THIS information from Dan Infalt has been THE single most important part of my deer hunting education in the past 20 years. Most of my hunting career was based on what I learned as a teenager from my dad and uncles. But they never hunted near water, so this wasn't part of their experience. For them, it was ALL about the rut or food. As an adult public land river bottoms is all I hunt. Two years ago The Hunting Beast taught me about how deer use water for isolation, and it was an absolute game changer. Huge wetland areas I'd ignored for decades suddenly becamse my target, and I've confirmed every single thing Dan discusses here and elsewhere. Just how far into water - including swimming - bucks will go to find solitude continues to blow my mind. When you think it's too deep and too remote...it's probably perfect!

i wanted to give you a nod of thanks.. i have never found a shed or a head in the woods .. after watching your videos and learning so much about deer and the way they move threw the woods and edges.. i found my first shed .. a small 4 point , it was n a small spruce tree.. looked like he went to rub and popped it.. so i went out today and found my first dead head.... a nice 8 point, nothing huge but OMG... i was so excited... i forgot to check the ribs and see if it was a shot deer or something else... i would have never checked the locations i found them in if i hadnt watched you and the hunting public thanks for the knowledge you have passed along...

"It has to be pre-scouted". I took my buddy back into the cattails and alders on opening day one year based on a satellite picture that showed a trail cut through the mess. Turns out it was a creeping trickle of water that cut that "trail", not a human with a machete. We walked in an hour to the "trail" and then fumbled through horseshit to get to our stand location. He heard a mature buck stomping back and forth off that point and I didn't hear nor see a thing all night posted up over a big communal scrape. The walk out in the dark was far, far worse than the walk in.

I have succeeded with no prior scouting... But, odds are far greater if you know exactly what your getting into, how close you can get, and about where you need to be.

Live in the South and I got some friends that will tell you straight up. If your not going through knee deep water you might as well stay home and these cats shoot some big ass deer. Most people wont trudge through the stuff to get back there, he shot one laying down on a root bed next to the edge of the swamp paddled almost right up on them.

I really love your stuff man,especially coming from a giy who has cut his teeth hunting public land consisting of 75% swamp land.Now watching your videos I'm starting to realize I've missed ALOT of great spots.However a quick question for you...what is the best way to hunt these spots without spooking deer? I mean roughly? Can I set up on the ground or should I always be 15 ft in a tree? Morning vs Night???I know you touched on it but any help would be great!
@thehuntingbeast4 жыл бұрын
Outside of the rut evenings are much better than mornings. I prefer a tree, but you have to play the cards your dealt. Sometimes you have to hunt off the ground.

Which side of the river do the deer prefer to bed on for the wind? If the wind is coming out of the west would they be on the west side with the wind to their back and looking East out over the river? Or would they be on the east side looking East? Ty I love the videos.
@thehuntingbeast3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the cover... Oxbows often work best with bucks smelling the land bridge and watching across the river, bet I have seen occasions when the watch the land bridge and smell across the river. Along the river common bedding can have river to back with vision looking away, or back can be to an obstacle like a fallen tree while watching over the river... They always watch down wind.

I think that was around 1992... an opening weekend bow buck. I shot my 1st bear the day before getting that buck. I found it in an oxbow glassing in the summer in a very remote area. Shot him over a scrape mid day when the rain stopped.

Here's another.A grate uncle of mine had this,what i called the cherry bowl swamp.Its had a 8 or 10 foot ridge around most of it.This dates back in the family a100yrs.Thing is it had a spot where there was sink hole-quicksand.Well it scard most of the family,but grate uncle Ervin told me where it was with some history of throwing a frig a horse and other things.lol.So it freaked ppl out.I shit out not the BIGGEST BUCKS IN THE COUNTY where in this rare swamp for these parts of Mi.I had a old pare off fireman boots.My dad a volunteer back in the day.I would walk that swamp ALL DAY.I would take a step,I would here splash, splash.They were like 30, 40yrds away.Never once did i ever see one of those bucks,walking in that swamp.But it NEVER stopped me to do it again.Oh,that swamp?Its was a 4 or 5 cirlce.Them buck would never leave it,just keep going in circles✌

Took the guidance from this video and scouted a big public marsh today. Its surround by public timber and ag fields. Found a lot of individual beds but no rubs on any trees. Is that normal or did I find doe beds?
@thehuntingbeast4 жыл бұрын
Its always nice to find rubs, they are solid evidence that bucks bed there. But, the lack of rubs does not mean bucks don't bed there... In areas with low numbers of big bucks and a lack of competition we find a lot less bedding than in areas of high buck populations.
