The band has been constantly successful in Germany since its inception. It is also very popular in Puerto Rico: Saga has visited the island twelve times. Saga's second concert in Puerto Rico (1981) caused riots from fans trying to crash into a sold-out concert that sold over 10,000 tickets. Most of the inner cover photographs from the original vinyl release of In Transit (1982) were taken in Puerto Rico, including a live photograph from the 1981 concert. For a few years, a keyboard riff from their song "No Regrets" became the background music for station breaks at WCAD-FM in San Juan. The band received formal recognition as distinguished visitors from the Puerto Rican legislature in February 2005. Their concert on December 9, 2007 (at the Pier 10 Arena club in Old San Juan) was the last concert that Michael Sadler did with Saga until his announcement of returning to the band on January 2011. I was 17 years old when enjoy their 2nd concert in Puerto Rico in 1981, It was awesome!! Love this band and their music!

Decades later, the director of the venue where they played recently is my neighbor and took me to their rehearsal. I took my 6-year old son. His first music concert macho man alpha gorilla live experience! He had a blast! Afterwards, we went onstage and saw all the gear, met them all, signed my stuff, talked and shared with them, gave them tips on our island and more. They signed the original lsilent knight lp my dad bought me when it came out. A dream come true experience!

I'm not America, but I've lived in the States since 1977. Listened to Saga in my college days. I'm astounded they never made it in this country; they're so excellent
@derekbaker32796 жыл бұрын
@@spa97229 I have a few friends in the American midwest who are into Prog Rock and followed Saga from early on. Back in the 70s and early 80s, there still were some radio stations in the U.S. that were independent operations and/or DJs had a lot of control over what was played. Perhaps my friends in the U.S.A. lucked-out with a good local stations? There are a lot of excellent bands that never got the attention in the U.S.A. that they deserved. Here's my explanation, which is not intended as any form of judgement, but merely observation & analysis... (1) Some of it has to do with the large population & the huge number of American bands that were/are trying to make it big. It's easy for any band to get lost in the crowd. (2) Another reason is that tastes & playlists were very regional until all the stations got bought up by the big corporations. So word of mouth back then didn't travel everywhere, and some parts of the U.S.A. may not have had many stations interested in playing Saga's music. (3) Also, so much of the U.S.A. had/has a more conservative mindset than much of Canada & Europe. Consequently, the nation tends to be 'culturally isolationist', so without considerable hype, Americans (on-average) are less quick to embrace change than people in urban Canada or Europe. (N.Y. and L.A. are obvious exceptions) That is reflected in the arts, and (4) Finally, there is an undercurrent of patriotism in the U.S.A. that leads to a form of 'cultural protectionism', plus a belief that everything American is better (a mis-interpretation of "American Exceptionalism" that was/is pervasive), so many people in the U.S.A. are less interested in looking outside their borders for cultural or political inspiration. Obviously I don't want to paint everyone in the U.S.A. with the same brush, and there are plenty of exceptions to what I have stated, however, overall, I think these are some of the factors that tend to make it harder for bands from outside the U.S.A. to get a nation-wide, mainstream following there than it is for those bands to 'make it big', in other nations around the world. (an exception...perhaps bands from the U.K.?).

I'd like to know from a German fan, why was Saga such a hit in Germany?
@MarlowCpt10 жыл бұрын
ben vad Because they had that uniquely magical sound, that seemed to fit the time and the spirit back then. All at once, pretty much everyone I knew, listened to them and I got swept away as well. I guess it was just the right time and the right setting for a band like this. And now - 30 years later, I still get chills when I hear their music, because it seems to be part of the soundtrack of my life. Except now - more than back then, I seem to have a sudden understanding of the intelligence and artistic craftsmanship that lies in their work.

Bought the first album blind. Had a strong suspicion it would be something special from the cover art and the song titles. And boy was I right. What a time to be alive. The artists poured so much creativity into their music all decade long. The music of the '70s matched the cinema of the '70s in cerebral immersion, while staying accessible. Saga's songs on that first album are so brilliantly conceived and stunningly played. Sadly most music listeners didn't have the chops to recognize Saga's genius. I think there's a lesson there for those of us that did. Maybe such stirring music *can't* be understood as such by most ears. It's sad, because this band never received their full due. But for us as individuals . . . well, I think we can be damn proud of our discriminating tastes.

@robertballot38694 жыл бұрын
@@williamneedham245 I'm glad you caught it. As an avid MTV watcher in those early days, I know it came and went pretty quickly and I don't think it made it to more than medium rotation. I already was a huge Saga fan by then, discovering their first album in the record store bins and taking a flyer on it. I found it incredibly impressive, second track to last (first was no better than so-so and left me wondering whether I'd like the rest on first listen). So when "Don't Be Late" made it to MTV I felt both pride and immense happiness that they had more majestic music in them. Took a long time to find Silent Knight, however, in record stores. Saga had gone dark for me for three years. In those days there was no way of knowing about album releases other than the radio and what the stores carried. So you can imagine my surprise to learn that two more albums had followed the debut. Eventually found it in a record store in Syracuse, where I went to college. Didn't take that warmly to it for a long time (inner sleeve sucked and that always, subliminally, was part of the experience for me). But now I really do like it. I don't have Images of Twilight anymore, but I remember feeling, it too, was a big step down from the first album. How I would love for time to have proved me wrong on that one too. Should seek it out.
