Dora and Prince look like 'old acquaintances' now, in that they are comfortable with each other, comfortable enough for each to cruise around doing his, and her, own thing in the company of the other. No being worried, no tension, no fear. Just relaxed. Very nice to see.

Joel, you are right!! I have a dog that would get testy with other dogs and I now have a dog that can have other dogs stay with us! All because of your videos! She knows I am the one that dictates things and if she thinks otherwise, we can do this all day! 😁 I also called a trainer that I didn't know was positive only, and she said she doesn't work with dogs that need behavior modification. They know they can't help in these situations. We are all thankful for your guidance as dogs with reactivity should not be ignored or put down. I have also used your leash and walking techniques and my dog is amazing. I cannot thank you enough.

Fantastic methods!! If you have any footage of Dora meeting your trainers and the fence meetings, that would also be super helpful! You are the reason I took in a pitbull off the street 6 months ago! I had him meet my easy-to-meet Golden Retriever first and then I had him meet my dog-reactive other pitbull Charlie with Charlie on a Gentle Leader head harness. I do have a fenced-in garden area I'm excited to use for meeting neighbor dogs. You are such an inspiration🐾❤️

Honestly this looks even better than really active play, that can get rough too and you have to be on guard to see when it gets too much, but with this chill behaviour the person can relax too. It's truly beautiful to see.

Hey Joel! Love this video! I adopted a 95% blind American bulldog in June. The most gentlest creature I've ever had in my life. He gets along perfect with my cats and my three littles (dogs under 10 lbs) and loves every person he meets. He's very skittish and till he realizes it's safe. We just bought a house one month ago and another pitbull wondered up onto the property that was skinny and full of ticks. I ended up finding the owners and we are keeping him. He is a 10-year-old Pitbull. Again he is also probably one of the sweetest dogs I've ever had. He doesn't pay any attention to the dogs on the other side of the fence and he tried to introduce them. I'm not concerned that he will hurt any of my animals but Gunner, my blind baby, can't pick up on any cues from him and barrels into him and wants to be his best friend and he outweighs them by almost 15 lb. We're doing the fence introductions. We don't leave them alone. But eventually I would love for them to be able to swim and do all those things together on our property. Thinking of investing in a trainer that can help me. Any ideas?

This is what we did with Chip. We were told "Pit bull mix. Very dog aggressive by breed." so we took it SUPER slow (for us.) We have neighbor dogs so, on leashes, we would slooowly bring them together to make sure there were no warning signs. We don't have fences or anything but we took it REALLY slow. And then it comes to pass that Chip isn't dog aggressive at all. Found that out when he pulled me over one day and ran and played with an escaped neighbor dog. Now they're the best of friends, he doesn't pull me off my feet anymore, and we don't worry about his dog aggression. It's all about common sense.

I wish I saw more videos with smaller dogs because I have an unsocialized dachshund and am having trouble relating to all these “big dog” videos. I would’ve introduced my dog to new dogs during the critical socialization period if the vet had told me how important it is to socialize your puppy when you get them. Instead, I was told to keep him away from other dogs and people due to the chance of him getting sick and dying. The chance of a puppy dying that way is way less than dogs being put down for aggression due to lack of socialization. I did a lot of research, but I didn’t know about the critical socialization period until I started becoming a dog trainer myself. My dachshund is always super fearful of other dogs and is so quick to lunge. He’s never bitten another dog, but he lunges and goes to bite without biting. It’s scary to watch and I’ve been working with him on this for a while, but I haven’t been able to successfully introduce him to another dog without him freaking out and lunging. He has doggy friends, but it’s few and far between and I wasn’t there to see how my sitter introduced him to those dogs. I usually do a walk where the dogs start one in front and one behind (lots of distance between,) then slowly bring them closer using treats, commands, and just watching body language. My dog will be very playful and want to meet and play with the other dog, but the second that dog gets too close, he gets super freaked out and lunges. I haven’t seen a video that shows exactly how my dog behaves. These kinds of situations seem unique and not everything works for every dog. Obviously, if he lunges, I give a “ah ah” (correction) and always reward him for anything he does that is desirable; sniffing, looking at and not barking, walking closer in a friendly manner, curving, etc. but again, it’ll look good up until he starts sniffing the other dogs face. He gets spooked and lunges. I am terrified of him biting another dog or vice versa. He’s never done it, but it always looks like he will. Socializing unsocialized dogs is risky and scary, but I love my dog and I know he loves playing with other dogs. Working through this with him is a journey that I just have to go through with him and I want to succeed.

