I love how Aang and Korra have completely opposite journeys. Aang just wanted to be himself in a world that needed him to be the Avatar, Korra wanted to be the Avatar in a world that had moved on. Aang had a lot of freedom and autonomy while he was travelling the world, but also a huge responsibility, while Korra grew up sheltered and safe, but without purpose. While Aang had to become who the world needed him to be, Korra had to become who she needed herself to be. Both are things we all need to do at different times, which for me is why both characters resonated with me at different times.

Thé way their journeys end really aren’t so different. Aang didn’t need to give up his commitment to the air nomad ways for the greater good, and Korra didn’t need to give up her role as the avatar as she knows it in a modernized world. Seeing the pattern here? Neither of them really need to make any personal sacrifices in the end.

Right it’s ironic because they would have been happy if they were born as Avatar during each other’s reign as Avatar: Aang like you said was carefree and didn’t want to be the avatar in a world that NEEDED the Avatar, so he would’ve been happy in Korra’s time period. And Korra WANTED to be the Avatar immediately when it was found out that she was the avatar in a world where the Avatar ISN’T NEEDED so she would’ve been happy being born the Avatar in Aang’s time period

At this moment, at her talk with Tenzin, she presented herself so incredibly strongly. She became a role model for me after that. Tenzin also gives her a look with such pride at that moment and Korra's response is so good. She does not look proud, but grateful and humble. Then remember Irohs words: "Pride is not the opposite of shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote." I also looked back on the seen with Kuvira and her facial expressions and words are on point. Time and time again, Kuvira pushes Korra away, attacks her verbally, but Korra responds with kindness and compassion. Her eyes and words are compassion and I love it so much. Korra has been my hero after that.

When I got a traumatic brain injury years ago this episode spoke volumes to me. It was as if I became a shell of my previous self and could never stand on my feet as I did before. Like my mind was fragmented. My doctor told me it would get better in a couple weeks. Those couple weeks turned into a couple months, all the way to a couple years. I felt so much empathy and understanding when I saw her struggling to recover from her injury and the affects it took on her mental health. It is easily my favorite episode of Korra as well. Reading your story made me feel so understood and why Korra Alone is most definitely my favorite episode, I had a stroke 1 year and a half ago (at 26 years old) and it left me with some serious physical consequences but the ones that are most insideous are the cognitive and emotional ones... When I was recovering I re-watched ATLA and LoK and season 4 but especially Korra Alone left me with a level of respect and understanding that I did not have before... It's quite a traumatizing experience when you're life's not only in danger but you get to survive and live with the consequences of it. Now I'm happy, proud and in the most part rehabilitated, but as Korra said, certain things I will never have back, my health will never be as excellent as it was, but I'm alive, I found peace and I've worked through my trauma. It's episodes like these why Korra and the show as a whole deserve way more respect than the Avatar community give them. I'm glad you where able to make a video highlighting the great symbolism in this episode. My favourite characters are the ones who don't overcome their struggles imminently but still fight to become stronger both mentally and physically, and Korra reflects that perfectly.

I hate it when people call Korra a Mary Sue. She loses more often than she wins and an argument like that misses the entire point of the character. Korra is basically a gifted kid. She is so used to being great at whatever she tries right off the bat that the minute she can't do something, she gives up. Add to that what another comment said about her only seeing value in her role as the Avatar, and not her own merits.
@violetrose6744 жыл бұрын
I relate to Korra way more than Aang. Don't get me wrong, Aang had it rough too, but we never got to see him face mental illness (maybe touched upon and hinted, but never really explored). What ATLA fans don't get is that Korra came up in a completely different time period with a completely different audience. Mental illness was a much bigger thing in the 2010s than the 2000s. The fact that they completely broke Korra down really spoke to me as a kid as I had been struggling with similar things (though not as severe). As far as main characters, Korra hits in a certain way Aang didn't for me
@aggressivepianonoises8134 жыл бұрын
Violet Rose I think the closest we got with Aang’s emotional struggle were 1. His Avatar lapses. ESPECIALLY when he found out his entire race was killed. That one was arguably the most powerful, but it was sadly hardly expanded upon until it came back for the chakra episode, which I HATED because we never got to see the actual road to him accepting his issues. They were just kinda immediately fixed for plot conveniences. 2. When Appa was gone. This was GREAT because you can really see him struggle with that feeling of loneliness. The idea of taking away Appa was brilliant and the execution was stellar because it really gave the chance to hone in on his inner conflict with isolation. Appa was the only remnant of his ruined home, his truest friend. So taking him away really proved to bring some serious emotion. Unfortunately, it felt like the absence of Appa was forgotten at times in the show, which was annoying. 3. Leading up to the Ozai fight. Great moral conflict, really showed his strong inner feelings of anxiety. Only problem: it was like two episodes, so there’s not much more to say about it...

