Great video. Earlier this year in March I stumbled across a little cockatiel in the Coles carpark I shop at. She was sitting on the car next to me and thought it was strange. When I got out of the car she hopped off and flew under my car. I figured if she was still there when I got back from shopping, I would pick up the little girl and look after her. When I got back from shopping, I picked her up and put her on the passenger seat of my car. As I was driving home, she walked across the middle console and climbed up my shirt and hopped on my shoulder. At this stage I didn't know what I was doing, and I put her in a box until the next day when I spent money on a cage. Unfortunately, in those early days, I spooked the little precious thing trying to catch her when she was flying around my living room and no longer will go on my finger. But she's such a little sweet thing. She sits on my shoulder every night and gets lots of scritches and she's just the best. I hope to get her to go on my finger again one day but if she chooses not to, that's fine. I'm going to do my best to give her the best life she can, she's a little sweetheart. What you said at the end of the video really is true, because this little sweet thing would have either got hit by a car, or eaten by a cat, and would not have survived. She's great company!

I’ve had a boy for 15+ years, it’s the equivalent to having a 2 year old child… energy overload, expensive toys, gets into everything, gotta hide to eat snacks or else he’s trying to reach in your mouth while you’re taking a bite, if you tell him “no” he does it more because you just made him mad, and then he screams if he can’t find you or if he’s not getting his way 😅

I’m still gonna get my hubby a cockatiel for Christmas and I did my research of all my lifestyles changes, house changes.. but honestly EVERY pet is expensive if you take great care of them.. I have a dog, cat and fish so far. My biggest worry is my cat and the bird. Found my avian vet, got my cage, got my toy kit from Elle and the birds here on KZbin, new pots, no live plants, books on cockatiels, print outs, money for food and chop ingredients, etc..I think I’m ready! No matter how much you prepare yourself. I spent $900 on items for my puppy when I first got her and STILL needed more things, mostly because I am a over-buyer. I say if you want a bird..get a bird but do your research you will never be truly ready same as having a baby!

Thank you for this video! This issue definitely needs to be addressed, especially during Christmas time! All animals should be researched before being bought, and birds end up being rehomed so often because of the lack of education!

I've got two little tiels since 2015/2016. They'd been on a diet of seed mix mixed with egg food (we call it "eivoer" in Dutch but I guess it's a natural protein mix) until 2018, with added vitamin drops to their water. In 2018 I found out that pellets are indeed a way healthier option, so I first went for those instead. My birbs are picky with fruits and vegetables, but I first always look up what they can and can't eat. I found out that I'd been shamefully ignorant about what to feed them for the first few years and my parents were also ignorant until I yelled at them for almost feeding my birds avocado not knowing that it's deadly for them and not caring to look it up. The birbs are healthy and happy tho, I even got compliments on it from my avian vet. So regardless of it being "yet another bird video", it is really important for people to know beforehand what they're getting themselves into if they're getting birds for pets.

9:42 This is the majority of the population. I have lost pretty much all faith in humanity at this point. Saw it first hand when I was going to an animal sanctuary in Spain almost daily for a months. A UK couple and their two children said how much they loved birds however when they entered I said you need to be careful of 1 cockatoo. This cockatoo had the worst upbringing, plucked all her chest feathers and I was the only one at the sanctuary that she would somewhat tolerate (it took 2 months for her just to take food from my hand). Very psychologically broken. Kid proceeds to feed bird by throwing food on the floor and I said please don’t try to pet her. She will bite. Kid ignores and then gets bitten and cries and tells parents “I don’t like that one it shouldn’t be here”. I’m on 30 but this is the way children are being brought up. Even my parents screwed me up but being autistic I had to navigate things myself. Don’t get me started on UK families owning birds. Went to an animal sanctuary near broxbourne and the birds were a magnitude worse than the one in Spain. Much much worse horror stories. I’ve been bit by cockatoos, macaws, African greys, etc but people have no idea and think it’s a toy. I really hate this planet….