I think I am in the same boat as you with my chihuahua/dachshund mixed dog. He only gets along with my husky and two cats but that’s because they were here before him and he’s met them as a puppy. With people, he’s eh with. Recently we got a stray and after not finding his owners we decided to keep him but my chweenie is not making that so easy. Everyone is saying to let the dogs loose together and if they duke it out to just let them because “that’s just what dogs do” but I cant do that and let my chweenie hurt the maltipoo stray we found. If you’ve seen any videos with small dogs like ours please lmk😭

I have a 4 year old GSD male who is incredibly reactive to dogs, people, etc. It's because of me; he bonded super hard with me to the point where I believe he resource guards me. He has anxiety meds because behavioral correction has only worked so well. I've trained every dog I've ever had since I was a child, but he has been a challenge. Last night, I got a 4 month old GSD male because I had the space, time, and love to give. His foster got him from a bad situation, and he needed a place to go. My older male CAN be with other dogs once he gets to know them. He was actually staying with friends who have two bigger GSDs for a few months during a crazy move a while back. So I know it's very doable. I'm introducing them slowly through a partially open door with leashes, correcting (as much as I can) any bad behavior. It's slow going, but I'm very determined to make this work. My question is- are there potential negatives to using this partially open door method for introduction? I don't have a fence, I live in a wooded area with lots of space. Puppy is currently hanging in my daughter's room and that's the door we're using for introduction. I'm holding my big guy back and letting the pup come out, so it doesn't feel like my guy is rushing in and "invading territory" so to speak. The barking is magnificently loud. Some lunging from both as they try to get at the other, but mostly because they seem to be cursing at each other in dog. I'll be introducing them properly tomorrow with my big guy muzzled. Little pupper likes to jump up, but he's only 20 something pounds, versus my 85 pound 4 year old. I can't wait for them to be best friends and I know they will be. I just want to make this as least traumatizing as possible for both.

Hi Joel I’ve been binge watching your videos. My situation is I have a 5 year old female spayed Great Pyrenees MIA, 4 year old male neutered Great Pyrenees CHASE…a bonded pair…and a 14 year old deaf jack Russell mix. All has been fine….now we found a male Siberian husky (approx 1-2 yrs old) had him a couple days….located his owner and returned him. 4 weeks later the owner asked us to take him…we obliged. We call him Luke. We have had Luke since mid October. He had not been vetted ever so he has now had his shots, been treated for Lyme disease and been neutered. In November we noticed him bumping into things and fences etc. He is blind. Currently Luke is separated by a chain link fence from the other dogs. I want them to all be able to be together. I have had my male Pyrenees and Luke together recently and that has gone ok but we have not left them unsupervised. My issue is my female pry is very protective of me and jealous. When one dog starts barking/growling/jumping then it’s a 3 dog brawl. These are all very strong dogs. I want to have them all be in /out of home together running, playing, etc. currently Luke is in garage at night and in backyard during day. Is this something you could help with?

I know you asked him but personally unless they’re 100% and fully proofed with all triggers I wouldn’t leave them unsupervised. In a home setting that’d just mean baby gates or crate training. I've not noticed you using slip leashes for leash reactivity... what are do you think of them as a tool?

I’ve used it w my dog. After two walks with it and commands such as GOOD BOY or LEAVE IT and a few treats for good behavior, my dog walks right beside me and is even getting better when passing other dogs. I do recommend using a clip to attach the slip lead to the regular collar just for that extra security since the slip lead needs to sit high up on the neck.