I am trying to understand why this happened to me but nothing makes any sense. I am tired, Katara. I re-watched this episode and the following ones about half a year after surviving sexual assault and to day I have never found more fitting words to describe my journey of healing. This entire season to me feels like an incredibly mature way of showing the trauma that comes from someone else taking control of your life and the hardship that is healing. Most importantly, it shows that healing is possible. That you might never be the same, but that you can go on to live a happy and strong life without this trauma needing to be the last and only thing to have happened to you. To anyone dealing with something like this: You are loved and your personal journey of healing is allowed to take as long as it needs to, setbacks are okay and you will ultimately be okay, you are stronger than any crazy man or woman ever will be.

Korra staring at the broken mirror is wonderful symbolism as it signifies Korra’s struggle to be needed as she learned she was the avatar it became imprinted in her mind that being the avatar was all she was worth. When you said "When she cries in her mothers arms" it really sent me crying too. It reminded me of when my Anxiety was so bad that i had to skip school for over 2 weeks because the thought of going to school would give me anxiety attacks. My school was understanding (to an extent) and let me heal but I couldn't deal with it. With how depressed I was the year before that and how when i was confronted about my anxiety I was kinda gaslit, I felt so helpless, so useless, so fucking done. Everyday another anxiety attack, not eating, not sleeping, not able to communicate to the people around me what was going on not only with my body but with my mind, the way it was twisting things and making me feel worthless. And I remember my mother having to make me sleep on her lap like a little kid so that I could feel a sense of comfort. So I could feel grounded. Hence, that line hit me so hard. Even in the show that scene hit me so hard... So yeah, I'm really sorry to say this and hurt somebody's sentiments but this is why I love korra more. I connect to her so much more than I ever connected with Aang. Korra felt so much more human to me because Aang was too perfect, not that it's a bad thing!! She had to let other people help her; she had to become weak for a time; she had to accept that something had changed her and she would never be the same. Great video, I like the way LOK even starts out with her being gifted in 3 of the 4 elements from a very young age, encouraging her mind to create an idea of strong sense of self-worth. But that's all it was, an idea. The cracked mirror, to me, embodies the breakdown of idea's that we've nurtured in our minds for a long period of time...Korra appeared to be so sure of herself at the start of the series, yet she was hesitant to tell Mako how she truly felt. She appeared to be so confident in her bending, but when she wasn't able to grasp the element of air - it heavily bothered her, she even considered being the Avatar without bending the element of Air. I believe we saw the cracks her personality, in the way she avoided the element of air. She didn't want to think there was anything wrong with her, or if there was anything she needed to correct in herself. She was attempting to deny learning the element of air...the element of freedom. I think that was a big indicator to her mindset. As I mentioned earlier, Korra had already created her idea of self-worth, one of which encoraged that, was her talent in bending. But, her heavily lacking the ability to bend air threatened that idea - that she, most likely, subconsciously nurtured from the days of her youth. It's said that 'None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free' - Johann Wolfgang van Goethe. Korra chained herself to her false sense of self, she had not found strength in who she truly was, but rather in who she thought she was. The chains that are attached to her ankles and wrists resemble the prison of idea's she locked herself in. The best prison is the one you don't know your in, you're comfortable with the walls that keep you inside, you call it 'home'...you think it keeps you safe, when in it reality locks you in. Keeps you in figurative chains so you don't leave. Korra told herself she didn't want to leave that prison, told herself she was comfortable and anything that questioned the prisons security had to be ignored. Growth requires freedom, to explore different idea's, the exploration of foreign concepts. This is embodied when Zaheer, a past enemy who questioned the Avatar, is able to help her find her way. To summarise, as humans we tend to formulate constructs that keep ourselves locked in the idea's we have of who we think we are, which may be based on something we may be talented and/or gifted in, however, like Korra we may anchor ourselves to these idea's too much, to the point that we have an existential crisis when those idea's that we've nurtured get broken down. In ATLA, we see how life is a constant probing and testing, conjecture and refutation...and the consequences of when we don't do that are seen through the main character in the LOK. So, find a purpose ignite your internal flame. Be as free as air. Let your emotions flow like water. Be as firm and patient as earth. Be the Avatar.

