I work in a jewelry store and my manager gave me a great tip that I use at work but it can be applied if you are out in public. If someone is talking to you and giving the creep vibe (you think they might harm you/steal) and you CAN'T get away (ex. at work, on a bus) comment on their appearance. Say "That's a cool skull tattoo on your arm" or "I really like your short blonde hair". This will usually freak them out if they are planning something because now they know you are memorizing how they look so if you had to report them to the police you have an accurate description of them.

I wanted to add a couple more safety things I do: I look in the back seat before I get into my car. Don't open the garage door until you are in the car with it locked. Watch your garage door go down in your mirrors and don't unlock and get out until it is closed all the way. If I'm coming home to an empty house even if everything looks ok from the outside I call someone to stay on the line while I walk in and check it out. LOCK your doors when you're pumping gas and don't get gas when it is dark out, even if its early morning. Gas up when your tank is half-full so you don't get caught on empty at an unsafe time. More safety: If there is an intruder in your house or you are being attacked and you have 911 on the line shout out any identifying features. One of the safety apps I have is called circle of 6 where you save six contacts and with one tap it can send a message to all of them with your location if you're on a date or something and you get a weird feeling.If you're on a date and you go to the bathroom or something order a fresh drink when you come back and don't touch the one you left at the table. If you're going out with someone or you're going to their house text their full name, number, and address to a friend and let your friend know "if you don't hear from me in x time call the police". Have a code word with friends or family to signal them if an attacker makes you call them to say you're alright. Have a password with your kids for picking them up from school or off the bus. These tips won't stop all violence because a lot of the time it comes from someone you're already close to that you trust, but being vigilant could help protect you.

Rule #1 Don't listen to the politicians (liars) and police (politicians) Rule #2 Read #1 Neither talk about survival and self preservation. Being with several people does not make it safer. - There are countless examples of groups of people killed by one gunman. Never get scared when a gun is pointed at you especially for women. Being kidnapped is to a woman's advantage, but don't get handcuffed. BEING SCARED causes mental paralysis, resulting in getting handcuffed..................Kidnappers use your FEAR to their advantage, and you can turn your FEAR to your advantage. There are numerous situations where the victim was taken to a motel (through the front door) and raped................FEAR kills.

RANDOM ADD ON TIP; if you're screaming out, Scream FIRE! not Help, because people randomly scream help all the time, whereas people will hear Fire and instantly look to help :)
@kaitlynld48719 жыл бұрын
I wanted to add to the part about getting pulled over: Even if it looks like a normal cop car, especially at night and especially if you are the only two cars on the road, TURN on your hazard lights and CALL 911. Do NOT pull over until you get to a public well lit place like a gas station. Tell the dispatcher your location and any identifying info on the car if you can see it. If you can catch the license number or the number on the car itself give it to the dispatcher and when the "officer" approaches ask for their name and badge number THROUGH the window and keep your doors locked until the dispatcher confirms that your guy is legit. It is completely within your rights to do all of that and you won't get in trouble. Also, if it seems like ANY car is following you, take a few more turns than normal (but don't get lost), and do not go home or to work. If the car keeps following you take note of their license plate and the color/type and call 911. If you know where the police or fire station is, drive there and usually that will scare them off as well. If you see a drunk driver or suspicious vehicle, call 911. If someone approaches you in a parking lot saying they need help, someone is injured in their car, especially if you can't see the person do not go with them alone. Go back into the store and get back up and call 911.

Great video! Also, a creep does not always look really shady or creepy. When I was about 15 or 16, I was visiting Portland and my older sister and I were on a crowded bus and this dude- in a nice suit- asked my sister and I if we wanted to get off the bus with him. He asked about three times and every time he got more aggressive. That situation has always stuck with me. So, even if they look normal, you never know, they too might want to eat your organs.

YELL from your stomach, don't scream. It's much louder and more powerful sounding (if that makes sense) My aunt teaches self defense and she taught us to take a step back from the person advancing and put your hand out and yell something like "stop!" or "Halt!" and this indicates that you are ready to defend yourself and a make a fuss if needed but would rather not fight.

My main one is to walk on the outside of the footpath by the road not on the inside by buildings or hedges or whatever, so that if someone approaches you, you can run into the road (avoiding traffic obviously) but they cannot corner you or trap you by a building. I've travelled quite a bit and thought I was quite savvy but some of these things would have never entered my mind, like saying personal details out loud, and throwing your wallet etc. if someone asks for it bc I would always say just hand it over but that's a really good tip. I've recently moved to a new city for University which is a lot bigger than my home town so I will definitely keep these tips in mind and share them with friends.

I worked at a hotel for 3+ years and it was everything we could do to not reveal things to others. We would give them their keys and say "this is your room number if you need help getting there let us know." As far as the card numbers and the addresses people would ask us to confirm those over the phone and we would have to tell them no but that if they were comfortable they could re-read it out and I could confirm that it was correct on our end.

