I have a friend who's a police officer in Ouro Preto. He told me the only thing they worry about is drunk college students doing dumb things. One of the best universities in Brazil is in Ouro Preto. It's kinda crazy over there but they usually stay away from the historical center. I'm from Belo Horizonte and the road to Ouro Preto the most beautiful road I've ever seen in my life. Sometimes I just drive there to spend the day and come back home at night

It is the largest engineering university in Brazil. I love the mountains and the sharp turns with a steep cliff right to your side as my wife is not slowing down with the buses and trucks slowing everything down. My wife was born in Itabrito, just north of OP. We are in Brazil often and around OP every other time we go to see her family.

I was in Belo Horizonte when you were in OP last month. I love OP. You get a good workout walking around OP. You should of seen the steep incline of the hill we were on while renting an Airbnb in BH. At 2:07 - the church you showed, there was a wedding there. We had lunch across the street. The wedding had a 1935 Ford. Go about another 15 minutes towards Ouro Branco to Lavras Novas. Cool little town. Were you walking around Confins with a Georgia tee shirt on? I saw a man with a Georgia shirt when I got the BH and when I was in CNF when I left. No, when I am in BH and we go to OP, I do not want Americans there. They stick out like a sore thumb, do not understand Brazilian culture and cannot speak Portuguese. They do things that Brazilians find very odd or rude. If they cant speak Portuguese, they will have a hard time.

Ouro Preto has been on my bucket list for a while. Can you advice anyone who is traveling to Brazil for the first time and that would like to visit that town as to where would be the easiest city to arrive to coming from the US? Would you suggest just flying to Belo Horizonte and then making your way to Ouro Preto? Would Belo Horizonte be a good central base? Or are Rio and São Paolo a must?
@karatecadepijama3 жыл бұрын
Rio and São Paulo are quite far away from Ouro Preto, something like 300 miles. Fly straight to Belo Horizonte, there are flights from Miami, I'm sure. There is lots of nature around that you don't want to miss and do not miss Inhotim, an outdoor museum that takes two days to get to know. If you are a nature and scenery person you will enjoy very much. Lots of local food and country stuff to see.
@simonledoux85193 жыл бұрын
@@karatecadepijama Thank you Ike for your reply. I already have my flight booked to Rio so I will need to fly to Belo Horizonte. I was interested too to go to Florianopolis for two reasons. One was that it is considered a very safe city and the other is that they have a few language schools. But I will be going in May so the weather might not be so good and there might not be enough to do there. I may just take a class in Rio for a week and then do some traveling the rest of the time. Belo Horizonte and the area sounds good. Ouro Preto looks fantastic and just the type of city that I love with the colonial architecture. Thank you for your suggestions.
@karatecadepijama3 жыл бұрын
@@simonledoux8519 almost every place in Brazil is quite safe if you don't mess around the wrong stuff. There is lots to see in Florianópolis, you could spend an whole year over there and not see it all. Santa Catarina state is a very interesting place to see anyway...there is lots os small German colonized villages around and marvelous beaches like Bombinhas and Balneário Camboriú. If you like beaches I advise you to go either to northeast or upper São Paulo coast. Do not leave Paraty away of consideration for a visit because it is quite interesting and close to Rio. Don't spend your whole time in Rio otherwise you will miss it all. Buses are quite comfortable and cheap between cities and very reliable and you may see nature between this touristic sites. Avoid Manaus and Amazon region in your first trip.
@mikeandresen1316 Жыл бұрын
A very accurate description. One aspect not mentioned is that nights in old town can be dominated by the university students. They can be quite rowdy but is quite a safe town with lots of colonial history without the glitz of other bigger cities and the food is excellent. I can confirm the up and down of the cobblestoned and often narrow streets that can be a test of your driving skills.

I think one can't take pictures inside the churches because the exposure to flashlight damages the golden layer that covers the ceilings, walls etc. In other museums such as the Imperial Museum of Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro) pictures are also prohibited
@vkanthems67443 жыл бұрын
Its exactly because of that.
@frednich96033 жыл бұрын
I understand that in the old days, but today you would think that a simple no flash photography rule would take care of that
@ulutiu3 жыл бұрын
If golden layer you mentioned is indeed made of gold (leaf), then there's no problem. It is the other colors that may be problematic in particular yellow, oranges reds and violets.
@JoaoSantos-xy8gi3 жыл бұрын
@@ulutiu thank you for your clarification! I don't understand anything about this topic

Minas gerais is amazing state. I went to Brazil last year and it was great . But Brazil,russian and usa are big countries. People dont speak Portuguese in usa , we don't expect that Brazilians speak English. The country was colonized by portuese . People in the world has this strange way to think that that wolrd needs to speak English. Usa is big with big states and they don't speak french , Italian etc . Its natural. The same in Brazil states bigger than countries. The language is Portuguese. In Europe with small countries they need to learn other languages because of the size of the coutries . They have lots os opportunities to learn another language. Russian is like Brazil,china is like Brazil. Big countries.
@paulovinicius50012 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately many museums in Brazil are like that - no photos allowed. It defeats most of the purpose of any visit. I was born in Brazil and have seen that since I was a kid. Thankfully the US and Europe are so much better at managing museums.

No and it would impossible to install a funicular, the streets are so narrow and the brazilian law prohibit changing the layout of historical cities. They moved Minas Gerais' capital from Ouro Preto to Belo Horizonte because Ouro Preto became too small for the modern 19th-20th century.