If people are mad at you, they got more than 10 screws loose in their brain. You’re great at what you do. I just watched one video you explained it so easily its repetition.

My son is coming to visit with his new dog. We have one crate. Should my dog be in the crate or his dog? My dog is the reactive/aggressive one. However, the dogs will meeting for the first time in my dog's territory. Just wondering if that matters.

My dog barks at any dog behind a fence or on a leash, however, if they are both off leash and without barriers he is fine. What is that behaviour?

I really could have used the scene like the first time this dog was introduced to another dog how she was aggressive and how it was handled specifically that would have been great to see that because that's what I'm about to have to deal with

Hey Joel! New to your channel. I have found a 4-5 year old Husky I found on the street. I have 3 male dogs, pit husky mix, and one german shepard husky mix, i tried to introduce one of my dogs through leashes. My male dog turned to let her sniff ajd she grabbed onto him and ripped his skin off his leg. I have kept them all seperated but am so afraid to have them meet. I live out in the country. I dont have a fence or gate. She has bit me as well but the first day i found her. Its been a week and a half wince ive got her. She is a sweet sweet dog and has the most love for me. Im so lost on what to do. Please help.

I have watched many of your videos and have a question. I have very high active 10 month dog and all he does is want to play when off leash and I am having trouble recalling him when he’s distracted. Should I just stay the course of your recall training or should I start using a low use E-collar to help with recalling?

Stay the course. He’s young, the brain is going through a lot. Wait on the ecollar for a bit

When a dog doesn’t like the reach over head from people or dogs (like you mentioned with Dora) - can you train that behavior out or if not how do you handle it?

Actually you should never go over a dog's head. Always under the chin first.

on a different note: in-front-dogs: might they not like walking on your side/behind you because then the human blocks a big part of the view and the scent of the human (so close by) is too strong? just a thought

I wish dogs could really speak as things change so fast. Our boy who has had a best friend for 8 mo is now getting into scuffles no major harm but it just isn't nice and we don't really know what's causing the problem all the sudden but originally we did the fence meeting for days then on muzzle and leash then muzzle only and that worked very well when he had no other dog friends due to him being to aggressive/reactive that were males.

Does this tactic apply to correcting an older dog who’s mean mugging/growling at a new puppy through a gate/crate?

I’m in this position right now !!! 6 year old lab/ German shepherd and a 10month old lab. The puppy doesn’t mind but the older one growls/ wants to bite through a gate.

Just about to happen in my house. My son’s friend (as instructed by my wife) is bringing his dog round. Our dog is highly reactive, I have said all of this and no one is listening. I trained my dog on various behaviours. But they are bringing this other dog straight into the house. And they think it’s a good idea!!!

Hi Joel! My dog gets LOCKED IN when he sees an u-neutured male, puppy, or a small animal he can chase. I can't break his concentration, recently I found canned air to deter animals. It works to break his concentration, but I'm not sure if it's a good training tool. What are your thoughts?
@lucianacoutinho4484
@lucianacoutinho4484 2 жыл бұрын
You must use canned air immediately to mark the behavior, só you have to be ready all time. That's why clap and yell are easier tô mark behavior, it's easy and fast. Oherwise it would be worst.

My 10 year old nephew used to kick my dog and now whenever he raises his voice at us or we raise his voice at him she goes to attack his legs. Sometimes it just occurs randomly. He lives with us and it happens maybe 5 times a week. What should I do about it?

I'm generally leaning toward positive reinforcement, but I found it takes a looong time to shape a behavior while dogs have a lot of behaviors to be worked on. So I always thought, "With positive reinforcement, my dogs will never be completely well-behaved the rest of their life." So, realistically, corrective actions like what you preach is more realistic. I mean, most dog parents also work, have family, need rest, etc etc. So, if corrective actions are faster without damaging my two pups, I'd go with them. For example, my labrador puppy is highly reactive when meeting other dogs and that made me almost impossible to share social life with him. For him, I prefer corrective actions even with yanking his collar. Some humans I know can't even change their behavior with positive reinforcements method, I wouldn't put a higher standard to my two pups.
