Vietnam has a place that feels strangely familiar and yet foreign to me -Cho Lon China town in Saigon.
Vietnam was ruled by various Chinese dynasties for about 1000 years, and the French later named their newly colonised territory…Indochina.
As the name suggested, Vietnam as part of Indochina has a culture deeply influenced by both Hinduism and Chinese culture.
In this episode, we took a walk at Cho Lon China town. It has all the Chinese culture thingy that you would expect in a Chinatown. Chinese food, Chinese traders, and temples. But to our surprise, almost all the people converse in Vietnamese. So we can’t help to ask the question, do the Chinese descendent still speaks Chinese?
Hoang
Calvin
