If anyone wants to skip the details of how I made this discovery, go to 2:01 to see what happens when you put a Blank CD into a Dreamcast.
A few days ago, I discovered this cool but scary trick that you can do with the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast is capable of playing three formats: GD-ROM, Audio CD, and MIL-CD.
But it never occurred to me, until now, that what if I were to put a blank cd into a Dreamcast. The results, I must say, are quite catastrophic.

My guess is that it spins higher and higher as it can't find data and then just is in the mode "looking......looking......looking" and then you open the console, it still is looking and is not "oh you want me to stop the disc ok". Neat find.

This also happens when the laser eye of the optical drive goes bad, with any disc. Funny thing is when you put in a normal dreamcast game, it will go to the audio player and play the warning for audio systems. ("This is a dreamcast disc, and will only be playable on a dreamcast system. Please remove the disc from the player now, or it might cause serious damage to it's speakers.")

The reason for this. The dreamcast is trying to find the lead in on the blank. As it cant find it, it assume the disk is damaged and so spins it up faster to try to overcome scratches or other damage. The reason for it still spinning when you open the dreamcast is the breaking (which is just done by either shorting or using a resistor across the motor) is most likely only programed to do this for long enough to slow down a disk at the regular speed

It is a blank medium, of course the console is going to act in such a manner. It is trying to read for a data header that is there but is a bunch of 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 entries, so obviously, it is not going to read correctly and continue spinning. But, for the record, as 'scary' as this may sound, no, the Dreamcast isn't going to be damaged by this. The motor is capable of running like this without any sort of harm. Oh, and another thing, it will NOT continue to spin like that forever; after about a minute or so the console will stop trying to read the disc. You'll get your typical error screen afterwards. By the way, if you put in a CD-R that has music on it, the Dreamcast will behave in a similar manner, but as soon as it reads the header, it will stop. It will not run like that when playing audio from the disc unless the disc is in any way unreadable.
@raehik
@raehik 7 жыл бұрын
This is a lot less dangerous or strange than made out to be. The Dreamcast is simply reading a CD at the speed the GDROM drive expects. Likely it won't normally read at max rate due to the sound, but like Picky Old Gamer said, it can't find a start point for the data on the CD (since it's empty). CD/DVD drives usually make this sound when reading or writing at high speeds, due to the CD and drive vibrating at high read rates. Anyone here have a PS1 or PS2 slim? They also still have the disc spinning when you open the drive, but are a lot quieter (forgot if the PS1 was loud).

Probably does that because it's trying to find where the data starts, since it doesn't find it, it just starts spinning faster in order to find it faster. Just my uneducated guess though.
@DarkWiNKenzo
@DarkWiNKenzo 4 жыл бұрын
fakeDeltatime well, thing is, many people think the same, which is true and considered fine, but, if you want to learn something in my expertises, here i come, so, first, lets take it to the basis, when you put a CD inside of a CD-ROM drive (in a PC for example) it would first try to find the table of content of "Lead in" which is in basic term is data that is given to the CD-Drive itself and adjust for exemple : it’s spindle speed, numbers of tracks, etc, and that is what that is not being found when we put a blank CD-R inside a Sega Dreamcast, you can now deduce why it kept speeding up : it had no way of determining at which speed the GDrom formatted disc is supposed to go at, hence why a blank media such as the one said in the example above keep speeding up, no table of content, and after a minute or two of trying to read the disc, the Sega gives up reading the unreadable pits and lands of the lasers reflection off of the disc.

@AnimMouse

Well, for me, preserving a console means making them open to make hobbyist acknowledge them. For example, the Atari Jaguar is bad at marketing, but when Atari released their documents about the Jaguar, even the patent, that console is still living. Pirating Dreamcast games makes it cheaper, therefore more people buy it. Piracy helps more preserving it.
@RollerVisionStudios
@RollerVisionStudios 7 жыл бұрын
I totally respect your opinion. If you want to use pirated games, go ahead. But what I meant about preserving Dreamcasts is that the pirated games actually damage the consoles laser. I highly recommend checking this video out by Adam Koralik because he explains in detail what exactly those burnt games are and why they are so harmful to Dreamcasts. Oh, thanks for sharing the video, this is my first time to hear that Dreamcast is a failure for SEGA but because of piracy, Dreamcast is still living. GD-disc is not produced anymore. And about the burned disc, yes, it can damage the laser overtime, but from the forums, I read about gamers always playing with mil-cd, and their Dreamcast is still working fine.

Yeah, i have 3 Dreamcasts now. My original one, a worn out used one that I got from a friend of mine, for spare parts and a few years ago i bought another second hand one including a few games. However that one too did not work quite well and I had to use parts from all 3 consoles to make one single working one. Sega really didn't care about production quality at all but at least the internals are very tidy and everything can be easily replaced.

