The logic is that the loss is less than the total cost of employees. Now that losses are increasing the math just doesn't pan out any longer. Combine that with basic greed. That small percentage used to be acceptable. In order to keep margin GROWTH, they have trimmed all the labor they could, volume is stagnant, the easiest target left is reduce loss. That last is actually an important point that I have not seen raised, JD. Imagine if the store negotiated in advance with law enforcement about how to notify them when they see a likely impending shoplifting, so that officers could already be on their way or present outside when the thief exits the building. Would that work, in your opinion? Or would that be treated by LE as a nuisance, since at the time of the first call no actual crime has yet occurred, and some shoplifters might abort their theft if the police arrival was noticed (by them or an associate outside)? Too many fruitless calls - so wait until the crime is verified before calling.

Depending on what State this CRIME is committed. In Connecticut store security can use what ever means necessary to STOP the theft and get their merchandise back
@arturocamaney92353 жыл бұрын
Wrong answer, leftist clown. In none of the fifty states do rent-a-cops (aka loss prevention, security, whatever their exact title) have the right to lay hands on you or search your possessions. See the 4th amendment if you believe otherwise. And yes, contrary to popular belief, the 4th amendment _does_ in fact apply to places of public accommodation as well since the right to be secure in your own person is a NATURAL right which cannot be taken away except through due process. So no, in CT, store security cannot use "whatever means necessary" to stop the theft. They're free to try, but they'll either get charged with battery or attacked back in self-defense. And if you think for even a _second_ that the suspected shoplifter will be charged with robbery due to choosing to defend him (or herself), think again. The woman who was strong-armed by "undercover" (aka plain clothes) loss prevention personnel at an Ikea store in St. Louis ended up having all charges dropped simply because she was grabbed by one of the rent-a-cops. So while true that responding officers and the D.A.'s Office often don't care enough to investigate such matters, there are times when they listen to both sides of the story.

Actually, the companies build it into their reports. It's pretty much industry wide that they have budgeted in for loss through internal and external loss. And their losses when you look at the numbers are like .008% per $billion. I mean $800K per billion is that percentage, if my math is correct. That's not really eating too much into their bottom line. It must be increasing though.
@zephsmith34992 жыл бұрын
@@mujin70 No, it's 0.08%, off by one decimal. But that's compared to gross sales, not to profits (sales-cost-labor-other costs). Maybe drop another decimal. Merchandise display locks can be circumvented with bolt cutters, hammers, cutting power tools, and ramset guns, and there are organized retail criminals that are smart enough to do that. To curtail organized retail crime, incorporate choke points and making the entrance doors entrance only unless there is an emergency as well as adding Public views monitors at every self checkout, the entrances, exits, and pro pickup zones. It's actually a nationwide issue. You can track building materials prices online. It appears to be Covid related. The supply lines are just now catching up.

It isn’t just boosters. I bought a Hilti drill on eBay and when it arrived it was drop shipped from Hilti direct. I went to register the brand new drill and it said it was already linked to an account. I called and worked with them to help them identify that a group was using stolen CC from companies to buy them on their account and then sell them. Hilti was nice enough to let me keep it for helping them identify the way they were doing it.

@@euphoricmonk they didn’t ask me to return it or send them money for it. It wasn’t free as I paid the scammer but Hilti would have ended up running a charge off or the actual account holder would have disputed it and Hilti was out the tools and money. Sorry for confusion

Pay off duty police officers to come and work on their days off. Do what Costco does but much better. Every person must show the receipt verifying they paid for the item prior to exiting. I don't mind if it saves me from subsidizing criminals. I guarantee you Home Depot will save money.

770k out of a billion is less than 1% why is this a story? Tax is 13% whats the big deal. The feds are skimming at a way higher rate than people stealing merchandise .

Mine as well put Gestapo at every exit ams bar codes up every ones buts. We live in America dude you dont have to turn a store into a prison. Make products cost more for more security. Just enforce the law. Punish people where they dont want to do it again
@jimziemer4743 жыл бұрын
Well, you are supposed to show the receipt (per your membership agreement). If the line is too long I just walk out. A criminal would do the same. The receipt checker is just for honest people. It wouldn’t stop a criminal.

Yall acting like this is a huge deal 8 hundred thousand for every billion in sales is like losing 80 cents for every 1000 dollars you make. These companies make billions in profit, this isn't hurting anyone.
@PeterLawton3 жыл бұрын
Those are the wrong numbers to compare. Of that $1,000 you're looking at, most is cost of goods. How much was profit (needed to pay for the wages, the building, property tax, A/C and other utilities)?

I worked at HD about 20 yrs ago. Smartest thing shoplifters did back then was carefully apply sticker barcodes over the one printed on the box. They'd grab multiple pricey lighting fixtures, hand tools, anything that wasn't locked up. The barcodes would resigster in the system as a cheaper model of what they actually grabbed (e.g., $3.50 light, instead of the actual $59.99 light fixture). Then they pick an easy target at the registers, usually a kid (who doesn't care/pay attention). I loved finding the sticker, peeling it off, and scanning the box to show them I caught them. The scammer would always feign ignorance, "Woah, that's weird. Why was that sticker on the box? It's how really how much? No, I'll just leave the cart with you. I don't want these items then". 🤨😑😆🤣
