WOW, when they say you get a lot more honey your second year beekeeping they are NOT kidding! In total we have gotten over 160lbs of honey from our bees this year (our second year as beekeepers), AND we were able to leave all 7 colonies a nice honey cap for overwintering. Proud of our bees!!

THANK YOU for your thoughts and prayers for our bees and other farm animals during this Siberian Cold Front!! The front has passed and I believe all the colonies survived it. They have a long winter ahead still as I'm sure their numbers took a pretty major hit. Continued prayers appreciated, we'd really like to get most of the colonies (if not all) through winter!!

It was sooo cold, for soooo long here in western SD, (alt: 6,000 ft.) Incredible. If I ever do get bees, I'm gonna keep them in the (unheated) greenhouse over winter. That was NUTS!

Honey in coffee is ok, if you like it. But! :) Try it with tea. Just a neutrally tasting one, like black tea. Option 1: Honey to taste, done. Option 2: Honey to taste, and cut in a thin slice of lemon - don't squeeze, just drop it in. Option 3: Same as 2, but add a teaspoon (or two LOL) of your favorite liquor. Awesome winter cup of tea (or cold summer afternoon). Havana dark rum works nice. Cheers! :)

Do you happen to have a steel cookie sheet? I found out that traditional gingerbread was made in molds and wax was brushed in before the dough was pressed in so it wouldn't stick. I used wax to thin coat my cookie sheet when I made gingerbread and the cookies were so amazing! I've used it in my cast iron too, but I forget what u was making. You can make cast iron conditioning bars, come to think of it.

What a palaver. I've just harvested 7 flow frames (from 3 hives) it took about 2 hours to get 3kg per frame straight into the jars (it was 29 C at the time). To compare and extrapolating to 26 frames - ( translating to archaic measurements :) ). that is 78 kg = 172 pounds. My washing up was 3 little tubes, I can't see any squished dead bees and my jars are at least 5 different colours. Admittedly I don't have the wax from these frames as the bees will deal with that, but I don't use it anyway as I don't like it (and if I wanted it, I can get frames from elsewhere and do it the old fashioned messy way). Yes they are expensive but I love love love mine and well worth the investment so I don't do all that work. Also as I'm not homogenising the honey, I get all the different flavours. Best bit - no harm to my busy bees and they weren't even angry at me. (this time) In a couple of weeks I'll be harvesting another 6-7 frames for hopefully another 20 ish kg. Over the year my frames produce at least 3 harvests - but that depends on your climate and flowering. I just wouldn't want to do that much through the old fashioned method.

Regarding honey in coffee, if you warm your creamer and add the honey to it until it dissolves, it may improve the coffee experience. I have done this with my non-dairy homemade creamers, but have not yet tried it with goat's milk/cream. And with beeswax, I've made solid lotion bars, lip balm, salve, candles, wax melts, coated thin fabric to make reusable wraps (used much like plastic cling film), and to cap jelly/jam when we ran out of lids. (Out of an abundance of caution, these were only stored in the fridge, but my great-aunt "swore by" using parafin lids...)

Not sure if this recipe is in the book but you could make some wooden spoon butter, of course good for bowls and cutting boards. Thank you Heather and Merry anne for praying for mr big wattles. He is starting to show slight improvements. The blisters,infection and swelling are going down(slowly but its progress) he kept chattering to me when i walked past and he managed to eat a few bites by himself yesterday, i soaked some food in electrolytes and held it up on a spoon for him so his wattles wouldn't hit the floor when he tried to eat. I told him he was not going back outside till it got warm and that i may get so used to him being inside i may not want to take him back out. Have a beautiful day and may blessings be upon you both❤🐓

Wow you did great. I am not a coffee drinker but I have used honey in my tea and love it but I can't afford honey lately I am now homeless living out of my car with my husband and dog. I am so glad our kids are with a friend because we live in Rhode Island and the last few nights the temperature has gotten down to single digits. I thought I wasn't going to make it to see the sun come up. We don't have enough blankets to keep us warm and I can't go to a shelter because they don't allow pets and I would be separated from my husband and I have bad anxiety and depression. We lost our home alittle over 2 and half years ago to a fire and at the time we owned our home for almost 13 years and about 6 months before the fire our home owners insurance was dropped and we were never notified. So after the fire we couldn't pay out of pocket to fix our home we tried we used all our savings on the supplies and we were paying $ 120.00 a night for a hotel for me and the kids so we ended up losing our home. We been renting a house that was over $ 1,500 a month and the landlord sold the house and the new owners at first wanted us to stay and pay him rent but not even 3 weeks ago he changed his mind and we had to rent a uhal and a storage unit so that's why we are homeless living in our car. The prices in R.I. are so high and I need to have atleast 3 bedrooms. I am praying that we find something soon because I am too old to be living in my car (43) and I want my family together again.

Several of the people that keep bees in my area have said that they don’t have any left. What time of year do you typically do this process? And is it only once a year. I’m wondering so that I can start looking for local honey at the right time. Maybe I’ll get lucky.

Great harvest! Good demonstration of the refractometer, but considering that the vast majority of the honey was capped I wouldn't have been shy about including the frame that was largely uncapped. As a rule of thumb I want to see at least 3/4 of the cells capped so your one frame would have been a tiny portion overall. But "when in doubt, leave it out" and feeding it back to the bees is a good option, too. As for honey in coffee, I'm typically a black coffee drinker but after my 1st bout of C19 I couldn't take the flavor. I'd just take a spoonful of honey and stir it in to add some sweetness - crystallized honey was great for this. Strangely, my 2nd round of C19 seemed to reset my taste buds and I'm back to black coffee now. 🤷‍♂

My smell was messed up for 18 MONTHS after we got it. If it was supposed to smell bad it smelled like garlic scrambled eggs. It was so confusing and I still haven't had garlic scrambled eggs since LOL I was definitely worried about ruining the whole batch so the bees get that one! It makes sense that the one 21% frame would probably not take the whole rest of the other 26 frames above 19. Some of the honey I tested was at 17.5%!!

I'm not one for polishing furniture, but that's definitely a great use for the wax! We tend to use it for body products though we have used the wax to polish deer antler and bone jewelry.

Lovely video, thanks for sharing. How often you get a harvest? Every year? Every month? Every 3 weeks?
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 8 ай бұрын
In theory. This year we chose to leave everything for the bees! We still have 2.5 gallons from last year and the bees needed it .

@@SageandStoneHomestead thanks for the reply. I think I couldn't transfer my question well enough. My actual question is that how much honey you usually get from each hive on each harvest? I see that you harvested around 125 lbs of honey from 28 frames or say 3 boxes. So how long did it take for the bees to make that much of honey? In other words when you put back the empty frames into the hives, how long will you wait for the next harvest for the approximately same amount of honey?
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 8 ай бұрын
We only harvest in fall. The bees sometimes need honey taken off during the spring flow but usually I opt to add more boxes vs take any off. How fast they fill a box depends greatly on the size of the colony. We have had them fill up an 8 frame medium in a week before!

Maybe! It's still pretty flowery and I may like a fall honey in the coffee as opposed to spring honey. We have a lot of elderflower around and it's great honey just odd in coffee.

Um thanks? We actually enjoyed this process a lot. We don't have a lot of honey to process every year and the money for an electric extractor is better spent elsewhere on our farm. My husband was exited about the honey, I'm not sure what you were reading into there. Be kind. People can get a lot of joy and fulfillment out of something you deem a waste of time.
