Adventure Riders head back to complete a part of the Canning Stock Route after failing to complete it the year before due to a major breakdown. They thought they knew what they were in for. They didn’t. Looks like they’ll have to have another crack at it another time to finish the job. Also included in the Vid are some tips n tricks for those new to Adventure Riding. Grab ya gear; lets go!

I’ve watched just about all of your vids, Steve, and as a 66 yr old DR and KLR rider from South Africa, I must say this is one of your best: hallmark understatement, beautiful and appropriate motif music tracks, stunning drone shots, and those badass mash tracks you use to underpin your self-ironising humor - you’ve made my day ‘bru! And about to set out in a few days time on my own next desert-riding-seasonal jaunt across the arid hinterland on the DR ... Love your work, man!

Hi The Ruffian KJ, it get tough the older you get lol. I keep getting drawn back to our Outback. I just love the harsh beauty of it. I’m sure SAfrica and our mainland Australia were joined once millions of years ago. The landscapes (and geology) have so much in common. We are blessed to be able to experience it in a way that others can only dream of. Glad you like the vid. Thanks for watching. 👍🇦🇺

Another great vid of the Aussie outback, thanks for posting. Have to agree about the DR, great reliable bike for sure, sadly my 2014 don’t do adventure Kay’s just suburban stuff around Melbourne but it has just clocked over 280,000 and only pulled apart once to replace the gearbox output shaft, but the thing is so cheap to rebuild anyway may as well keep it. That red sand is messy stuff, you can always tell a vehicle from WA, it has that red tinge on everything. 👍👍👍👍👍

Another wonderful production mate. Was hoping you would get some aerial views of the tight tracks on the CSR when the terrain beats me up I don’t feel like taking too much footage either. Safety first always and if it does not feel right you peel off but you were sooo close. Hi Tony Rdr, I’m led to believe it does get easier south of Well 5 but I did not want to take the chance. We were both knackered and had made poor time. I have been LOVING your adventures. I always wanted to visit Australia (the Outback, particularly) but have left it too late into doddering older age. But you allow me to see what I have been missing! THANK YOU!!! Incidentally, a couple of times you have said "we need to drive off road far enough to camp so that no-one can see our fire." Are there worries out there of personal safety from your fellow man? I am just curious. I suppose "people approaching whom you don't know" in the middle of nowhere at 3am . . . it's not really a warm feeling. ---Mike

Hi ADwTLaPC, Australia is a very safe place to travel. We prefer to get far enough off the road to prevent detection, particularly if I am on my own or just a very small group. Some of the areas we travel are only frequented by local inhabitants of small, remote Communities and we don’t like surprises in the middle of the night like you have suggested. It becomes less important when group size increases in numbers. Glad you enjoy the Channel content. New content out shortly. Thanks for watching.

I would also be interested in a video sharing with us what you pack and take on your adventures :)
@mongreldogproductions
@mongreldogproductions 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, most Riders here in Oz would change the fuel tank, modify the suspension, change the seat, fit a suitable luggage system, and fit a screen of some type. Other Riders might swap out the pegs for pivot pegs, lower the pegs (to improve the ergonomics), modify the carby (jet and air box mod), grind down the header weld (Exhaust), replace the standard exhaust. I haven't done all these mods and quite frankly, where do you stop. A $10,000 bike can end up costing thousands more. Start with small steps and make those changes you think are necessary. As far as a packing list goes it would depend on how remote i go and whether i'm in a small group or on my own. Have a look at KZbin for ideas...there are a number of Riders with suggestions on what to take and what not to take. Good luck. Enjoy the ride.

1st vid I've seen from Mongrel Dog Productions. What an adventure. Dream of mine to do CSR. Good insight on road conditions and camp possibilities. Wonder how a difficulty rating would come out if put to wider rider forum. Let's say...Little Dessert, Big Dessert, Simpson crossing and Canning crossing and what else we wanna throw into the (how did an earlier comment describe it) predator hat.
@mongreldogproductions
@mongreldogproductions 3 жыл бұрын
Hi MV, ya gotta be careful with comparisons...one rider might tell you its easy and another might say it bloody difficult. My experience is that once a rider has completed a ride, the conditions are 'underestimated' because he has completed it (if that makes sense). I nearly died in the Outback in 2017 because a rider told me that, "yeah, its not that bad". I was to find out later that the track was a lot more difficult than anticipated. Glad you like the vid. Thanks for watching.