Ok so I recently watched TLOK for the first time, I came in with the mindset of it being a bad show due to Korra. This show is freaking awesome, I understand that Korra maybe not as strong as aang, she is stubborn and sometimes aggressive, but her growth as the avatar was amazing, she had so much pressure to deal with in the show. I don’t understand what the hate Against her is, this show for a first time watcher was amazing, and so was ATLA.
@Doubleranged14 жыл бұрын
I feel like Korra is a way more interesting protagonist than Aang. At the end it feels for me that Aang did not grow mentally, while Korra did so much. Yes, Aang physically learned a lot and other main characters did have personal growth, but Aang never had to make the difficult decisions or grow as a person. He always kept running away for the true challenges. He was this wise kid, who always was wise and already knew how to be incredibly mature constantly. Korra is way more relatable for me in that regard.
@meo84144 жыл бұрын
That’s the thing, these comments don’t even allow you to make your own inferences and only say that “Korra bad dont watch”. If you want to deem Korra bad, watch it yourself and make that opinion. I think that the Avatar fandom is highly toxic because of this.

@sanjanarao33644 жыл бұрын
I think the haters expected a replacement for ATLA, with similar environments, vibes, characters, etc. I also went into TLOK expecting it to be subpar and while it’s clear that the pressure from Nickelodeon caused some cramped seasons, I still think it’s an amazing show and evokes the same emotional response as ATLA. As a replacement for ATLA, of course it will disappoint but seeing it as an extension of ATLA makes it so much better and the nostalgia is still there. I’m really hoping the writers will continue building the Avatar universe, it’s clear they have so much creativity and passion for it.

This is why I love the legend of Korra. The show itself is my form of healing when the days aren’t so good. It’s nice to see that representation within a character; it’s as if I’m not alone-I have somebody I can learn from. Korra helps me to stay strong. “I know I was in a pretty dark place after I was poisoned, but I finally understand why I had to go through all that” :- She helps me to remember that healing takes time and patience, more so she helps me keep faith in myself so that I can grow.

My favorite episode was the one where tenzin was taking on zaheer and the red lotus. Season four was easily my favorite season, possibly because I struggle with mental health myself. What I enjoyed was how much more realistic this season was than others. In the other season, all of the villains were basically mutants. They were unrealistically powerful. Kuvira was certainly strong, but she wasn't extraordinarily strong like the villains of the previous 3 seasons. I loved the realness that Korra's PTSD brought to this season.

Also, I feel like kuvira was the one villain that wasn't too far gone, and I think recovery for her wouldn't be too much of a long shot. I love this. The show gets much hate from being so different but to me, that’s what makes it great. Showing someone who isn’t needed trying to find their place. Her growth as a person surpasses that of most shows and may not be loved by all, but deserves to be respected. And you captured this perfectly

This episode truly touched me. I have never been disabled, but I was raped (technically sexually assaulted). I can understand someone hurting you and breaking you (her physically, me mentally). You will never feel more tiny than when someone you think you should be able to fend off takes complete control of your body. For me it was my rapist, a woman half my size. For Korra, it was Zaheer. The flashbacks are hell on Earth and the depression is next level. You feel that you will never know happiness again. But while you will never be the same, you can learn to grow and love the new you, just like me and Korra did.

