Preparation:
Verify Orders and Consent:
Verify the physician's order for the procedure.
Obtain patient consent if necessary.
Gather Supplies:
NG tube of appropriate size and type for the patient's age and size.
Lubricant for the tube.
10-20 mL syringe for aspiration and air bolus.
pH testing strips or devices for confirming placement.
Tape or securement device to secure the tube.
Gloves and protective equipment as necessary.
Towel or bib to protect the patient's clothing.
Stethoscope for auscultation.
Explain the Procedure:
Explain the procedure to the patient and address any concerns or questions.
Discuss the sensation they might feel during insertion and how to communicate if they need you to stop.
Position the Patient:
Have the patient sit upright with their head in a slightly forward position.
Insertion:
Measure the Tube:
Measure the length of the NG tube needed from the tip of the nose to the earlobe and down to the xiphoid process (the bottom of the breastbone).
Mark the measurement on the tube with a piece of tape.
Lubricate the Tube:
Apply water-soluble lubricant to the tip of the NG tube to ease insertion.
Insert the Tube:
Ask the patient to tilt their head back slightly and gently insert the tube through the nose.
Once the tube reaches the nasopharynx, ask the patient to tilt their head forward and swallow (you can offer sips of water to help with swallowing if allowed).
Continue inserting the tube slowly and gently while the patient swallows until the marked length is reached.
