this video is a second part of "sai vs katana" LINK to part 1 : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iarUlaqCbappo8k in this video i don't intend to hate sai as a weapon, I really like sai and Rafael was my favorite turtle (TMNT) I'm not saying that sai are stupid... they work pretty well against weapons of similar size... but duel vs Katana probably it is not the best idea if you want to keep your fingers, arms or head together :P my sparring partner was veeeery nice to me here... it was very chill and light sparring : )

Good vid, however sais aren’t really offensive weapons they’re for defence and counter attacks. They’re also mixed with other strikes such as kicks, knees or simply straight punches using the bottom of the handle. My advice would be to try reverse gripping on one hand to block then hook and the other to attack with the point or blunt end of the sai. Keep up the awesome content man!

Thanks! Actually This is my second video about sai (it is just a reply). I kinda like this weapon.... but against sword...do not work so we'll (or any longer or sharp weapon). I did spar Vs wing chun knives or other shorter or similar size weapons and it was not that bad compared to katana. (Part 1 is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iarUlaqCbappo8ksi=byow0Mwr2dB0eXmz) This reverse grip seems like a good idea but against the sword is not ideal(in my opinion). Because yes you can block buuut big chances that the blade will slide and cut you anyway... I have tried sparring in many different ways... And I feel safest with holding them in a "normal" way. Because this gives some distance and better protects the fingers(in my opinion). But you know... I am not an expert, I just like to do weapon sparring and learn from experience just by trying the techniques in real sparring not just drilling with somebody who has no intention to really hit me(like in the drills) : ) I believe that somebody who is good with sai could do much better than me and I never had intentions to offend any masters out there, I am just a sofa warrior soo I know that I am not the best hehe Thank you for the advice, next time I will try it out in the sparring (if I do it again):)

Many of the traditional small weapons dont have a chance against a larger weapon like the katana. But one good strategi against the katana would be to throw the one sai and hit the opponent and then strike or stab with the other sai. But we must also think about the context, this was friendly sparring, no fast or hard hits. But still fun sparring
@MonkeyFist4 ай бұрын
@@shinobihiriyu-originalninj4634 in my first video I covered this strategy heh because sai it is pretty heavy thing, Aldo pointy so if it stick then it is great but if not then you will feel it too, worse if you miss or your oponent redirect it, then you will end up from bad situation to really really bad one hehe Yea, here we spared very chill, but there are MASTERS out there who never even thought about sparring and they claiming that thing would works 100% hehe In a REAL duel (with real weapons)... Sai guys would should not try fancy things because katana is super sharp and any mistake can cost you a finger, arm or head... And katana guy would not be that nice like in this video... They would not play, In sparring I am thinking that it is real so I do not trying to be a hero and do risky things... I am thinking that any mistake can be deadly. I am not the master of weapons but I like to try them out in sparrings... I would say that 30s of flow super light sparring where both sides want to hit each other (not just touching or connecting weapon to weapon like a gun game but really try to touch the body) propably would give more information about reality than 30h of drilling some techniques. (I do not saying that drilling is bad... Drilling it is a part of the training which prepare you for sparring or fight - but many people forgetting about the last part...which is a sparring hehe)

@@MonkeyFist Yeah i agree I also think you learn more from sparring than drills, or you learn the most important in a short time . When you find something that works you can make some drills or kata

make an x with the sai to increase your catch area. once the katana touches the sai lock the two sai together to hold the katana. then slide in and stab you did a good job though and your friend is also skilled

@@Incognito144 thanks for comment, and advice! : D We did 2rounds (2min) I tried to catch it in many different ways. And is not easy to do it when somebody don't want to be hited or simple just fight back. (In secound round I was giving up a little hehe) My opponent was SUPER nice and chill and still IT was not helping hehe When I spar like that, I am trying to think that it is for real (even when we go chill) every mistake can cost me a finger, arm or head in this case... And oponent is not stupid like it is practised in drills or applications that after swing he freeze and I can do my thing... So in a sparring I do not want to be action movie hero but play smart and don't die so fast (the plan did not work well in here hehe) Sai it is very cool weapon, I like it a lot...also Raphael was my favourite TMNT hehe sai is good against similar size weapons... Buuuut... katana? I don't think so... Two sais in one line are still shorter than katana... + It is blant(but pointy) Vs sharp... I had only one good sparring with sai Vs katana... And it was when we did not have any protective gear(NO head gear+gloves) so we was going easy on each other... But in sparring or fight you want to hit your oponent so then it getting more difficult heh But again... as I always say... I am not a master so what I can know hehe. I invited people to prove me wrong in this video-to send me footage from real sparring where both sides don't want to "die"hehe I may not know everything but I know that practice tends to beat theory and here, sparring it is practice and drilling is theory. But! I will definitely try your idea next time (I did try it before in old sparringi but i can try it again in the future) 😁 Thanks for your point of view, I appreciate it : )