As one who deals with clinic depression, this episode tore my soul... To see the depression portrayed as it was on Korra, how she thought that it would take weeks to heal, and ended up struggling for years, the realization that she would never be as she was before... the fact that none of it shows on her on the outside... the need to change how you see yourself so you cut your hair... It was very very hard to watch... I didn't have that post trauma to hold me back, but I can say that the depression alone is hard enough to handle, even when you can't see the demons that holds you back... dealing with those demons in addition to the depression seems like a mission too hard to handle... Seeing it in Korra was an amazing eye-opening experience... and so horrifyingly painful... The fact that I could relate with it to that extent just proves how well this show was made. ❤

Korra has better character development than Aang. She was from a hothead teenager turns to be a mature woman. Because since Season 2, ever since she lost her connection from the past and even got poisoned by Zaheer and struggling to overcome her PTSD, it's the good character development. Meanwhile, Aang is always running away and is always giving up so easily and even when he needed to face Ozai, he abandoned his friends and running away again and makes his friends worry. Korra even she has flaws, she's never giving up.

It was so relatable to me, a creative who was taken advantage of by their business partner, at the same time i was constantly afraid of not growing creatively. There's such a raw disappointment and rage when you're an athlete or artist who has defined their whole existence by talent and progress but it can often be too much to handle. You expect so much more of yourself always and one failure feels like a hundred miles back. Your worst fear is that you've reached your limits and your easiest way out is to stop trying. When things came easy to you they may also become the same things you grow to fear. Then you feel ashamed and embarrassed to even think that.

I braved the hell others created for me in one way or another. And came out the other side with a smile smelling like smoke. Forged out of the fires of a cold heartless world. about two years ago, for around a year i was in a constant state of healing from an abusive relationship. i still am. but that year was one of the hardest of my life. every single day was a struggle and i was consumed by anger and rage even in my dreams. everyone knew what had happened, the person didn’t live near me anymore but everyone knew and they knew how affected i was by it. i turned into an asshole, i had revenge fantasies and prided myself on my anger. i was a truly bitter and hateful person during that time, people were scared of me. this episode really hit home for me because i was fighting against myself but also another person. i never got my confrontation, i never got my strength back. i slowly became less hateful and angry and have recently started letting myself become softer and more vulnerable. there was one night where i just absolutely lost it, crying and screaming that i needed to go the hospital because something was wrong with me. that person, that situation, that one year shaped my entire life. the only thing i was is what had happened to me, and it was out of my control. even if i had tried to move past it at that point everything i did, everything i was was a reflection of my anger and my pain. i can’t say what healing feels like as i don’t think i will ever fully heal, much like korra. but it’s so comforting to see an almost exact depiction of what trauma and hopelessness feels like

There are definitely a 'lot' of legitimate criticisms that can be leveled at Legend of Korra, but, I will agree that many have written it off entirely as though it's a bad show, when it's actually pretty good, and in many places is excellent. I would say that if someone liked ATLA, and truly gave LOK a real, honest attempt, they would probably like it. There's just way too much good in it for it to deserve 'all' of the hate that it receives.

KaMau Mau she didn’t master it at 4 years old she could just use it. The first episode they said they have been training her in the 3 elements for approximately 13 years and she just technically mastered fire (the 3rd element she mastered) in the first few minutes of episode 1 before being told she will begin her air bending training

KaMau Mau making a tiny pillar and tiny flame and moving a puddle of water looked mastered to you? Did you ever see ATLA or TLOK?

After going through so much this year, I relate to Korra a lot more now. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in January of this year, had surgery a few weeks later, became so weak and tired due to the lack of a thyroid and thyroid hormones, had a quarantine within a quarantine for radioactive iodine to kill off any remaining cancer cells, now being on thyroid hormones for 4 months now, and am still healing. More-so now on a mental level than a physical one. The depression I was in for the few weeks between my diagnosis and subsequent surgery was horrible. I distracted myself, I didn't want to sleep, when I did sleep I didn't want to get up, I didn't want to talk to anyone other than my boyfriend and parents, and after my surgery I felt so disgusted and dysphoric with my scar that it took me months to finally be comfortable enough to finally post a picture of it on my Twitter two weeks ago. Even now I still struggle with accepting my scar, and I still sometimes don't want to sleep. Now that I'm back at the place where I got the first phone call of my diagnosis, I worry if I'll get bad news again just like my cancer diagnosis. It hasn't been easy, but I'm healing. I don't think I'll ever fully get over it, but I think in time, I'll be able to accept what happened, change, and grow.

Toph was the kind of mentor Korra needed. Korra is so cute with the way she interacts with Toph
