First film of 2019! Just a bit of fun, trying out a different camera and a faster edit computer. No prizes for lighting and focus here. Or the colour balance for that matter. Or the audio. Mustn’t forget that.
It was much too cold for time consuming setups, and I just wanted to get cracking.
As it’s all pretty self explanatory there’s no commentary on this one, I’ve added a few captions instead.
In spite of my best efforts, my garage is often a bit cluttered and perhaps not ideally suited to welding, grinding and blow-lamping.
In this film I marginally improve workshop safety by fitting a CO2 fire extinguisher. I realise I could have just hammered a nail in the wall, but there’s much less fun in that.
You’ll see me make a plywood backboard board from some scraps of an old packing case, make an anti-swing bracket from polyphenylene ether engineering plastic and make an overly elaborate aluminium hanging boss. The horrible noises from my mini mill were telling me I was pushing my luck running a 20mm cutter with 40mm depth of cut.
Trying to turn a roughly spherical end has moved a ball turner project further up the to-do list. But it’s a long list, and I doubt I’ll have one by this time next year…
Towards the end of making the boss I’d machined myself into a corner and could no longer grip the part I’d made. A tight fitting ABS plastic sleeve came to the rescue for the final drilling and tapping operation.
Sometimes the best Christmas presents are the things you’ve been promising yourself, but never actually got around to buying. Cheers Ben.

Fantastic video again; the project was a bit underwhelming but the machining was excellent. In many ways I'd say you're up there with ThisOldTony and I can't wait to see more.

Hi nice to be here, new to your channel, subscribed, liked the efforts applied to the fire extinguisher as just mounted one in an enclosure in our finishing area, so that made watching you building one even better. Thank you for the share, Lance & Patrick.

Very nice vids and a sense of humour unfortunately not very common on YT! Personally I dig the "recycling outta the scrap bin" philoshophy, which I apply both at work and home, though operational my projects never look as nice as yours. Now - would you like to comment on your CJ18A compound angle mod please? - I haven't seen it before/ figured that out yet. Yup- got myself an Amadeal lathe - still straightening out some of its production issues almost two years later. Keep up the good work and Cheers from DIYSwede

Could have just put a hook in the wall but ohhh no... you had to make a thing of simplistic beauty! 😉👍

Good to see a UK based machinist. I'd also recommend getting a fire extinguisher ball and putting them near or above any highly flammable materials in your workshop. I do a lot of stuff in my utility room and i'm always paranoid something will set on fire. Have an extinguishers by the door and also one of those balls above my PLA filament

Wow - just wow :-D You are up there with This Old Tony when it comes to shooting entertaining videos (and you have quite a few techniques to demonstrate - good stuff!). I had no idea you were making a bracket for the fire extinguisher until the last scene. Great! :-)

You've definitely got great production value, and your videos are good enough that it seems as though you've been fairly big on YT for a while! I will say that in general, some things could be shortened a bit but that's about it. CO2 fire extinguishers are expensive, so I got my pair of 30 pound (dunno what that is in your superior system of measurement) used fire extinguishers on ebay for $300 total. They're way bigger though, so not as easy to move around.

Ha ha. Love that. How do find woodworking with metalworking? I love both but the dust from the wood is annoying and can’t be great for the machines.

Great fire extinguisher holder. Some have commented about wasted effort for a fire extinguisher holder, but I think not. First, it's good practice. Second, and most important, when you sweat the small stuff, the big stuff gets easier. Only one request, please ditch the repetitious background music. It's helpful to hear the sound of the machines at different work loads so I don't want to mute. The music adds nothing to the content.
