The only place to go from here, cost-wise, is one of those old-timey straight razors you can sharpen on a leather strop! I imagine those do, eventually, wear out though. Also, you need brass balls to use one of those on the back of your head :D

They do look neat, but I would much rather have a clean smooth shave. with no burning nicking or irritation. Thanks for recommending the dorco 6 +. I’m definitely gonna try that. I’m currently using the Gillette fusion pro glide. It’s good but expensive. They are like $40 for 12 razors at Walmart. And now Harry’s razors are out and you can get 12 for $22 bucks. So anyways love the videos and keep it up.

Here's a tip when shaving the back and sides of your head: Have a fixed mirror on your bathroom wall and use another handheld mirror in one hand. Then use your dominant hand to shave your head with the razor. You get to see and control exactly where you're shaving. Trust me, it works!

One pro tip: you should use brush and soap when using a DE. I found that it helps a ton more than just lathering up shaving gel/cream with hands. Apparently the science is that the brush makes a much more rich/thick lather that lifts impurities and the fine hairs up for closest shave possible. Plus it makes the blade glide easier

Just be sure to buy a fixed angle one for the first DE. His mistake with the first one was to buy an adjustable one. It can be too aggressive if you do not adjust it. I use an Edwin Jagger IEGSR GEORGIAN I am 38 and let me say I have never ever had such comfortable shave before. I prefer rapira razors. Keep in mind you also have to find the razor that fits you, just try different ones. Some are can be too sharp, if you dont have too thick (what ever to shave) dont go for too sharp ones as they dont give the most comfortable shave usually.

I've been shaving my head with Slant DE for the last 7 years. I've never so much as nicked the skin with it. It's all about practice and technique. Also the blades can be so different it's hard to imagine. I'm a Blue Astra blade user because it's sharp but somehow smooth at the same time but everyone's skin will be different. No irritation and 100 blades cost about £14! That will easily last me a year. At a push I can get 5 face shaves and 1 head shave from each blade but I change more regularly. The reason I started DE shaving was to reduce the terrible irritation and ingrown hairs. That has all gone. I recommend this method to everybody but many people don't like the learning curve that comes with it. Take your time, invest in a decent razor and it will pay for itself in no time.

I'm a huge proponent of safety razors. Ive always used the butterfly type (you twist the bottom and the head opens up like a butterflys wings). My dad always used them as far as I can remember. I remember when I bought my first one (still the same one to this day ). I bought it for around $40-50. I remember my dad asking to see it and he picked it up and went "oOoOO. This is good. It's got weight." I also bought a bunch of blades too and gave him half. He didn't like them. He kept cutting himself because they were too sharp and he was a stubborn guy. He was using drug store blades for like 45 plus years and he was just used to those much duller blades. He passed away last year. I've kept his 2 safety razors he had for years that he got when he visited his family in Poland. I'm going to need to start shaving my head for the first time come summer. And the plan is to his older safety razors for my head. Tip though. If you are having irritation issues, use a good hair conditioner instead of your shaving stuff. Not a watery conditioner. Something good and more natural. That will solve it

Since lockdown began last year March I started shaving my head myself (previously use to have it done weekly at the barber) with a cartridge shaver and always ended up with cuts. A month in & I discovered my grandfather's Wilkinson DE razor in the cabinet & decided to give it a go. Since then, I've been using a DE razor & its important to use good quality blades.

I worked in a high end mens shave shop. These razors are also great for legs too (ladies, looking at you but I am also a bald woman). People are afraid of cutting themselves because of the blade, or they feel they NEED 5 blades. You don't. One good, sharp blade will do a much better job. It's also better because you're not throwing out plastic cartridges or entire razors every few days. You can check antique stores for fun and retro safety razors (obviously disinfect before use). I personally use my husbands great grandfather's razor from the early 1900's, and sometimes I use a straight razor on my legs too. A good shave soap will make all the difference as well. Using a brush to apply the soap is a good may to get the hair to stand up so it's easier for he razor to catch it and you'll have less irritation. Plus it's just a fun way to pamper yourself!