my understanding is that sai were historically never sharpened at the tip. Doesn't mean a quick poke to the face isn't effective though!
@MonkeyFist4 ай бұрын
@@AudBid it was defensive weapon. But I have seen some with blades as well but those was probably not "regular" ones. Normally It is a blant weapon but quite heavy and pointy so it is as you said...Fast poke can do the work!

I'm kinda disappointed with the results because in my head sword catching techniques would totally work...😅 But that's alright, sometimes you just need a reality check, isn't it?🤷♂️ Thanks for making a follow up video as an answer to my comment. @@lualdiz i am am also a bit disappointed because I like this weapon and Raphael from TMNT was my favourite turtle hehe I do not saying that this techniques are not possible to use, I just saying that it is difficult to do it. Maybe agains different weapon would work much better? Who knows : ) Maybe in the future I will try again with some other strategy. Or just do more high risk moves to get to the oponent. Will see what future will bring. That day when we was doing this sparring, we did also round with kusarigama, so near future it will pop-up on my channel: D but I am mixing content here so I am not sure when it will be: p I am happy that you enjoy my content and thank you for support 🙏

@@MonkeyFist It's a good first try, but at lower skill levels the longer weapon has an utterly oppressive advantage; which barely decreases to merely oppressive if both opponents are highly skilled. Measure, mobility, threat, aggression, and being able to match the position of your opponent's hands are the main things from my experience which might let you bring this down to 'merely oppressive': Measure: Developing an acute sense of a handful of ranges will allow you to conceptualize the danger far better. The ranges are out of range; extended hand in range, upper torso in range (serious danger zone), leg in range (by now, your opponent has screwed up too), and grappling (you should be able to dash from extended hand to grappling in one quick step, or at least try to...). Any attacks from extended hand in range distance can be assumed to be targeting the lead hand, or nothing at all. That is a good distance for you, as is grappling, or any distance where you have bound their sword. Anything else is death... Mobility: You need to be able to burst-dash and control the relevant measure. This implies a loaded, and more importantly balanced stance, rather than the leaning, squared off stance you currently have. This stops working so well if your opponent is just as good at retreating as your are at advancing though! Threat: You always attack his sword. Your opponent let you have the chance to do so here, and consistently punishes you for it, because why not? He knows exactly what you're trying to attack. He gets a turn at the same turn you try to attack his sword, and he uses it to either get it out of the way, or immediately counterattack. I doubt attacking his blade as a first intention move with commitment will work - if you must, you should try to sneak that in; else it's better to catch on their attack or committed movement; and otherwise try to present a threat against your opponent instead. Easier said than done by far; but the problem is at least *somewhat* analogous to trying to close in to grapple in normal sword-on-sword. Matching the position of your opponent's hands: The quickest strike your opponent can make will come from their wrists from the position of their hands. You are basically closest to surviving this if you can roughly match where their hands are, as a result. This can be made far less effective if the enemy were to refuse their blade, especially with a blade-back guard that lets them strike from any angle at their leisure.

As much as Sai/Zai/Tetsushaku are stand alone within kobudo... Dealing with a sword, you need three not too (i.e. Kata San cho Zai) They're also able to utilize the empty handed forms within karate. The weapon is an extension of the body and it's extremities, stationary and in motion. In this video from a combative perspective, there is no bunkai, oyo, or henka from kobudo/karate. It is said to be a defensive weapon, but the counter's with this weapon are close range. The weapon is also used to hit, more particularly "Toshi" which is a flaying technique that for execution. Vital areas for a kendoka, even tho he is wearing Kote, a furi uchi to his wrist would disable him, especially to the dominant hand; most practitioners are not ambidextrous with the left hand being dominant. In a Jodan position stab his armpit. Don't take the attack head on... In the Nijyu Kun, "Move according to your opponent. Lastly (for commentary) Nage waza, throwing the sai into his foot. Thanks for sharing. If i had someone ro spar with, I would honor your request for shooting a video. I a few practice vids on my page, however, they are solo informal practice sessions of karate kata and some kobudo kata. You got a subscription 🎉
