The Dreamcast is a prime example of a great thing released at the wrong time. Its a shame Sega finally got it right..but just too late with the Ps2 and XBOX right around the corner. Had the Dreamcast came out in place of the Saturn..that would have really changed the landscape.
@Compucles6 жыл бұрын
Or better yet given the Saturn decent 3D graphics capabilities. Heck, even the 32X was better suited for displaying 3D graphics! Anyway, another year of development resulting in some better specs and DVD playback would've gone a long ways towards saving the Dreamcast.

@jeltezandberg68936 жыл бұрын
compucles: The saturn had a diffrent reason from failing in the west, because in japan it was sega's best selling console. The main reason why the saturn failed in the west was though to giving the console a surprise launch. A lot of US shops began to refuse selling any SEGA saturn's all together. Same applied in Europe were SEGA was more dominant than Nintendo. Oh and on top of that Bernie stolar refused to localize almost every 2d game. Because he thought ugly 3d polygons are the future and 2d is dead. Even thought the saturn was specifically build for getting 2d arcade perfect ports. Even through this day 2d saturn games look amazing. Sonic was also a factor but not the main factor of the saturns poor sales in the west.
@Compucles6 жыл бұрын
+21st As limited as the 32X was, that's still better than what the Saturn could do (or rather couldn't do)! The Saturn was designed to be a 2D console and didn't have such dedicated 3D hardware either. Its 3D games either looked worse than many 32X games (and the 32X's graphical capabilities weren't used to its full potential during its short lifespan) or had massive performance issues. As Jelte Zandberg pointed out, Sega of America then further shot themselves in the foot by refusing to localize many of the great 2D games the Saturn had. Stolar was right about 3D graphics being the future, and the Saturn was essentially doomed on arrival due to this fact, but he still made a massive mistake by ignoring the biggest selling point the Saturn did have.
@Compucles6 жыл бұрын
Physics and AI are completely different from the graphics themselves. You're correct that the 32X would be even worse than the Saturn at running those games, and there's no denying that the Saturn was overall a much more powerful console, but its ability to display 3D graphics still completely sucked. For games where the 32X can handle all the other technical details, that once advantage it has for 3D graphics is a huge one. I doubt the Saturn would be able to run stuff like "Virtua Racing Deluxe" or "Star Wars Arcade" without compromising on the quality of the graphics.

If you pay close enough attention, you’ll notice that almost every problem Sega had was caused by Sega of Japan. They chose a weaker chipset for the Dreamcast, & decided not to put a dvd drive on it, for that weird karaoke format that caused piracy& failed. I even heard a story about how an American 1st party Sega dev asked to use the nights engine to make a new sonic game for the Saturn, but yuji naka threatened to leave Sega if they allowed his engine to be used. Sega of America had the Sega cd & 32x forced down there throats.
@MEDZFactor4 жыл бұрын
Thing is, it wasn’t even the actual NiGHTS engine but something very much like it. Yuji Naka hated that, and whined to Hayao Nakayama who ultimately shut down the project simply to keep Naka from leaving the company. (Which he threatened to do so).

@evanswart4803 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s as simple as that. The 32X was Sega of America’s idea, having shot down using its specs for a separate Sega Neptune console that would have launched around the same time as the Saturn- the add on was the worse idea. The Saturn was actually the company’s best-selling console in Japan despite underperforming in America, so Sega of Japan were making decisions for the Japanese market. 3Dfx made a big mistake in going public, and confident it would sell better in Japan, Sega of Japan chose the Hitachi chip set. The Japanese and American gaming markets were very different then and now.

The saddest part of the dreamcast is you could tell Sega was REALLY trying with it, do a lot of things that were ahead of its time. Sadly their ambition, and questionable decisions of executives that acted on emotion rather than reason, both contributed to the dreamcasts failure. It went too far with the technology that they didn't know how to properly use it, thus exploited by pirates, the pettiness of executives caused them to make new rivals that would eventually move past them, and the final nail in the coffin was that it was just time for them to pass. Sony and Microsoft came into the console market, prepared and ready to change it and Sega just couldn't keep up, especially since their Japanese and American branches often, even to this day, are out of sync. Hopefully Sega learns why the dreamcast failed one day, and moving forward, makes smarter decision. I don't need them back in the console market, but hopefully that old Sega ingenuity is still somewhere deep in the company and will come out to change the industry again.