I know it’s been about 2 years since you posted this, but as a woman who has started to shave her head…I have questions!!! I am having issues finding a shaving soap that I like. The first ones I bought were too manly, so I found the Stirling brand with women focused scents. However, I found the ones that I bought (Evie, Witchy Woman) to be too perfumy. I have bought a few scents from West Coast Shaving, but I haven’t received them yet (Cherry, Lime, Citrus, Peach). I am hoping that I will like how those smell. I don’t want a very complex scent as I wear perfume, and I don’t want the smells to clash. I am also having issues with my lathering. It dries out on my head and I am getting razor burn really bad. I think part of it is the razor itself. I bought a Henson A13, and I have to press down to get it to cut anything. I have ordered a Rockwell 6s and a sample blade pack, so I am hoping that will make a difference. I think the biggest issues right now are the razor burn, bad lathering technique, and trouble finding a soap that I like. Sorry for the long comment!!
@KnifeCrazzzzy
@KnifeCrazzzzy 4 жыл бұрын
Tips: You need to make sure to keep pressure light only the weight of the razor, make sure lather is slick, invest in good razor, soap, shave brush, and good blades. There are many razors and blades some good and some terrible and you may have to do some trial and error before finding the right razor and blade combo. Also you need a balm after. If your having only slight irritation then you may like a menthol shaving cream I recommend Margaritas in the Arctic by Stirling. Big one as well is cold water rinse to help close pores and help irritation. Aloe gel and an alum block will help irritation and heal cuts fast. -An avid wet-shaver

I use a variety of razors, the DE razor is a good razor, I use the merkur, however, I use it to get the thick hair off, if you have a lumpy head and cysts, be careful, the DE safety razor can be unforgiving to these issues and if you are not careful, slice and cut your head. I personally think the battery cartridge are the best for a head shave, especially like you said. If you are in a rush.. It is a great finisher for that perfect shaved head and very forgiving, this is of course, only my personal opinion and what works for me..

I've been shaving my head a month now and recently got a DE Safety razor and I love it. My first advice is not to force a switch on yourself unless it's what you want and don't be ashamed to want to shave faster. I kind of like the slowness of the DE, it's like meditation for me in a way. My only advice is to slow down even a little more and maybe try stretching the skin (hard with wet skin and soaps and stuff) so it doesn't bunch up as you're running that blade across. That said thanks for everything and for helping me embrace my baldness!

The old-fashioned steel safety razor is best. The blade sits perfectly aligned and stays secure. Don't buy cheap plastic ones or some that are sold in supermarkets. I bought some old ones made in the early to mid 1960s (totally fixed and cleaned). I bought one from 1960 and another from 1966. Both Gillette. Unbelievable quality. Old but real gems. Keep in mind that they differ as to their cutting depending on their design. Some are considered mild while others are not. Also, the blades you buy can vary greatly in sharpness. So, experiment with the blades, and I'd recommend shaving with the grain, at least at the start. They may be called "Safety razors" but they are easier to nick yourself with. Cheers! PS: The old Gillette safety razors had date codes on them. They are found in the top left and right corners on the underside of razor guards, for both the 3 piece and the 1 piece models. The letter represents the year, and the numbers 1 to 4 correspond with the quarter of the year. For example, my oldest one has an F and a 4. So, 1960 and the fourth quarter of that year.

Keep in mind, DE is the best shave you're going to get, However there's so many variables that come into it, what a good shave for me might be shit for you and vice versa. The razor itself has a different angle per brand/model so those Astra's you're using could be more harsh in say a Merkur 34C than the Wilkinson sword you're using. My recommendation for you is to buy a Edwin Jagger DE89 (Made in Sheffield). It's the perfect razor for the beginner/veteran, you'll learn the correct angle, the weight of a proper DE razor and it's very mild in terms of blade exposure. If you truly want the best shave I'd go for Edwin Jagger DE89, Feather Razor blades, and shaving soap/cream that you lather yourself using a badger brush, this isn't some gimmicky shit, trust me, once you use these, you'll see and understand why DE is so much more superior, You forgot the most important part of DE shaving, The protection we use in Soaps/Creams we lather ourselves. This is really one of those things you have to go all out on. Hope all goes well. Adam.

