This generation (Rafter, Kafelnikov, Guga, Ríos) was cut short for different reasons not one of them being Roger Federer nor Rafael Nadal. By 2005 all of the top class players were already retired with the exception of Carlos Moya, Mark Phillipousis and Tim Henman. This was an open window for Federer and then Nadal.