Man that kinda sucks that the parts on your Dreamcasts are not the most well built, because I have 2 of them and everything about them is fine. Yeah, the location of the internals is great and very well organized. Well, I am glad that you have one working Dreamcast. :)

Many CD readers have no way of directly sensing the speed of the motor, but instead adjust the speed of the motor so that data bytes are received from the disk at the proper speed. If no data are received, the machine will assume it's because the disk hasn't yet gotten up to speed, and will thus increase the speed of the disk less or until it decides that the disk simply isn't readable or it reaches its physical limits. I would not expect particular damage to the unit if the unit isn't run too fast for too long, but it would probably cause some excess wear.

It's trying to find at what speed the CD was written. When you burn a CD at say 52x it has to spin faster to read the data than a 4x. So it's spinning up to the max RPM of the cd drive

It might have something to with the fact that no cd is made perfectly flat, and not every hole is punched perfectly in the center. So that revving sound could be the vibration caused by an imbalanced distribution of weight and force.

That wont do anything bad to your dreamcast, that is just what CD and DVD drives sound like at high speeds. My PC Blu-ray drive has a 48x speed mode for CDs, for example it uses this speed when first starting a program that is on the CD. When it does 48x mode it sounds like this. So for whatever reason the dreamcast runs the blank CD at a much higher speed than it would for anything else, possibly because it is trying to find the beginning if the data faster. This is also why the blank CD takes much longer than the GD to stop spinning, because it was spinning at a much faster speed to begin with.

This was indeed informative. It sounds to me like DC is trying to destroy the blank CD by spinning it so fast it will not only damage the disc but the system as well.

What is happening, is that as the console attempts to read the data on the disk, it is not finding any data, and erroring out, causing the PWM controller to set the motor to 100% while the laser seeks data, trying to find something to read. Normally, the firmware catches that the first few reads detected 0, and reports back to the OS as blank after spinning down. This step was possibly taken out, to clear a little more space to add the instructions that the games use, as Sega never expected, nor intended, for people to insert blanks. On the bright side, if your bearing ever degrades enough to start sounding rough or even sieze, you can clean, oil, and break the bearing, and put in a blank to make it spin, and spread the oil evenly.

It's because it's trying really hard to find data, so when you put in a normal CD/disc there's data already there and it slows down to "read" it. When there's no data(like in a blank disc) it speeds up(like we would when we speed read or skim over pages) to try and find the content. When you open the console, it's still spinning because you opened it as it was still trying to find that data.

MIL-CDs are NOT all pirated discs (although the MIL-CD format did allow for things like Bleemcast to come into being). MIL-CDs are "Music Interactive Live CDs"...basically multimedia (video + audio) discs, that have music along with some visual display or interface. kind of like a music CD, but with either on-screen lyrics, music videos, or a light-show or something. perhaps band info or other extra stuff. they were only ever released in Japan, from what i've heard. there is a lovely Wikipedia article on them.

Same happens with some CD players; they just don't know what to do (because it's blank) so it tries everything it can think of -- spinning it faster, moving lasers front and back -- and still get no results it thinks it should get.

this is my opinion ,so the thing that maybe the reason the blank disc sounded spooky was that all the data was loaded from the disc as fast as possible because it never carried 1giga byte of data and it carried below far from 1 gig. this maybe possible and noticable from other consoles like a playstation.

Some viewers have said it very accurately... it speeds up at the start because it is programmed to spin the disc (upon the laser detection of it) otherwise no motor spin at all (or if it does it's a pulse) the high spin speed is because a reflection was detected by the circuits that read data ... with a no info disc inside the circuits are attempting to detect something that isn't there so it spins the wickedly fast ...some audio CD players will have a similar reaction been there done that

Yes I am, although this only works well with the Dreamcast because it has VGA output. You can simply plug it in and everything will be fine. With other consoles, you have to use a converter, which makes things a little bit more complicated.

What’s happening is that since the disc is blank there is a trace amount of data on the disc but that data is way, way to small for the Dreamcast or any system to detect hence why the motor “red-lines” brings the disk up to full speed so if you put something on the disc as in BIOS/UFEI, ISO, or MP4. That data or information can be detected and read by the laser or reader. Basically a “blank” CD isn’t actually blank it’s got that tiny bit of data also known as system macro data (I think) responsable for read/write detect by the system. And that inner ring in game discs is actually the copyright protection data which doesn’t always work or function, so basically you can think of a game disc as well ROM Partition Memory, So you’ve got the Game Data in one sector/partition the Copyright Protection in the second sector/partition and the Startup in the final sector/partition.