We once rescued a tiel, who got loose from home, and she would freeze, so we took her home. We had cats, and also didn't want them to hurt the little tiel, so we put the cats far away from the parrot.(the cats are not inside the house, they never are) I started caring for her, because she was feeling lonely, and we took her to our old friend, who was an expert in all kinds of birds. She said, that if she wouldn't get company, she would pass away. So this christmas, we bought her a young 9 months old male, and they love each other. I am so proud, that I got her a parrot, because she doesn't feel lonely at all. Also, when she was struggling to accept us, I usually spent my time with her, I read books out loud, watch the tv, listen to music and dance. Since then, we grew so much, and with the male(called Zazu), they have an awesome time, and now she(called Pepper) accepts us and doesn't look at us like an enemy.❤️❤️ Thanks for your tips, and vids, we will just start our wonderful journey with Zazu. Prayers and lots of love @saeshell ❤️❤️

I love how you said you have to change your whole environment! I think it’s true for any pet, it changes your whole life to do just the bare minimum for them. And who only wants to do the bare minimum?? Also tysm for calling out the pet shops. The one I got my budgie from as a kid gave us so much info about how to care for her (I asked so many questions) and all of it was a lie to make them sound like low maintenance pets 😭 I didn’t find out the basics until later and when I told my parents they made fun of me and said it was bs because other people didn’t do it. I tried my best to improve things for her but I wish I’d known before! I’ve only pet-sitted since having her, next time I want to be sure I can care for my pet well

Thanks for the video. Sometimes people (adults) don't understand the commitment that comes with having a cockatiel. I'd like to add: - They're fragile animals, not like a dog or a cat. It's very easy to hurt them (or worse) by accident, imagine that guilt for a child, or someone who's not prepared. Imagine how that little animal can suffer. - They live for many years if they're well cared for, and it's not an animal compatible with others (you can try, but it's very risky). If in the future you want another pet that could be a predator for your birds, you'll have to wait until the bird is gone. My parents gave me one when I was 11 years old. I'm 25 now, I moved into an apartment alone, and my life revolves around keeping my cockatiel quiet and not having problems with the neighbors. Those who have cockatiels know that they're very dependent and if they lose sight of you for 2 seconds they panic and scream, they scream loudly, at least mine's like that. Animals aren't allowed here, but I couldn't leave him with my parents, if the one who gave him love and attention for 14 years was me. So I'm trying to make things work. I love my little dinosaur, but I wish my parents had made proper research. Having a bird is a responsibility that should be assumed by an adult, not a child.

I had a cockatiel when I was a kid. My brother brought him home from a friend because his friend couldn't care for him because they were moving. He was the first bird and only bird we've ever owned. I found him to be a fun and friendly companion. He would lower his head to my hand and nudge it, giving a soft chirp. That was his way of saying that I would enjoy some pets, so I would of course give him some. We had him a good two years before he sadly died. I think if I ever got another bird, a cockatiel would be one of my choices. I always remember him when I think about cockatiels even if it's been more than 30 years since he died.

My problem is that people go for birds and Reptiles when they don’t want a 10-20 year commitment to a Dog or a cat. When a lot of birds and reptiles and outlive that period. They are high maintenance animals who need a LOT more than what petco and petsmart say they do.
@sageauthor31
@sageauthor31 6 ай бұрын
YES, there is literally no such thing as a ‘low maintenance pet’ if you are caring for them correctly, there’s high maintenance pets and higher maintenance pets. This whole thing of “yeah, I wasn’t ready for the responsibility of a dog/cat so I got a bird/hamster/bunny/whatever” is SO ridiculous. And don’t even get me started on the whole “I got a small enclosure because I’m short on money right now”, like, if you can’t afford tot are care of your pet properly you shouldn’t be getting the pet!

i got animals gifts before but normally I'm ready for them. my first gift was two three year old chickens and I still have one today and she's like 7-8 years old which is old for a chicken. next gift was a puppy for Easter which was planned like 8 weeks ahead and we needed a new dog anyways. my sister got cats for her birthday and we needed farm cats. at one point there was a old hamster that need a new home and we adopted it and it was considered an early Christmas present. I got two cockatiels from someone who didn't want their cockatiels anymore and they were given to me on my birthday it took probably about a couple weeks before I could give them a bigger cage and more toys now they're happy and healthy.

