So I've been curious about regional style for a long time now, so after the holidays we traveled to three different U.S. cities and got a makeover in the street fashion of that city. Well, I think Americans tend to call anything second-hand "thrifted".. I've definitely seen these types of vintage stores in larger UK cities (Bristol, Manchester off the top of my head, ofc London too). Their equivalent of charity shops would be Goodwill and the Salvation Army - though ofc they probably are much bigger!

I went here when I visited Portland. A lot of the stuff was second hand but with Beverly Hills prices. Most of the t-shirts I found were at least $15, ranging up to $100!!! I did also find more reasonably priced thrift stores and consignment shops.

Honestly, your experience is far more accurate to mine shopping at secondhand shops in the USA. There’s like a difference between “thrift stores” that usually curate what they’ll take from people and has slightly higher prices and certain brands, and something thats probably more similar to a charity shop, like Goodwill, which takes pretty much anything you throw their way. The only things I’ll get at the nice thrift stores are jeans bc they look nicer than Goodwill jeans 😂

Best thing you can do really for any of em is to make lots of noise as you’re hikin so they don’t approach you to begin with. They’ll try to avoid you whenever possible, even a mama will just get up and take her cubs with her. She’s mainly defensive when she feels like you’ve walked up on her. Make noise, she hears something that sounds big coming, she’d rather leave than confront.

I love this. The US can often feel…very much the same all over because of the homogenization of fashion/culture (which actually means you can find X niche in almost every city-i.e., you can find people who dress “Dallas” or “Portland” pretty much everywhere). These styles have a provenance that we often forget. Thank you for finding what is distinctive about each place!

I’m assuming none of you folks on this comment chain are on the west coast. Portland was not authentic. The Portland outfit ended up being a mishmash of all of the things that are trending on Instagram right now. I think this is mostly due to a weird blurred line that has occurred from a lot of misplaced nostalgia coming from popular shows set in other eras. It was the most “trendy” outfit, but not the most authentic to its host city. I’m not trying to be mean - just defending my old home town :) We don’t just wear jeans and flannels. WE REALLY DON’T.
