I just bought the physical release of this game as an early birthday present. I found a great deal for it on ebay, and it is my 30th Switch game. Literally half the games in my collection are all Square Enix titles because RPGs are my favorite genre.

Cool. Do you have Legend Of Mana? Star Ocean Second Story R? Chrono Cross? These are some of my favourite RPG’s I own and play on the switch. And I recently got Skies Of Arcadia for the Dreamcast recently as well. I Don’t have any SaGa games. What ones are you favorites from your collection? Any you’d recommend?

@@Wil_Dsense I have physical releases for all 3 of them. So far I have only played Star Ocean Second Story R but I love what I've played of it. I have also sampled Romancing SaGa 2 and 3 but SaGa Frontier is my favorite SaGa game so far. Another SE game that I highly recommend is Octopath Traveler. I got it for my birthday and despite not playing it until the last week of April I am over 50 hours into it. Part of the reason that I've been playing it so much is that I want to complete the main game before I start on the sequel which I also got for my birthday. My A team is all over level 50 plus I have unlocked 2 of the 4 secret secondary classes, and I have only finished 10 of the 32 chapters so I am going to be breezing through part of the game which is fine with me. I love RPGs because I enjoy level grinding, it rarely bores me for whatever reason and the payoff of making enemies and bosses easier is always worth it. Besides, I've already had enough challenge from this game because the 2 optional bosses I fought are 2 of the hardest bosses I have ever fought in any RPG. I had to strategize and equip a whole new set of skills to defeat them.

I do wish they'd make new games with pre rendered backgrounds. The only instance of this i can even think of is Pillars Of Eternity and the new Fantasian which both look absolutely outstanding.

It’s certainly possible to make detailed backgrounds today, but as SwitchWatch said, if you’re going to model a background then you might as well just render it in full 3D thanks to today’s hardware. Another big source of detraction from pre-rendered backgrounds is the move from CRT televisions to LED which really magnifies certain artifacts in how the backgrounds appear. If you’ve ever played FF7 on an LED television, you will immediately recall how much nicer it looked when you first played it, and it isn’t just the nostalgia. That said, I would love more new RPGs to use pre-rendered backgrounds as a throwback, or even experiment and develop something based on that concept. I also wouldn’t mind more games to use watercolor backgrounds as well like SaGa Frontier 2, which is still one of the most beautiful games visually.

I am so stoked for this! I day-one'd the original in '98 and have this one pre-ordered, locked & loaded. I will say straight away that the non-linear aspects can make it easy to get distracted, but it's also cool to be able to go off the beaten path so early in a JRPG.

This is my most anticipated game of the first half of 2021. It was the 4th or 5th game I got on PS1 and I loved it but was never able to beat all the stories. Waiting another month and half until the May 31st release date (plus time for international shipping since it's not coming out in my region) is going to be torture.

I chose Blue first back in the day when I borrowed the game from a friend shortly after it released. All it did was make the game more confusing than it already would have been even had chosen a more newbie character like Red.

Beginner's Tip: no matter who you start as, pick up the Tarot Magic quest first, then go to Scrap and recruit Gen. He is one of the best Sword users in the game!

About SaGa Frontier 2, well, it's confirmed to receive a remaster alongside Romancing SaGa (either the original one or Minstrel Song) and Unlimited SaGa in a livestream by the developers of the series. In fact, the livestream also revealed that a new SaGa game is in development.

I had a rerun of this game a while ago (PS1 version) and I'd like to recommend anyone wanting to understand the game's mechanics to look after "Saga Frontier's Data Mechanics" by Zaraktheus. The guy made a .txt document depicting stuff like how skills sparkle, how the combo system work etc. Won't link anything, unless you'd like to... but the dude made a damn fine work at comprehending how this gem works. Once again, good job!

🚀 I rented this on PS1 as a kid, and also decided to start with Blue.... it was a very confusing and obtuse experience, but the colorful visuals and catchy music were enough to pique my interest. About a year later I had my parents order me a used copy online, over dial up internet, and the disc took no less than a month to show up in my mailbox, but I’ve been a fan ever since. 🙂

I'd normally just google it, but I really want to play this game blind, so I might as well ask here. The earlier Romancing Saga games had a thing where the monsters got stronger the more you fought, so over-grinding could make the game become too difficult. Does this game have a similar mechanic?

Yes but I don’t think over grinding makes it difficult as the bosses don’t change (as far as I’m aware) and the bosses are way more powerful than the normal enemies

🚀 Great review! I'm glad as someone who never played the original, you were able to see/review it for what it was and still is. If you are a JRPG fan, this is a different take on that traditional formula that I really loved. If you don't like JRPG's, it's probably going to be a hard sell since it's more free form in its approach. This game personally changed my "gaming" life and it's sad seeing so many outlets giving it poor scores because it wasn't a FF7 level of "remaster" or don't understand the original appeal to begin with.

Sorry, but the mixture of soft low res backgrounds mixed with over sharp mobile quality character models is just right. What’s wrong with 32 bit pixel art? Either SE didn’t hire the talent for this or just plain cheapened out. I’ll stick to the original.

You will miss the full Story and Original Vision of the Game though due to the new character arc which has been cut due to time limitations from the original and puts all storylines together. No matter how visuals turn out to be I always prefer more content. That being said I consider the remaster the definitive version of This Game.

Why aren’t a lot of Square-Enix titles receiving physical releases in the West?

They don't want to pay to make them and feel like these games would not make money and because it was far cheaper to just not bother they save a ton of money. This also helps push out hard copies as game makers want hard copies to no longer be made. So blame a need to be cheap while also having the need to slowly remove hard copies from the gaming world. This need to push smaller games aside to be cheep runs really deep in this company.

@@NYCJoeBlack You can tell this is true because Capcom has a lot of Asia or Japanese only games but gave into fans after a few big games got backlash for not being sold in the west outside of just being download only. You can see a bigger push that is offset by fans.

I highly doubt that Nintendo's servers will be shut down in 10 years...Hell, the Wii servers are still active after how many years? 🚀

Wii is offline but fans made fan servers that use a different connection code. The Wii is long over but fans saved it. Try playing online in any Wii game it will fail unless you connect to a fan server.

@@cartergamegeek - I was unaware of fan servers, so I can still play Pokemon Battle Revolution online? Could you link me to some details? What this thread was about though was that the WiiWare/Virtual Console servers for the original Wii are still active to download previously purchased content.
