'Sadhana Panchakam' is a Sanskrit poem written by Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya (Hindu Vedic sage and a master of Advaita Vedanta or Non-dualism). It contains 5 profound verses (40 instructions) dealing with spiritual practices that are essential for the realization of the highest Truth. Through these 5 simple looking verses, the great guru lovingly lists the ways and means, which can readily be followed by all students of Vedanta seeking direct experience of the Divine, beyond the mind, the Spring of Consciousness. Any seeker who sincerely follows these pointers will surely not miss one's way and wander into the labyrinth of futile, self-defeating, negative arguments and false conclusions. Adi Shankara's Sadhana Panchakam shows the great path to Truth, the Path that was trodden by the innumerable Masters of the Vedas and the Upanishads.

About Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya:
Sri Adi Shankaracharya or Adi Shankara was a great sage, and a master of Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism). Considered to be an incarnation of Lord Siva, he was born in Kalady, Kerala (India) and in his short life span of 32 years, his accomplishments seem a marvel even today, with our modern conveyances and other facilities.
The very fact that Hinduism is still a dynamic and all-encompassing religion stands as ample testimony to the deeds of Adi Shankara. Apart from being the propounder of Advaita Vedanta, one of his invaluable contributions towards Hinduism was the reordering and restructuring of the ancient Sannyasa order. Jagadguru Adi Shankara is considered to be the ideal Sannyasi. It is commonly accepted that he lived in 8th century though there are historical sources which indicate that he lived in a much earlier period.
Sri Adi Shankara composed 72 devotional and meditative hymns like Soundarya Lahari, Sivananda Lahari, Nirvana Shatakam, Maneesha Panchakam. He also wrote 18 commentaries on the major scriptural texts including the Brahma Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita and 12 major Upanishads. He also authored 23 books on the fundamentals of the Advaita Vedanta system which expound the principles of the non-dual Brahman. These include Viveka-Chudamani, Atma Bodha, Vaakya Vritti, Upadesa Sahasri, among others.

Sadhana Panchakam derives its name from the five verses that comprise the poem, each one dealing with spiritual practices. Each verse contains 8 instructions, making a total of 40 instructions. In spite of their brevity, they are remarkable for their deep insight to reveal the very essence of Sadhana at every stage of one’s spiritual growth.
The instructions are considered to be very precious and priceless, and contain the principles of the practice of Sadhana. For this reason the text also goes by a second name, Upadesha Pancharatnam, meaning "Five precious gems of advice or teaching".
Further, the instructions are not in a haphazard order, but presented in a logical sequence, in the order in which they have to be practiced. They are like the stations we pass during a railway journey, each station taking us closer and closer to our destination. This sequential format of the text gives it its third name, Sopana Arohana Nyaya, which means “A Logical Climbing Ladder in Sadhana”.

Shankara was born in mother's place Piravam and when about to walk was taken to Kaaladi, both in Ernakulam District of Kerala. We know very little about him even the date of birth could be some 3 thousands years back. Mahaabhaarata war was 5561 years before christian era.
