The hike and climb from Cascade Pass to Sahale Arm, Sahale Glacier Camp and Sahale Peak is a must if you are in Washington's North Cascades National Park. Simply put, this is probably the most beautiful hike in the state of Washington and arguably the entire United States. The Sahale Arm area is definitely a top ten hike in the United States. The never ending beauty begins at the Cascade Pass Trailhead at the end of Cascade River Road near Marblemount, Washington. The Sahale Mountain area should be on every serious hikers bucket list. Several switchbacks lead you up and out of the forest into gorgeous rolling alpine meadows. Sahale Glacier Camp is the next objective and its eagle nest type campsites made out of stacked rocks offer some of the most incredible views in the entire park. Continue up and over Sahale Glacier to Sahale Mountain for even more outstanding views of the North Cascades. For spectacular views of the North Cascades, put the Cascade Pass Trail and Sahale Arm hike on your bucket list.

Enjoy your videos. Done many of the peaks in North Cascades. Been 30 years or so. Too old and disabled now. Views bring back memories of the awesome beauty there. Bag those peaks while you can.

I did this climb last Summer car to car in late August. It was a long day. It looks like the smoke cleared for you. You couldn't even see a clear view of all the mountains at the trailhead when we did it. It was still a great climb.

I bet you were right around the time we were up there. We got so lucky. Two days before that for almost a week it was terrible! That Sourdough Mountain fire screwed up everything!

My husband and a friend summitted last summer from the west side of the mountain and then came over, with rope on the summit. Then we went down the south eastern side and went down Sahalee arm. I think that was a better route. We had two cars and parked each from the separate trailheads.

Hey guys! This is an amazing video! Thank you for taking us along. Which kind of camera are you using? If it's a GoPro, would you kindly provide your GoPro settings? Your videos have made planning our hiking itinerary easier as my family and I head to Washington in August. Thank you!

Thanks 🙏🏼! I shoot with a GH5 and we also use an IPhone 14 Pro Max because the camera is so good. We do use a GoPro 7 once in a while. I set the WB to around 5000K, auto SS, ISO 100, linear, 4K but never seem to like the outcome. The newer GoPros have a much better picture. I think I’m going to get a 12 for this seasons POV shots 😁

What a bummer not hitting the summit. I know the feeling it leaves behind. I know you'll be back. You feel like there's any chance you could summit without ropes and down climb?
@TheMountainMatt
@TheMountainMatt 3 ай бұрын
It was a hard pill to swallow, especially looking back now. The angle was slanted back towards the mountain so footholds were the issue. We couldn't see our footholds coming down. There could be another way up. We took the obvious path to the tie in. Going up that part would have been ok but coming down would have been super sketch. I've seen tie ins a bunch lately and I'll try not to forget rope from now on that's for sure! Drives me crazy! A better climber than me could most likely down climb. I'm decent but that area made us stop and analyze the situation.

How is the final approach ? Does it require roped traversal ?
@TheMountainMatt
@TheMountainMatt Ай бұрын
It was basically a glacier in name only although very steep. We maneuvered around the crevasses fairly easy. Not sure how your climbing skills are but maybe bring a rope so you don't run into the same problem we did at the summit block 👍🏼

Thanks David! There’s no entry fee to visit North Cascades NP 👍🏼If you’re backpacking you’ll have to get a backcountry permit in Marblemount at the wilderness info building/ranger station or possibly online. I think the campsites up near Sahale need to be reserved at the wilderness building as well.

how long did the glacier take? and for an experienced hiker who's never done glaciers would this be a feasible first and what equipment would be necessary? Thanks!
@TheMountainMatt
@TheMountainMatt 4 күн бұрын
The glacier only took us 30-45 mins. It's very steep and depending on the year it could have hidden crevasses. It was late in the season when we went up so everything was visible and obvious. I would definitely bring crampons and an ice axe. Depending on the conditions you might want to rope up with somebody. Sahale Glacier is typically a glacier in name only as it is a small glacier but a glacier nonetheless. It's a good glacier to cut your teeth on. Research glacier travel for sure and try to practice with your equipment before getting on it. Have a blast!
