Safeway employee stops shoplifter and later fired after 22 years for violating shoplifting policy

Videos of outright shoplifting have been surfacing on the internet for quite some time now. One San Mateo Safeway employee put a stop to the would-be shoplifter and was later fired by Safeway. A judge later ruled in favor of the employee. John Ramos reports

It probably has to do with the fact that the Safeway's top people budgeted in the annual budget to include shoplifting X-amount but didn't expect paying out unemployment benefits. I put in 16 years of my life at that company, and at the end of which, they basically told me to kick rocks. All because I called the cops on a shoplifter that resulted in their arrest. I was outside on my smoke break and just so happened to be sitting next to their car. They came out with a hand basket full of booze, which automatically told me they were stealing. So as I was sitting there, I turned to the car as they got in and snapped a picture of the plates. Gave it to the cops. They got caught. And I got fired for pursuing them. BS!

Even off the clock, you're always representing the company. Least that's what I always hear whenever I enter a new company. And that's why whenever you see people being blatantly rac*st in online videos, it can have backlash to the company even when it's a person being rac*st on their own time. While true in some instances, this is why having well trained asset protection officers is the best solution. In accordance with shopkeeper laws, one can absolutely cuff and detain a shoplifter until police arrive. There are several pitfalls and liabilities the company (and individual) can be opened up to if done incorrectly. Knowing when, where, and how to stop shoplifting is a job all its own.

Large companies like Safeway have set aside expecting a loss that includes shoplifting, so they fully are aware people are stealing and is incorporated into their budget. Shoplifting policies are always in place to protect the company in case the employee or the thief gets hurt in the process. Back when I worked at JCPenney, we weren't allowed to touch the shoplifters except for the loss prevention people that worked within our stores (and even they had limitations to what they could do to prevent LP from getting injured in the process).

When I worked at JCPenney, we had people coming in to return old shoes, worn shoes, expired receipts, etc. Even if customers couldn't get cash back or credit returned to their cards they would take store credit cause apparently people were selling store credit/gift cards to places that would buy gift cards/credit. My supervisors had once told me some malls have places where they do buy gift cards and that's what people were doing. I would always call my supervisors in hopes they would not approve the return but they always did. Customers were moving price tags from clearance items to non-clearance items, or a clearance item to another clearance item for a slightly cheaper price. Customers knew we had to give them the price they saw. I had to take back some items that were years old but were in "good" condition. Customer told me they were just in the trunk of her car and never worn. Though the shoes never did look worn. They just looked old from being in the heat for a long time. The receipt was extremely faded but it was a JCP receipt. Supervisors even okay'd the return. I had heard that Nordstroms has no timeframe for allowed returns and supposedly even take returns for worn items. And back then, they were on commission and I was considering working for them. But if someone returns a used item years later and it's off your commission, you suddenly wonder why you took a loss that paycheck. Pass. Long story short, customers always take advantage of the system. Companies know and set aside budget for loss. And loss is considered a lot of things. Therefore a lot is set aside for each category of loss. While it is frustrating as an employee of a company to see these negative situations take place, sometimes we just need to stay out of it. Make sure other shoppers are kept safe and move about your day.

And I know now why because I have a daughter. She wears uniform. I got a voucher this year for her school clothing that was 175. I was able to get 5 pairs of uniforms and a pair for shoes. She has grown so fast since school started she is not able to fit any of the things and I was just saying if I could return these instead of paying another 175 less, than 6 months later, life would be a little sweeter. I work for Kohls and we can't do a damn thing and it happens all day everyday, while prices rise and they just have to be treated like every other customer and they know this... Im sick of it!!! I work at McDonald's for a number of years. Before, I used to be yelled by clients, disrespected, insulted, spat on, and threw food on my face. Customers complaining about their food or goons demanding free stuff under any excuse. The company never ever appreciated my effort to avoid losses. I'm fighting with the customers all the time, they said. So, one day I decided to change my point of view. My new philosophy now on is: "Never risk yourself protecting what is not yours". I worked Security in many areas of the Bay Area. I worked Dollar Trees, Bingo Halls Durant Square, Walgreens Berkeley, Etc. The Reason why these Stores tell Guards like me don’t stop the Shoplifting your here for Robbery Suppression. What I found out why these policies exist. Insurance Companies are the Reason why Employees don’t stop thefts, insurance companies are the reason why guards allow shoplifting to happen on their watch. INSURANCE!!!! Insurance Companies don’t want to pay claims because some shoplifter with 12 Convictions files a claim alleging excessive force against the arresting security agent. Now if that shoplifters decides to commit an Armed Robbery maybe steal $700 dollars I can use deadly force to stop this act. In Conclusion California Penal Code Section 490.5 A Merchant is allowed to hire Store Detectives to prevent theft, vandalism, fraud, etc…l

So if you get hurt while attempting to stop the robbery, who is at fault? You or the company you're protecting? Who should pay the medical bills? (Don't get me wrong, I don't think Safeway should have fired her in the first place. Maybe a warning for violating policy that plenty of other large national companies have in place.)
