@@Kronk24 That's what I'd always thought, too. Back in the day, my visual following the group was rather sketchy, and so believe it or not, but it wasn't until 1985 that I saw the walrus moustache was off - and the thick curly hair too for that matter. I remember having been quite shocked...!

Quincy, Germany was also very fortunate to have RockPalast, which was broadcast live from the Grugahalle in Essen, where I graduated from upper secondary school, during the late 70s and early 80s, and from TV studios elsewhere. I recorded many live concerts from the Grugahalle which I still listen to today - I'm 61! The great bands performed there, and it was a magical time. Nothing compares to the 70s and 80s for the best rock music.

Their music is so damn original, it's not just simply about considering them as any music hidden behind the so called lable prog-rock, their music's atmosphere is so incredibly unique and powerful - Yet having many fans, they're far too underrated, less in terms of popularity alone, but in terms of the history of music's richness!!!
@hellmau23525 жыл бұрын
What you said is very true Thurian! I've listened to a -lot- of bands and music over the years and I can say with confidence, no other bands sounds like Saga. I was way to young when they were in their prime during the 80s (I'm 39) but I was lucky enough to see them live in my own city last year!! They are still rocking it very hard!!
@dcs0025 жыл бұрын
@@hellmau2352 There really are very few bands that have their own completely unmistakable sound. No one (Canadian anyway) will ever ask "Who's that?" while a Saga song is playing. Rush, Yes, and Queen also come to mind. This guitarist also has his own very distinct sound. He has that amazing Les Paul/P90/Marshall tone tweaked monstrously, but what makes him so unique is that he finds the power in the single notes (sustained or staccato) and melodies, not just power chords. That makes him stand out in a band that would otherwise be drowning in synths. On the Loose is my favorite song from that period, and the power he gets from just a few well-placed notes in the choruses blew me away when I heard it. (Alex Lifeson did something similar in the intro to Camera Eye.) IMO, you really need a crunchy guitar for rock, but you don't need that wall of sound that 70s bands used. If you find more creative places to play and more creative styles, man you can really rock it up. I love how they do instrumental breaks instead of solos too. No one has the spotlight in that band during a break, unless it's a special or something. They're a band with a totally unified sound. Sorry - long post, but I had some feelings to share. Peace.

My first introduction to Saga seeing this live on German TV in 1981. Big fan ever since and still are. Saw the Heads or tales tour in Amsterdam soon after this, what a great show and album!! Still love to see this, had it on audio tape and played that tape grey! Thanks for uploading this

I have been a Saga fan since I first saw them at my high school in Toronto, Nov 24, 1978 the day I turned 18 and legal to drink. I loved the show so much we saw them the next night at the Gasworks. It was kind of sad saying goodbye at the 40Th anniversary final show at the Phoenix.

9:10 Can't help but notice after seeing a fair amount of live footage of this remarkable band, Saga - How completely in touch and in-sync they are at any random moment with their audience. I really love how they all stop clapping in unison about the same time Saga slows down the tempo.

My first concert as a 14 year old was Saga with another great and underrated Canadian band FM in San Juan, Puerto Rico. What a great show! This show is more or less from that time. I believe I saw this Dortmund show on MTV or Night Flight back in the day. Saga rules!

I agree that FM was very ubder-rated! Black Noise was absolutely epic! Saw them in the round at Ontario Place Forum and they blew me away. Couldn't understand why these two bands got so overlooked. All of us Canucks should be proud.

Thank you for sharing this video. I was 19 and enjoyed the concert. It was the first time I saw Saga live and I'm still a fan today.

How this has only 70k views in about 2 1/2 years is astounding to me. Epic band and recording of a magnificent performance! Besides, this is serious business here!!! BOB!!!!

I saw Saga several times over the years, even was a"grunt" on one of their albums back in 1985 super nice and professional guys, it was so sad when Steve passed away,he was the best leftie drummer I had the honor to have met and been around, Ian is a shredder and the rest of the band are consummate musicians

Steve's alive and well. He just retired from the band. He's got an album of advanced instrumental music coming soon. I had the pleasure of recording some of my songs at his studio a few years ago.

@@alexhicks5889 Yes that's weird that Tony French claimed Steve had died. Nothing further from the truth. Good that you corrected him.

They were very "niche" in a big way... Big in Germany, but less so in the US and Canada. Living in Germany in the 70's and 80's they were very much a band of the era... Synth, poetic lyrics and the looks... moving out of the 70's into the 80's. I went to a few of their concerts and every one was packed with great music, still enjoy it. Throws me back to great times!😊😊😊

It was that particular broadcast which made me love SAGA. Saw them recently in Cologne - even at 70, Michael Sadler still hits the notes on point. Simply incredible.
