Sadiq Khan’s ‘wretched’ Ulez scheme dubbed a ‘tax raid’

Sadiq Khan has urged the leaders of four London councils to drop their opposition to his expansion of the ultra low emission zone (Ulez).
The capital’s mayor wrote to the leaders of Bexley, Bromley, Harrow and Hillingdon councils describing their grounds for a potential legal challenge to the measure as “wholly without merit and misconceived”.

If Khan was even remotely concerned about emissions. he would ban non compliant vehicles not charge them. Paying £12.50 doesn't stop fumes coming out of exhausts. Maybe he is setting a precedent which allows people to pollute the environment as long as they can afford it. He is also using the little girl who died from asthma, as a reason to expand ULEZ. He really is despicable.

I believe that the case is this. As EVs become more numerous in the cities, road pricing (Pay per Mile) will be implemented as a revenue booster to combat loss of income from the sales of petrol and diesel. So for those who think that electric vehicles will be cheap motoring will be getting hit in the wallet just the same as drivers of internal combustion engines are today. The ULEZ camera network will be switched over at the flick of a switch and BAM, instant extra cash! Kerr-ching! 💵💵💵💵💵💵

I'm paying £630 road tax pa on my 2006 Diesal Landover plus residential parking permit plus running costs. If this ULEZ goes through I will have to pay £12-50.per day or £87-50 per week out of my pension. Which leaving nothing left for food or heat. 🤔😱

The biggest polluters over the Capital are the planes flying into and out of Heathrow. As they all pass through the ULEZ zone will the mayor be charging every aircraft? If it’s good enough for every driver passing through so it should be for airlines. He can’t have it one way. It’s all or nothing.

I think if 4000 sould are supposed to be killed in London by noxious fumes each year then the ULEZ might make sense. However, those same people will die if the emitters of such fumes are allowed to enter on payment. Thus the only logical thing would be to ban all non-electric vehicles from the ULEZ area. Mr Khan has not suggested that the money collected will in any way go towards mitigating the effects of pollution so it is merely another tax. That is disingenuous as well as being taking money under false pretences.

Labour councils are completely incompetent when it comes to transport. Our town outside London has one of the biggest trading estates in Europe and during the lockdown the Labour council turned the main dual carriageway through the town (A4) in to a bus lane. They claimed that it would reduce pollution. Traffic is now much more congested.

There is an equally ridiculous scheme in Bradford. I get charged for using my Ford Transit van if I dare go to work in the CAZ Zone. However anyone who has the luxury of owning a Lamborghini etc which pumps out over twice as much CO2 as my van is allowed to potter around in the zone all day long because it’s a private vehicle. Sadiq Khan’s, to reduce toxic air by expanding the ULEZ to greater London will not work. He doesn’t really care about toxic air quality and here is why: - He has already made the toxic air far worse since he has introduced the LTN’s which have increased the toxic air on the main roads because we are forced to use them as there are no other alternatives, especially during rush hour. The roads are now grid locked with traffic moving at walking pace and the fumes are getting denser and not dispersing. LTN’s need to be reopened as it is causing more damage than good. Among all this, the mileage in vehicles has also increased due to the fact that we are forced to go the long way round to get to the required destination - all accumulating to even more emission being emitted! Bravo Sadiq & team. - The health for pedestrians and children as they walk along these main routes to get to stations, schools, shops is deteriorating. Even the drivers inhale more fumes when we are stuck in stationary traffic. This is really aggravating and makes no sense! - Cycle Lanes: Should not be taking up an extra lane of the roads, large pavements could be divided into two for cyclists. - The introductions of 20MPH roads are also a problem because emission fumes don’t disperse quickly and the air is getting even more polluted because of the need to drive in lower gears. Sadiq’s statement: “It is to reduce toxic air pollution” is clearly not accurate and is making matters worse. The situation is getting extremely out of hand and something needs to be done to stop him from ruining our climate even more. He should resign and Londoners should vote for someone who will make London a greater and more desirable place to live in. There needs to be a more logical and strategic plan that is well thought. I hope the Labour party are aware of how this action, by one of their members, Sadiq Khan, will decimate any electoral chances they may have in London if they don't put pressure on him to spend the €300m on more effective measures instead. Such as: cleaning up TFL's bus fleet, improving the air quality at pollution black spots within the current ULEZ, improving the awful air quality within the underground network and improving traffic flow (rather than hindering traffic flow with LTN), so vehicles are not just sitting in jams spewing out fumes without going anywhere! Also he needs to to some of the harder things, such as address the current inefficiencies within the running of TFL itself.
