Can you explain to me the context of song? I'm intrigued.
@whisper53272 жыл бұрын
@@flowerbloom5782 The song is about a young mother's unexpected pregnancy. She initially contempts the baby, due to the unwelcome changes it brings. Eventually she realises her love for the child. Tar Baby is a tale where the villain Br'er Fox built a tar doll to capture the Br'er Rabbit. The rabbit was offended by the doll "ignoring" him so he starts hitting the doll, causing him to get sucked further and further into the tar. It's a metaphor of how the mother's contempt of her child hurts herself, as their fates are intrinsically tied together. "Tar baby" is also a slur for black people. When Sade was four, her English mother broke up with her Nigerian father and moved to Essex. Being a white single mother to a "tar baby" in the 60s, she was probably subjected to a lot of discrimination and abuse.

This is one of my favorite Sade songs and now I know why. For me, the song is about truth and lies. The world of lies is much, much bigger than the world of truth but they can't exist without truth. So all the lies ends up connecting to the world of truth - like a tar baby. Some lies also contain time and following the true time on Earth with life and sun light is like a golden thread.

It's interesting how differently I define the part about "How could her girl be so naive?" now at age 49 versus listening to it at age 10 when it came out. When I was 10 I took it as the grandma wagging her finger and being criticizing of the mother. Now at almost 50 I hear the grandmother mourning the inherent sadness and struggles her grandbaby will have to endure. I know it's not a perfect definition of Sade's intentions lyrically by far but it does strike me how differently I process this beautiful song 40 years later.

This reminds me of a record I used to have that would always skip in a specific spot, and I would be weirded out when I heard the song elsewhere and it didn't skip. I keep expecting some of these words to loop 5 times like in the Macintosh Plus version, but they don't, and that's somehow weirder than if it had been messed up.
