I have never worked on any part of a lorry in my life - I'm a marine engineer and they don't float well. However... My standard dodge with a screw puller and a properly stuck bearing/flange/whatever is to strike the head of the puller drive screw, that puts a shock load directly through the axis of shaft/bearing on the line of pull and gets you a little bit of movement. Keep nipping up and striking until it comes easy. Nine times out of ten it works every time. (Apologies if you are well aware and just not keen to wallop a borrowed tool :) )

Hi Chris mate, get a 3 leg puller with a hydraulic jack. An engineering company will make you one. We used all the time . The center screw one have their limitations. I would have tried to gently heat the hub outer and let the heat transfer to the bearing/shaft.
@iivaridark6850
@iivaridark6850 9 ай бұрын
Someone told me one has to heat/cool down at least 3 times so the expansion/contraction will remove the rust bond. And then find the right time to pull it off, because if the center is still hot and outer part has alrerady cooled down, the pressure might be still directed inwards towards the axle... But I don't know, I might be wrong...

You're right the heat expansion crunches the rust crystals inbetween the two parts.@@iivaridark6850

oh that job brings back memories, SAF axles are massive head ache, here in new they are expensive, tools are pricey, parts are hard to find to repair them. just crap. i find it very hard to believe that those brakes have never been touched, we would replace linings every 12 months on the trailers we dealt with. many times gas was used to help remove hubs.

I lost a good friend and fitter whom lost his life changing a stubborn puncture on a bus on the motorway and swung his Mel hammer and misjudged and took the jack out instead. Be safe mate. I bought a porta power after that controlled removal and with the shock of a hammer too I know a trailer is different but it just takes cutting corners and pressures of work etc just to get the job done I worked with a guy whom wouldn't borrow you anything but he would give you it but you had to buy him a brand new one. Think the lesson was don't do a job if you ain't got the tools... Hence why I have a garage full of tools

As someone who has experienced this common SAF, issue, I feel for you. Give me a BPW over SAF any day of the week. You were 100% right when you mentioned the old ROR stuff. Drum off in ten minutes. All that rust and corrosion show how effective those hub caps are. Let's hope some trailer buyers watch this video and wake up. The BPW bearing arrangement ,where they can be stripped, cleaned, inspected and re-greased is miles ahead. The only benefit of this bearing setup is where there are no skilled people to do the job and adjust the bearing correctly. Thanks Chris.

How do you need to be skilled to adjust bpw hub nut?
@raycollington4310
@raycollington4310 7 ай бұрын
@@marksquire6356 Some of the ROR or Meritor staff didn't have an adjustment spacer between the two tapered roller bearings. I've lost count of the fitters I've seen adjust the correct bearing clearance with the inner nut and have no idea that when they tightened the outer nut, the clearance went from free play to preload. I once worked for a large fleet that started having trailer hubs come off through bearing failure. The investigation found over tight bearings as the cause. SAF was specified to overcome this issue, then the problems really started.
@marksquire6356

@@raycollington4310 Never seen an adjustment spacer on RoR or Meritor which axle you talking about? Ran TM,LM &LMCs far better than Saf or Bpw in my opinion, best one now I think Merc Dca's (Jost) get no bother from them.
@raycollington4310
@raycollington4310 7 ай бұрын
@@marksquire6356 As I retired a while ago, please bear with me. The Meritor axle that required no adjustment was I think the TE. I saw the issue as often the trailer was treated as the poor cousin and didn't always get the most skilled maintenance. I do know that operating at maximum weights and given how some drivers would drag the tables sideways on tight turns, any pre-load on the bearings was best avoided. I also recall some replacement bearings doing the rounds that had no manufacturers name on them and appeared to be of poor quality. It's certainly no joke when a few hub/wheel assemblies start coming off. I really felt for the struggler on getting these SAF bearings off. Happy days

Pure hell Chris. The taper effect of the bearing means the puller actually makes the inner shell pinch the Shaft and tightens on the shaft. A good heating and a bucket of cold water something helps!