Another thing that I just happened to do that helped me out, while I was in Rome I went walking alone at night (not smart) and two men started to follow me. I started to speed walk, and caught up with a group of adult tourists that were all walking together. Walking by this group ended up insuring that the two men that were following me left/stopped tailing me. I stuck with this group until they were going away from the direction of my hotel, and did like you said with the familiar place and ran to the gelato shop, bought something, and then rounded the corner to my hotel.

This sounds horrible, but one of the best pieces of advise I ever received was to cause a fuss. I had a bad experience at a former gym when one of the staff members gave another member my name (and potentially other information, who knows) and he followed me out of the gym into a dark parking lot when I was alone. Once I finally got myself back together and ready to try again, I asked to speak to a manager at the new gym just to relay my concerns. By kind of planting the seed in their head early that I was concerned, it's lead the staff to kind of keep an eye on me. I'd never want to be a dick about it, but I'd much rather feel safe and secure.

I got the door guardian flip lock with 4" screws, it takes 800lbs of force to kick in a door. Also got a 6pin antibump deadbolt and night lock barrier foor French doors. Showing you see the person before an attack starts is wise. ... but after an attack starts, it could mean being killed. Gavin de Becker "The Gift Of Fear" gives the victim-selection tactics 99% use "forced teaming" aka "we are in the same boat"...refusing to hear the word NO. Don't be afraid of sounding rude. Even the Kindle sample version of that book starts off with a young lady being followed up her stairs by a serial killer, then raped and suddenly saves her own life by following her gut. My friend, 23 male, was drugged at a bar, someone slipped something in his drink while his back was turned just watching a football game (maybe when he used the restroom), and blacked out, and woke up hours later in the middle of the night covered in grass and leaves in the middle of a park a couple blocks from the bar, and his wallet had been stolen along with his phone and any other valuables on him. He went to the hospital and had a drug test done, and I can't remember what he said they found in his system, but he definitely was drugged, and it was extremely scary. Thankfully he had some other friends with him who he could call from the bar to pick him up and take to the hospital. I'm a recovering addict so I do abstain from everything now, but it chilled me to the bone, and I tell everyone this story now. It doesn't matter who you are, it is possible :( be very safe people.

Don't revolve your life around it or drive yourself crazy, but please stay alert as much as possible. And try to look out for other people too like Qcknd said, this was all extremely good advice. One thing you could do, whether you're walking, riding a bike, or driving, but I feel like it would be easier to do if you're driving. If you have a feeling someone is following you, make 4 right or left turns, go in a circle. If they are still behind you, they are most likely following you. drive/ride to the nearest police station and wait there. If you're close enough to one, I would walk there, but if you arent, walk into a safe zone like a coffee shop or a store.

Thank you so much for sharing these important tips. You never ever know when you're going to need them. I've only had one creepy encounter and even though I did some stupid things right then and there I got out completely unharmed. I was 14 years old and was on my way home by foot. It was a 20 minute walk and I was only 4-5 minutes away from home. I had noticed a man standing still on the other side of the road for a while, but didn't think much of it. Until I turned to walk into some neighbourhoods (not my own!) and the man started following me. I panicked, grabbed my phone and started acting out a fake conversation, happily talking to "a friend whose dad was a police officer". Looking back on it, it was so obvious and stupid and not believable at all, but it worked. The man sort of froze and quickly walked up another street. I got home safe. I never saw him again, but thinking about it still makes my heart jump. Please be safe out there, everyone.

i agree about the eye contact , also flashlights or the light on your phone ! if criminals will walk away from a home with a light because of the chance of being adentified you bet a flashlight will do the same
@meredithdoubleu9 жыл бұрын
+Josie Davidson girl i literally grip a small flashlight in my pocket if i'm outside and it's dark. when i walk alone i turn it on and sort of wave it around my feet so people know i have one and can shine it in their face at any moment. seriously it's the easiest thing that nobody ever thinks to carry around with them
@Ucceah8 жыл бұрын
i dont think somebody concidering to mug you will be deterred by the prospect you could shine a light at him. (even if 100+ lumen will certainly buy you a few seconds to run and make noise) if anything, waving around a flashlight will draw unneeded attention to you. at best they'll shrug it of as slightly odd, at worst it's an indicator of exploitable insecurity to exactly the wrong kind of people. still a useful item to carry, that can double as an impact weapon. (some lights have really mean, jagged "crowns" for that purpose) but combined with a pepper/CS spray it's devastatingly effective! blind the agressor, he will protect his eyes - take the light down, he will open his eyes, unable to see, and look right at you with his guard down - spray long and liberally, so he inhales a good amount. against a single attacker even with glasses this is a non-leathal instant kill! absolutely incapacitating. practice such moves and a few basic kubotan techniques so you feel confident, and a little 5" flashlight can feel like you're carring the sword of justice. ;D

I've had various stalking experiences over the years and I've come out safe each time. By luck or strategy, who knows. I've hid in peoples gardens, taken winding routes and ran when out of sight. My main suggestion is to find a main road and stand on a corner. More chance of passer by and being in the open is less appealing for an attacker. I keep pepper spray in my hand and never play music. I will look into a sound grenade though, thanks !