Honestly the good blades are actually cheaper on Amazon. $8.00 for a hundred.

Really helpful tutorial Harry, just wish it was a out before my second (strangely my first was fine) attempt at shaving with a safety razor, managed to cut myself more times than I would care to admit, I think I was pressing down slightly on the razor though so that is to be expected 😂 Keep up the great content, your added real value to the ever growing community!!

Astra greens are a good blade choice. The low end razors can be OK but something with more weight is better. There's lots of great DE razors on the market now even compared to a few years ago. The Razorock Mamba is a recent purchase and is among the best DE head shavers I've used. It's a titanium/stainless steel combo.

Please please please try the Rockwell C6 adjustable safety razor, it is one of the smoothest razors out there. You can keep it on a mild setting until you can work your way to a more aggressive level, the head is adjustable. Also, Voskhod blades are known for their seriously smooth shave. Best of luck on the DE razor journey :)

You don't need to make repetitive strokes with a DE razor. I make one clean stroke from the top of the head all the way to the back. After one pass, lather up and do it again.

DEs are the best razors there are, for head and beard, period It takes some time to get used to the handling and the weight but once you're good at it, nothing comes even close to the shave you get from them. In addition to that they are the cheapest and most environmental friendly way to shave. Just bought one and NEVER going back to cartridges or electric.

I highly recommend using Gillette Nacet blades. I think you are still putting too much pressure going up--hence the "weepers". I would suggest using a synthetic brush and as I remember you were using TOBS cream....use that and lather w the brush....then go home w the razor (no pressure).. Try doing longer strokes.... If you insist on using non lather cream, TraderJoes has some good stuff.

Hey, I’m no expert with a safety razor, but I’m pretty damn close to being one with a straight razor....I’ve used a straight razor exclusively on my face for 5 years now and it’s been a year since I nicked myself, anyway I too am making the switch to safety razor for my head...now what I have found from my straight razor knowledge is if u use a slanted bar safety razor and actually use a thin coat of Cremo shave butter rather than caking it on it will work wonders...the slanted bar safety razors get superbly closer than a straight bar ones with literally any blade due to the fact that it acts in the same manner as how a guillotine works (not to sound morbid and all lol) as opposed to having even weight distribution across the whole blade ...what this does is during an entire pass the razor will continuously be cutting the hairs down closer and closer to the skin as they pass, unlike a straight blade that merely hacks hairs off evenly....the end result is you can take your time more and still be done shaving in roughly the same amount of time as a cartridge razor shave......also a tip, try getting a nice hot shower for about 10 minutes FIRST and then shave your head with the shave butter and safety razor...then u have a mirror to see what u are doing, and your skin will be nice and soft from the shower, I know this helped me tremendously with the safety razor head shave

I want to make the switch also. Right now I'm using Gillette fusion cartridges and they're so good! With or against the grain, shave cream or no shave cream. It gives a nice shave without cutting me or irritation. So it's kinda hard to give that up. But I gotta at least try. Just to see for myself what it's like. I won't get this model handle though. And I'll stay far away from the blades that come with it

Just had my first double razor shave today for the same reasons. I hate waste. I like to save. I went with a wilkinson all metal one thats normally sold at the grocery stores for me. I didnt like the blades as it wasn't as close as I thought it would be with the grain, probably not the worst choice though cause as a first timer, I was able to go against the grain on my face and head and only walked away with a couple niks. They were pimples and it wasnt that bad. I'll probably give my shick to my gf. I need a oil to apply before the cream and a good moisturizer then I'll be satisfied.

I get ton of cuts with safety razors 5:42 and it just takes longer. A dab of Bronner's and about 5 minutes while showering, I'm done. Including my face. Every once in a while I go back to the safety razor because I feel like I'm missing something but no, I'm not. Sure its cheaper to use a DE razor but it takes longer and the result is really the same