I got a bird as a gift for my bday when I was 11. I can tell you the whole story but it's LONG, she got moved around alot and also was on an all seed diet. Was in a small cage, then got a bigger one from the prev owner, then she had to move out of the room and had to return to the smaller cage she got at first, the toys indeed were bells and a mirror. I still used the big cage for bringing her outside, then my dad sold it without even discussing it with me, so i just left her outside in the small cage. Later got her a bigger cage, but it still was too small. Her behavior was getting different and then she died, turned out she was sick. I did love my bird, but I never knew all these pet store reccomendations were actually BAD for the bird. She knew how to do a flip tho that was cool lmao, also knew how to OPEN HER OWN CAGE????? I couldn't agree more when you say BIRDS AREN'T GIFTS!!!! It's a living creature and it NEEDS good care just like us humans do

Great vid. Pets are a huge commitment. If you ever visit Canberra, give us a yell if you want to swing by & meet our refugee Charlie. All parrots are life long learners and explore the world destructively with their beak. If you do not have a burning desire to devote 4 hours PLUS to this small avian dinosaur EVERY DAY (365 of them in every year) do not consider getting any parrot (and yes that includes budgies)

My husband and I grew up with farms and almost every pet you could think of. We met at 13 so we got to experience eachothers pets that one or the other wouldnt have wanted on their own. My husband help sell animals at exotic fairs with his mom and met some really cool people growing up. However, with that we have seem some nasty living conditions. Nasty water is always abundantly a problem. Really I don't understand this of all the things we do as mistakes. I'm not perfect but it's seems to me any one should know to give a living thing clean water when the container is slimy. I just don't understand this being so overlooked. Now if you're a child or something and just a beginner I get the confusion about how often to clean bowels, etc. But experienced licensed breeders/exotic owners I don't understand. We check chickens water on the regular. Why isn't it the same for our other birds?

I have a question… I have an elderly cockatiel, got it from a person who had him for 7 years, they got him from an estate sale, guesting he’s at least 10… ok, I got him a huge cage, plenty of toys, and he gets lots of attention, BUT he was on an all seed diet with his former owners, and he refuses to eat the pellets. I’ve even tried to crush them and hide them in his seed, but he just won’t touch it. Matter of fact, he loves the millet and sunflower seeds most. Recently (I’ve had him now for 7 months) he’s began to eat some spinach… by some I mean he’ll take around 10 bites off a leaf. He doesn’t seem to want to even try apples or cucumbers or carrots or berries. So the question is, do you have any suggestions?

I have 4 parakeets after ten years ago I had both. I didn't know what I know now about birds. The internet wasn't like it was back in the 90s. Keets needs all the same things pretty much. My newest keet is 1 going on 15. He's hormonal all the time. I had a disco ball had to remove it. Love the video by the way. Out of the 4 keets I own one doesn't like me wants nothing to do with me. So I've been figuring out how to have her out of the cage and go back in the cage she usually likes to stay in the cage. I've had to take her cage apart. Now there in a flight cage all 4 of them. 2 females and 2 males. My youngest male is more hormonal than she is. I just spent over 50 bucks on new toys. New perches. I do need a nail trim for one of them and I'm not a pro at home to do it so need to make an appointment for the vet.

need help with my cockatiel I've done research on Budgies for years and I'm learning on Cockatiels now. I'm waiting for everything to be set and ready before I get the bird. Like the cage, once it's fully setup with the right things, once I bird proof my room, once Ive learned everything I need such as food, taming, sickness, moods, and so on. But I'm confused about something. So Budgies (from my knowledge) need about a week or two alone in the cage to understand the surroundings and you. You could rub your finger on the cage and such so they can get used to you. But is that the same with cockatiels? If so, how long do I need to wait until they're okay with their surroundings? What do I do when I first get it? And how soon should I let it out the cage so it can fly freely in my room?

this upsets me. firstly, every cockatiel is different. they all have different personalities so because you see mine being cute, doesn’t mean yours will be. secondly, female cockatiels are not known to sing ( sometimes they whistle a tune but it’s rare ) so getting impatient and only wanting your cockatiels for their ability to sing makes me mad, did you even watch this video? they’re living creatures that require 15+ years of love, enrichment and proper care. you’ve had your baby cockatiels for a month and a half and you’re already annoyed because they aren’t like the ones you see online. it takes time to bond with them, it takes time to earn their trust and they won’t start singing until they’re mature and in a loving environment.

