Fantastic video! The Horses of Matheran are a vanishing breed and the commercialization of Matheran (influx of Autorickshaws and substitution of Mud roads with Concrete Paver Blocks) is spewing the death knell of horses and horsemen. What has served Matheran for almost 150 years, is sought to be undone by powerful commercial vested interests , which include politicians, hotel owners, Shopkeepers, Paver Block Manufacturers, Contractors and License-holders of Handpulled Rickshaws.

the pony horses refered are not actually ponies the breed is known ad bhimthadi horse , in the early ages these horses were big upto 58 inches in height , but after independence thses horses where neglect by many hence there size got smaller , due no proper diet , breed and knowledge of the breed . they are till refer to as ponies or khechar (mules ) because of lack of knowlegde , if u come across Dhangari people of Maharashtra u will see those horses having relatively better height compared to others , this is a proud breed of Maharashtra . Quick history of bhimthadi horse is this breed was developed during Chatrapati Shivaji maharajas time and was used to outsmart Arabian horses which are till date conisdered the best horse in the world , bhimthadi horses drank the water of yamuna river which we can hear in our state song jai jai Maharashtra majha . But now u see the breed with such history in battle are now mere beast of burden , and todays date hardly anyone recognises them . Its my humble request to everyone that whenever u see this breed please atleast recognise them and proudly call them bhimthadi horses , learn about them cuz they have been a huge part of our swaraj dream and culture . and the normal horses are mostly marwadi breed, pure breed as well as mixes with other breeds like sindhi and kathiyawadi . all of them them being the breeds of india , lets learn and be proud of them