These helped a lot and im going to be getting a sound bomb. I have heard of a lot of these, and the van thing is so true. my mom was at walmart when my brother was a baby before i was born and she noticed a van a couple spots down from her and got an overwhelming feeling a being scared and went inside to get security and they had said they've been watching the van already and when her and security walked out the van was gone. and when i was little i was playing at a water park with some kids and my mom was watching me in the water on the steps and a lady sat down next to her and said "thats a pretty little red head, it would be a shame if someone were to take her." when she left a life guard went up to her and asked what she said to my mom and that they have been watching her all week. Police came and my mom never saw her again. I was a child and I never knew what happened until i was 18 and my mom told me the story. always pay attention.

This is a really good video, I lived in the city till I was in my mid teens. One thing I found I worked with me is I felt like a guy was creeping on me while I was heading to Starbucks. Cut across three blocks had 911 pre dialed. Keep my phone to my ear pretending I was on a call being very loud. Another thing is I had two routes to school that was supplemented by a friend of the family giving me rides. If you feel you are being followed and have no place to duck in. Make your route confusing, make it so cars can not follow you. When you get home lock the door and call some one immediately.

Would be interested to know how many people follow these tips regularly. All good tips but so easy not to follow them. Not sure if the getting in your car on opposite side to a van is necessary. The locking car doors when in is good idea. For asking for directions yes don’t follow anyone if they offer to show you but if you have a touchscreen mobile you can get directions on that which is safer still. I’ve heard the walk different routes one before and makes sense but can’t honestly say I do often but will try to.

I'm a very easily influenced individual, don't ask me why, but I am. I'm now going to be paranoid as all hell. My car is old and has minor issues, one of which being that my central locking doesn't work. But I'm very grateful of that; if i pull up at a red light and someone tries to hop in the passenger side then they will be foiled by my non working central locking. It also means that if I'm filling up my tank (flap is on same side as the driver) i can be sure that nobody is jumping in the other side without me seeing. I keep my phone in my hand when I'm walking, if there is someone giving me a creep vibe I unlock my phone so first of all it kind of looks like I'm in communication with someone and second shows that i have means of contacting police in an emergency situation. The has even been a time when i pretended to be on the phone, back in the day of slide phones, so that Mr creepo would see that if he tries to fuck me up turn someone is going to know instantly.

at airports, make sure your phone and computer are clearly marked as something you'd notice (like a case). I'm 14 and the first time I traveled alone, a guy literally grabbed my iPhone casually right in front of my eyes. I have a feeling he was going to try to "trap me", if you will. I couldn't have contacted my parents, gotten on to my flight, ect.

This is such a helpful video, I'd completely overlooked a lot of the things you mentioned! I walk the same route to uni everyday, I'll definitely be changing it up a bit now

What I do is if I am ever grabbed on the street, like someone obviously trying to hurt me or take me somewhere, I scream. I know that I'm 5'3" and 110 lbs, I can't fight back or bring a grown man down. A scream has a similar effect to the sound grenades you described, if you're on the street and you scream as loud as you can, it will be heard and noticed by someone (even if there isn't a lot of people around, if it's quiet the sound will carry), and it will throw the attacker off

I really don't even think about a lot of this stuff just because of where I live . I live in a pretty small town in Texas and me being such a nice person and really just wanting to help if someone stops to ask me for something I'm just like yes, let me help you not even thinking about how something terrible could happen . I would never make it In a big city .

The problem with these things is that these tips destroy kindness... I'm an EXTREMELY paranoid person and i'm always on edge and watching my safety, but if window washers ask if they can go to the toilet (which is in our hallway, so they wouldn't be able to see our living room) or if they can fill their bucket with water, i can't say no. I always want to be kind, but as soon as i say 'yes' i get paranoid. I'm always getting myself into situations where i'm uncomfortable, because i can't be rude... I really appreciate this video, i want to be as safe as possible. I'll remember these tips! A way i always try to keep myself safe is to not trust any stranger, always keep the worst in mind and scan your surroundings for escape ways/possible weapons if something were to happen.

It's better to be a little rude than jeopardize your life.

Some lady was laying down on the side of the road acting like she needed help. My friend thought she needed help... So as my friend pulled over to help this lady, the lady tried to jump my friend and steal her car! Freakin scary stuff.😱

This reminded me of the time I was in a superspar with my friend looking to buy 3 litre water bottles and a group of guys looked at us and could tell we were tourist and called out to me and tried to get me to go over to them. We started sprinting in the other direction to find our other friends well carrying huge jugs of water. I laugh about it now but that could have been a really bad situation.

ALSO one more thing, I was sitting in my car on my lunch, and that stalker I mentioned in the other comment found my car, and tried to stand there talking to me and tried giving me a pack of cigarettes of the same brand and particular cigarette that I smoke. It was scary as hell, and that was when I knew this wasn't just a nice guy coming in a lot. Then I found out he was talking to other people in the store to like this. So yes, please keep your doors locked and stay aware of what's going on around you. I can't say enough how right on this video is.

I've always grown up thinking about safety. When me and my friends were at the mall I would notice creepy old men in the junior isle and bring it up to my friends attention. I'm always first to be aware of my surroundings.