Could you please expand on why you decided to finish when you did, as you looked OK to me ? Do you do any extra training prior to a trip to increase your general level of fitness or is being bike fit enough? Is there a video in your prepping for one of these trips? Hi RF, believe me, i knew the only option was to exit when we did. I may look good on the exterior, but i'm like a duck on the water. I look calm above the surface but there is a whole lot goin' on under the waterline. Without being disrespectful, you can only travel as fast or as well as your slowest player. I could tell that Chris was suffering the effects of fatigue (as was I...I am in tune with what is going on inside my body and mind). It was remote, help could have been days away and if we needed assistance it would have turned ugly. Fatigue is not to be treated lightly. When it no longer remains enjoyable, you have to question why you are out there....to get it wrong can have serious consequences. My general fitness is where it should be...I cycle most days but both of us are in our 60's. I am 62 and Chris is 66. Age can play a part. You dont wanna find yourself in a position where you need to make decisions quickly or without consideration of the possible consequences. The Canning will be be out there for some time to come. We might go back to finish the job but in the comfort of our 4WD's. Fuel, water and other considerations come with experience. Some of these trip are months in the planning. Thanks for your interest in the Vid. Thanks for watching.

Hi Kevin, thanks for your interest in the Vid. I wear what i can afford....Adv Riding gear can be VERY costly. I don't wear any 'Brand' names and usually are not too fussy when it comes to the right gear. I do wear a Leatt turtle suit under my gear which provides chest protection...I remove the armour in the jacket. My boots and helmet are O'Neil and the gloves and pants are DriRider. The DR650 has all the usual mods to make it suitable for long distance Adv Touring. There are a number of Vids on KZbin on bike setup (and gear) from numerous people but each of them would differ slightly. My advice; take small steps and see what works for you personally. It will take a while before you stumble across what suits your individual needs. Hope you like the vid. Thanks for watching.

The DR like the KLR are cost effective choices, for ADV bikes but, the DR has a weak gear in the gearbox, and the KLR the dreaded Doohickey balancer lever, but good solutions in the aftermarket for both, I have a KLR Gen2.

@mongreldogproductions 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mal62, yeah although the weak link (output seal) on the DR is now fixed during the production of the bike (since 2013). The seal use to leak around 30,000km but a retaining plate could be fitted post production. I think the gear (3rd) you mention is because that gear shaft was always working in each gear (although I’m not a technical kinda guy). Thanks for watching. Hope you like the vid.

Hi SMcL, not those mods but the other usual ones. Suspension upgrade, large tank, after market seat, racks, lowered pegs, pivot pegz. Mine has done about 50,000 km and I have the confidence in it to keep going for a while longer. Hope you like the vid. Thanks for watching.

