is about how "Dan hunts" and where "Dan hunts". I have to think there is an advantage of being in a stand, I can easily, smoothly and quickly shoot all around most of the trees. I think there is a definite advantage to having a seat, bigger platform, and harness behind and above. The only true advantage in my scenario is weight and size for packing. But, my stand is less than 7 pounds, my sticks are 2... How light do you need? And, I would rather haul a 30 pound stand a mile on my back, if it gave me a 1/2 percent advantage... To me, its about effectively killing deer, not getting busted by deer bedded 75 yards from your tree screwing with crap and about upping the chances of success... Some people its about having fun, less weight, gadgets, and for others its about the secure feeling of being tetherd to the tree. I get that. Again... For me its about killing deer, and being in the best possible position to do that... Not once did I say saddle hunting was wrong, or bad, or even that you would kill more deer out of a stand... Simply stated, for me, my set ups, the way I hunt, its not upping my odds, at best I can make it work, almost as good... For certain reasons, saddle hunting might be for YOU... Me showing people why its not for me, should help people make that decision and think about if my issues are their issues, and if some things are more important than others... Take it for what it is, an opportunity to evaluate the way I set up, and how I approach hunting and why I choose the equipment I do, rather than melting like a snowflake cause "Dan" said a saddle is not for him...

Im with Dan. 55:07 was right on the money!!...you know why?...cuz it happened to me on Oct 5th. I was in a triple basswood in a saddle BEHIND a preset stand in case they had already spotted me previously in the stand. Mature buck came straight at me and when he hit the 5 yd mark, i literally had the bow held up in the air above my head waiting to see if he went right or left. A staredown ensued and I ended up shaking so bad my left foot was quivering on my peg and I was moving the tree so much my tether excess began swinging and he busted out. Had I been in the stand....dead beast!!

I use a saddle but mainly because it's more comfortable and feels safer to me. Just tell them Dan makes treestands so Dan uses the treestands he makes because he knows they are well built and top of the line. If I was to go back to treestand hunting I would buy yours. No need to explain yourself to random people on the internet that probably just buy the newest gadgets and never hunt.

Great topic. I love the hype, advertising, enthusiasm that saddles & platforms- aiders, one-stick etc... It's fun. Hit it hard for 2 seasons, for me, saddle requires too much movement. With the sticks you need to get high enough, a saddle doesn't save much weight packing in. I still use the saddle in certain situations, & love it in combination with my lone wolf climber. Also disagree that a saddle is safer, any weak link or mistake you make in the dark with your tether, bridge, ropeman etc... could mean you fall backwards straight down. With my lone wolf climber & harness (I now use the saddle as a climbing harness), I can even climb past limbs, you are always connected and have the harness, the top half of the climber, the bottom half of the climber- not likely all three will fail. I've been climbing and hunting over 40 years, also had a saddle over 20 years ago, tried it & thought it was ridiculous- but with the renewed hype, I bought the Tethrd Mantis and don't regret it.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoaoYnmujLVnmqc lol i like tree stands and know they have their uses but the saddle example reminded me of one of those infomercials. it did have me talking to myself out loud lol You dont have to stand out like a sore thumb. 1- you can lean against the tree the same as you can in a stand. 2- you can add a few steps (not your normal climbing steps) a ring of steps for example but just 1 or 2) to allow you to sidestep around the tree using the tree for cover or to get a shot. 3- you can make your bridge longer to allow you to turn around while leaning. 4- if you use a decent size platform you can add more slack in your tether if standing to allow you to turn around while standing.

I’d also like to add that it was around 230 bucks for a saddle and 8 wild edge stepps vs a 300 dollar hang on stand plus 4 beast sticks for 100 bucks a pop. I’m not arguing about your products being bad because I highly doubt they are bad. They’re definitely worth that money, but I’m not paying that much for equipment that isn’t as packable as my current saddle set up. There’s pluses and minuses to both.

Myself, my tether would have been lower on the tree. Also shorter tether length. On this shot you can bury your left knee into the tree lean into a shortened bridge for rigidity. And take the shot. It is a bit of movement but not hard at all to get the bow to the other side of the tree for the shot. This is done early on when the deer is still coming out of the thicket. This would be my approach anyway.

Tree Diapers Suck I hadda salesman try to talk me into one at the Harrisburg PA hunting show in the 90's. I couldn't spin around if the deer changed direction. It takes way more movement with the diaper. They're a fad as far as I'm concerned. 🤮

Dan, on the first example, I'm curious as to why you had your bow on the right side of the tree to start? If you are right handed and facing the tree, wouldn't you have it hung on the left side of the tree, so you grab it with your left hand?

A couple things that bugged me with the saddle comparison is that some of those extreme trees you’d could’ve still used a saddle. And the part where you talk about being sky lit, a nice thing about a saddle is you can rotate around the tree and put the tree between you and the deer from more angles than a stand. Plus you can still stand on a saddle platform like a hang on. I think where a mobile stand shines is in areas where there are a lot of branches on one tree, especially pines. I think people should have both in their arsenal, because both tactics have their strengths. One is simply not all around better than the other.