CanterlotCrusader I hate to crush your statement but, the Dreamcast didn't fail. A console fails when it doesn't sell that well at lunch. If anything it was a success. @CanterlotCrusader6 жыл бұрын
Code Red Ghosts Records Actually, more often than not, companies don’t aim for their profits to be on actually selling the console, but the software that will come with time. From a business standpoint, consoles aren’t meant to be consumable goods that you buy and use up, they are meant to be steady sources of revenue with time. The Ps2 is highest selling console, but its success is more that it had a huge library of games that allowed it be a viable console for years, even quite a while after the ps3 came out. The Dreamcast is no Virtual Boy, but it would be hard to deem it a success by video game standards.

Piracy was nowhere near as much of an issue as everyone claims it is. Sure, it existed, and it's very easy to run your own burned games on the Dreamcast, but most people wouldn't have the knowledge or the tools needed for this in the year 2000. Hell, most people had dial-up at the time - can you imagine downloading a Dreamcast game over dial-up? Plus, CD burners were costly, and blank CDs weren't nearly as cheap as they'd become over the next several years. On top of that, hard drives on PCs were small (the PC I had in 2000 had a 4GB hard drive). I compare Dreamcast piracy to PSP piracy - it became easier and easier throughout the PSP's life to play downloaded games. Toward the end, you literally just downloaded a file to the PSP, ran it, and your PSP could magically play downloaded games. Combine this simplicity with much faster internet speeds in households, and the fact that you don't have to have any extra equipment (CD burner or blank discs), and you'd think EVERYONE would just pirate the games... yet I didn't know a single person at school who knew this was even a thing, and developers and publishers continued making games for the PSP. There were a lot of factors that contributed to the Dreamcast's short life, but I don't feel piracy is one of them. Maybe if the system lasted a few years longer, you'd have a better argument, but not in the year 2000.

Travis Combs Thing being Dreamcast wasnt such a big seller. The little amount of piracy still Hurt it
@traviscombs69476 жыл бұрын
Dreamcast sold great for awhile. It actually broke sales records in the US at launch. The PS2 being on the horizon was a far bigger obstacle to overcome than piracy ever would have been. Combined with lack of publisher support (such as EA as mentioned in this video), and the numerous screw-ups from Sega in the '90s, these are what made the Dreamcast sales decline.

Travis Combs never meant that piracy was that big of a Deal. Just meant that it still was a Problem. My Bad If it came Out wrong

This is what I've been saying for years when people bring up piracy as one of the things that killed the Dreamcast; the knowledge and capacity to pirate Dreamcast games didn't become commonplace until the console was already dead, or at least close to it. The main thing that killed the Dreamcast was the upcoming PS2. After the hat-trick of critical and commercial bombs that were the Sega CD, 32X, and Saturn, Sega had lost a lot of the public's good favor. Compounded by the PlayStation being by far the most successful console of the previous generation, Sony was able to defeat Sega with hype alone.
@Compucles6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if Sega had waited another year in order to give the Dreamcast some better specs and DVD playback, it might've stood a chance, but they were too impatient with the disaster that the Saturn (and before that the Sega CD and 32X) had become.

Sega should make a Dreamcast Classic Edition like what Nintendo did with the NES and SNES.
@koerel6 жыл бұрын
Say what you want about the specific hardware that Sega went with, it still blew people away back in the day. I feel the biggest problem of the Dreamcast wasn't the hardware itself, but rather the marketing and the relations with game development studios in general.

I loved Sega's series of consoles and games, but I think what killed them was that they moved to release new consoles way too quickly and just killed their customer base and new interest...All in all, they had a good run in the industry, I still play quite a few of the old games through other legitimate means since my consoles grew legs as it were.

My favorite thing about Sega back in the day is that even if their console at the time was obviously doomed to fail, they continued to make quality games for it for the duration of its life. They weren't foolishly trying to somehow win back the market, they were making games that their fans could actually enjoy. So when all of their friends owned a more popular GameCube or PS2, Dreamcast players could still feel like their purchase was well worth it. And hey, their devotion to making quality, fun games left a legacy that still holds up to this day in the hearts of fans. I'd say that's a success in itself.

Oh, I never intended it to sound like EVERY game they've made since the Dreamcast has been bad. There have been plenty of diamonds in the rough (Sonic Generations and whatnot). I just meant that they overall CONSISTENT quality has disappeared. It's impossible to know when they'll decide to make something good or bad nowadays. Their quality is all over the place. Back then, you could sleep well knowing they'd be making mostly good games at a frequent pace. Sorry for the confusion.

I recall how the media such as EGM, would dedicate articles of pages to answer the "Should you buy a Dreamcast or wait?" question, where waiting meant PS2 and "Dolphin" (which would become the Gamecube). At the end, they told, indirectly, along the lines, to wait. I wonder if Sony put some dough for these. At the time, with all the games and the price tag, one can wonder if waiting was a wise decision overall...