Hey Steve, just interested to know what specific reasons led you to cut short and off the CSR, or was it a combination of a lot of many things? I saw a couple of offs, they can certainly be unnerving. Be very interested to hear about the decision making process. Cheers.
@mongreldogproductions
@mongreldogproductions 3 жыл бұрын
Hi IATPMOA, simple really (but not a decision that was taken lightly). I expected a return trip to Wiluna to take two nights and so packed accordingly (food wise with a little more 'just in case'). The first night was spent in a bush camp before we hit Well 9. We left Well 9 about 1.00pm. We had 62 km to get to Well 6 where i knew there was good water. The going was tough. Sand that was just deep enough to rattle you...about 100mm (4 inches) deep. That keeps the bike unstable unless you are standing up, leaning back and applying constant throttle. Most times you are just a passenger and not in control. The bike will decide where it wants to go. You wrestle with it most of the way. That becomes physically tiring. There were some deep washouts that prevented us to continue (that was my 'off' when i knew i would not be able to get out of the washout at the other end. We ended up getting the bike out of the washout but we then had to continue riding in the bush off the track. When this happens there is a high chance of staking the front (or rear) tyre(s). Our overall average speed was not very fast. It was over 30 degrees Celcius. We arrived at Well 6 (remember 62km) around 5.20pm. We had a further 200km to go to get to the main road leading to Wiluna. The following day was no better. Chris had an off and could not stand up his bike (too heavy) and i returned to assist. It was not the first time he had an off (Chris is a very good rider) and standing the bikes up saps your energy. We needed to rest a couple of times as we continued South. It took us about 2 hours to travel 19 km to Well 5. We were already making mistakes and it was still early in the day. We had nothing to prove and we were unsure of the conditions further South....we think they improved but were not prepared to take that chance. We exited at Well 5 and have no regrets about the decision. Nobody died and we did not need backup or rescuing. I am 62 yo and Chris is 66. We learnt something about ourselves (time to give twin track the flick). Winner, Winner. I hope that answers your question. Hope you liked the vid. Thanks for watching.

Canning Stock Route seen on the map seems easy and small... No doubt, I miss Australia! And the Australian humour! like this" hey mate, your bike decided to take a nap? Hi Bob, I knew this vid was gunna be longer than most...and I also know that some viewers would be lost because of it. It is a fine line between maintaining interest and losing the audience. I even deleted some stuff from this vid to try and reduce its overall length., I don't think 'Part 1 and Part 2' vids are successful...I've tried that in the past. I just have to find that happy medium. I continue to evolve and are always striving to do better each time. Hi Mark, Chris and I have nothing to prove....once it no longer becomes enjoyable then it is time to pull the pin. We may have been able to continue but the decision to exit at Well 5 was not a difficult one. I never want to become a headline or be responsible for having to be rescued. Well 5 is the destination for Desert Raid 2021 (i'm not sure where you're located) so if younger blokes want to take on the Canning Stock Route they are welcome to it. JP (on the Africa Twin) approached from the South but turned around before Well 2A due to the conditions Thanks for watching.

@@mongreldogproductions I hear ya Steve. If it's not fun it makes the going so much harder. I'm in Victoria so I'm kinda stuck at the minute which is how I'm finding time to be watching KZbin. I no longer have a bike setup for Adventure riding either. I have developed an interest in the old MX and Enduro bikes from the 70's and early 80's but I am getting the urge for another ADV bike. I sold the R1200GS a few years ago as I couldn't find the time to ride it. I'm 55 so I'm not exactly young. I am thinking of an Africa Twin as a new stead but after watching how tricky conditions can get I'm re-assessing that idea.

hi from Canada, when I travel in northern Canada I am bear aware. Australia presents different wildlife challenges, I never see any mention of snakes or other bitey critters (at least at the 12 minute mark). what sort of precautions do you take for wildlife?
@mongreldogproductions
@mongreldogproductions 3 жыл бұрын
Hi har dlyworkun, wildlife? Precautions? None. We do have saltwater crocs up in northern Australia that will take you if you are near water. Snakes are more scared of us then we are of them. They hibernate in winter and once they feel vibration in the ground they scamper. As long as you don’t stand on them they won’t ‘attack’ you. We avoid ants nests when setting up camp (the big ones can hurt). If you camp near freshwater you can expect mosquitos. Our lizards, goannas, feral camels, kangaroos are all pretty harmless as long as they are not cornered. Dingoes will attack if in a pack but that is most unusual. You won’t find them in packs in the desert. We DO have some man eaters in our Oceans. Hope you like the vid. Thanks for watching.

Hi Mike, Sometimes, in the remote Outback, there can be a problem with alcoholism and the local communities. Without being considered prejudice, we need to get far enough off the road so we don't get any surprises during the night from some travelers doing a 'grog run' after payday. Alcohol is banned in a lot of the Communities and if we have beer, and they can smell it, then it could cause conflict. Not everybody in the Outback has good intentions. Have you seen the movie 'Wolf Creek'? Scary and spooky. Thanks for watching.