@@saeshell Thank you for your reply. Guess i have to wait and keep providing a good environment for them. I am not annoyed with them. You got that part wrong. I love them. When i see other cockatiel singing i get impatient. i cant wait for my babies to sing. but that doesnt make my love any less for them.

I'm feeding my cockatiel a combo of simple seed (in the morning for breakfast) and wild harvest w/bird greens (for dinner). Is this okay or do you think I need to get actual veggies and fruit?
@sageauthor31
@sageauthor31 6 ай бұрын
Birds need a lot of variety, even if you are feeding them pellets (which is far healthier for them than seed) they still need lots of vegetables and little bit of fruit, so obviously it’s even more so if it’s just seed. The chop should be 80% veg and 20% fruit every day.

would you recommend for a 16 year old? my mom & dad go to work so they’ll only have a little bit of time to care for the bird. me & my 3 siblings also spend time in school for 7 hrs so would the cockatiel be okay before i come home?

People please PLEASE don't get an animal just because you saw a cute video. Not all birds will have that personality, there's a chance your bird might not like affection that much, many people once they realize their bird doesn't act like the other birds they have seen online people get bored and many people even give the animal up to a shelter.

Tried my birds on pellets for ages and it caused them issues , all birds are different so i do disagree with you on that point , my birds have a full seed diet now , fresh fruit and veg daily and occasionally a bit of millet. Vet said they are perfectly healthy and fine on full seed diet as long as they eat veggies and fruits.
@sageauthor31
@sageauthor31 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, so, that’s not a full seed diet because they get lots of vegetables and fruits lmao, the problem is when they’re on a full seed diet.

@sageauthor31

I personally wouldn’t unless your parents were their to heavily supervise very young children and would be fully and accurately caring for the bird until the child was old enough to do it themselves AND so long as you either have a plan to move out with your bird when you go to university or your parents are okay to look after it. Birds live for decades, cockatiels are on the shorter end of the lifespan spectrum and even they live for more than 15 years, so even if you got them when you were old enough to take care of them, they would very likely live into the time when you would be in post secondary school. Plus, even if you CAN take them with you to university/college, you very well might not be able to take care of them anymore because the schooling is very arduous and you might be working as well.

I have a blind cockatiel and I have other cockatiels that can see. Is it a good idea to put them in the same cadge
@thebirdmaster7
@thebirdmaster7 Жыл бұрын
I'm not a blind cockatiel expert but it kind of depends if the other cockatiels like you're blind cockatiel and it might be helpful for the bird to have a friend so it can find the food by listening to the other birds but maybe keep them separate for now and if they like each other then you could possibly put them together. and poor little bird I hope you give it a good life

I just got two cockatiels🕊 a couple weeks ago for my birthday 🎂and wanted them for a long long long time but I couldn't get any because Petco overprices $75 bird to a $400 hundred so for about two years I couldn't get it cockatiels. Until now they are two male normal grey cockatiels and it came from someone I know who didn't want there cocktails anymore. I almost got three but they kept one because he or she was a bully👺 to the other two so when I got them they had bald heads one of them had a bald belly and a bloody wing🤕 that one recovered faster than the other. the other started feeling a little sick I think it's because I gave up water from a metal tap bad idea so I changed the water and I think there starting to feel a little better

I’m super late but I’m very glad you didn’t get them from a chain pet store, the animals are by far the worst thing for sale at those places. They almost always come from breeding mills where the animals are just made to have as many babies as possible their whole lives and they’re kept in horrible conditions so the animals often come with illnesses, plus it’s just supporting that horrible industry. Not to mention that the chain pet stores have horrible husbandry of the animals, enclosure that are too small and overcrowded with animals, not nearly enough enrichment, and the animals aren’t let out enough or socialized at all.

90% of the things in this video i have never done and i have had so many birds... Avian vets do not even exist in my country and we have SO MANY BIRDS, i think more people have birds than dogs. The family that i took my cockatiel take care of dosens of em, really a generational thing, and they only feed them with seeds and a fruit here and there. They said their live on average of 15+ years and are healthy on said diet.

how so? this video explains why cockatiels are NOT 'easy or beginner' pets as they have frequently been labelled as. if i can encourage people to do their research instead of impulsively purchasing a pet because they "saw a cute video online" then my goal is complete.
